Cover cropping on beds provides many benefits & novel management options for vegetable farmers. Eric Brennan highlights efforts to develop & evaluate NOVEL EQUIPMENT for bedded cover crops at the USDA-ARS in Salinas California. This reduces seeding rates, & improves weed control, mowing, & residue management. It also allows selective mowing in cover crop mixtures of rye and vetch. This approach may increase cover crop adoption in vegetable systems.
-Cover crops can provide many benefits (nitrate scavenging, weed suppression & on-farm carbon production) that improve the sustainability of high-value, high-input vegetables systems.
-This was 1st presented in a Symposium (Engineering Solutions and New Machines for Organic Agriculture) at the 2017 American Society of Agronomy annual meeting in Tampa, Florida.
