It's generally creepy to see Brian and Landy alongside each other in most interviews, but the clip at 8:25 is very telling in hindsight. Landy's talking about how normal and well-adjusted Brian has become, but Brian is silent, hunched over, trying to make himself small next to Landy who, at that time, was controlling him through fear, cruelty, and medication.

I've always thought this too! From 1962 onwards he looks nothing like the photographs from Hawthorne High or his earlier childhood. Then again in 75-82 he didn't even resemble the 62-75 incarnation. Three relatively different looking facial structures. It wasn't until 87-92 did his facial structure resemble his youth again, his jawline became so defined again. He looked weirdly different again after 1992, for example if you watch him in the special with Mike Love or even the Don Was documentary. Around 1998- he became more defined again around the cheeks and jawline and to this day looks as you would have expected him to based on his Hawthorne High pictures.

Brian was very coherent in this interview, and even said some little nuggets of brilliance. It's sad now knowing what was going on in the background during this era (Landy). But nonetheless, Brian Wilson is a fantastic album, even if Landy took way more credit for it than he deserved. Landy DID become more involved with Sweet Insanity, which is why it is a far inferior album and was never officially released. I have it and while it has some highlights, it's still a depressing listen for the most part.

@@coldacre yes, he saved Brian‘s life in 1983, but then went way too far. He was a total control freak and later admitted that he controlled Brian by applying heavy meds, especially during business meetings. Applied cruelty and intimidation as well. Brian had just been Landy‘s puppet until 1992. I‘m not a fan of Mike Love but he wrote in his book that Brian‘s medication was so strong that his brain had suffered from heavy side effects for a few years even after Landy was forced to leave Brian alone. Plus, Landy became his musical and business partner, which a doctor/therapist isn‘t allowed to do and which led to Landy losing his license in California. There is revealing interview on yt in which a female reporter confronted Landy with the accusations of unethical behaviour and Landy was evasive and in the end helpless and couldn’t find justifications for his actions.

Brian was helped to an extent by Dr. Landy who was a psychologist and not a psychiatrist. Unfortunately, it appears from a distance that Dr. Landy became consumed by Brian’s celebrity and lifestyle and stayed far too long in the situation.. There is an old saying that someone can stay at the fair too long meaning you stay in a situation beyond it’s expiration date. It did not have to end badly with Brian Wilson for Dr. Landy but he has no one to blame but himself for how his relationship with Brian ended. I think Dr. Landy did do some good with Brian but he did not know when to wrap it up.

In 1981 I spoke to Brian Wilson for 20 minutes in his hotel room before a show: he was massively overweight and coked up but he was also completely lucid and clear-headed. He had complete recall of music he had recorded. Then I started to see interviews with Brian after he had spent a few years under Gene Landy's" care" and it was so sad and disappointing to me. Brian looked great which seemed to take the focus off the things he was trying to say and how he was saying them. He seemed more confused and damaged then when I spoke to him in 1981. I don't think he ever recovered from Landy's "care".
