Hi ! I’m from Russia and we have the same situation with regulation about certification for cow’s tails. Only sewed lanyards are acceptable. But the rules comes in 2018 and I’m worked from 2010, and use to dynamic rope with knots for same reasons as you. So if I worked on a plant I’m using sewed, if on a construction site with more freedom I prefer dynamic rope. ATM for hand ascender, I’m testing 75sm local brand sewed lanyard attached to a gray D ring on petzl Astro, the same point as a croll. And I like it 😁

I have two fixed length lanyard from Singing Rock attached with screw links to my D ring which I mostly use securing tools and things like that. But I also use one or two knotted dynamic rope cows tails on my setup.

Be interesting what force they would produce on a FF1. I’m sure a knotted cow tail would reduce forces sub 6kn on a FF1.

Love the videos, Mikey! Thanks for creating all this content. Tied cowstails get my vote all the way for all the reasons you highlight. If we can’t be trusted to tie knots, how can we possibly be considered a legitimate industry? What’s next? Sewn terminations on our anchor lines? ANSI missed the mark on this one. Hopefully this detail can get walked back in subsequent revisions.

Thank you! One of the most basic skills of our industry is tying knots! Lets not take that away. Soon they will mandate sewn working/backup lines. And thats the day I retire from the industry haha

Thanks for the video ! I personally use two knoted lanyards and 1 simple adjustable as 3rd lanyard. It works very well. Cheers

At my Fire Brigade in Austria we use the Petzl Progress Adjust Y. Mostly because the require less training for tying the knots as we are all volunteers and rope access is not our main job. And also because the sewn and adjustable ready made cowstails are certified.

Hey! Thank you for your comment. In your case it totally makes sense. For ease and speed. Great option. I love the progress adjust. Even prefer it over a grilon

I wouldn't like having them connected with carabiniers to my D-ring... I think petzl are hoping it will boost sales on the astro with its removable D-ring which I'm sure fixed terminations would sit better in.

Yes, they are compatible. Of course but in most cases you attach sewn lanyards with screw links not carabineers. And to conform with Z459 it cant be a carabineer. (From my understanding).

Lawyers are always ready to embrace procedures that remove responsibility from the user and offload them onto the manufacturer. And Companies are always ready to solve problems that don't exist with products that cost a lot more than the traditional method/product.

Not just lawyers. But large companies also. They are always looking for ways to remove “the human factor”

Thanks for the great content! I am window cleaner working in Australia, do you know if I could use the petzel adjust as a cows tail? They are great for work positioning but the adjustable bit concerns me in the event of a fall.

I think you can as long as the cam is connected to you and not the other end of the lanyard.

Yeah I was going on the manufacturers guidelines for the petzl progress adjuster I don't know how this ties in with the new US standard as it would have to connect with a crab and not a mallion.

Thanks for all the info you share!! I'm from South Africa and currently saving up to do my IRATA Level 1 course and wanting to get into the oil and gas industry, what is the job availability for a IRATA Level 1 Technician and what other courses can I do to help me get a job?

JANE-I is a non-adjustable dynamic rope lanyard that can be combined with an ABSORBICA energy absorber to make a single lanyard with energy absorber.

Im aware its dynamic. But do you think youll get a useful amount of stretch out of a 60cm rope?

@@theropeaccessandclimbingpo2380 about 8%, so close to nothing. Keeping them thought or using them with the absorber. Other times just the absorber with a connector in each end. Usually I just go for grillions but as always it is about application. Stay safe.
