This was the first "gas" powered anything I ever owned. I never got the engine running in the correct direction - always ran backwards. I had no idea what I was doing. So I'd just send it up the street backward. Didn't use the string that it was supposed to be attached to. I have no idea how many times I ran it, how long I had it or what happened to it. I wish as a kid I knew what I'd wish I'd still want now. I would have taken better care of things.

Yep that was how mine went 1972 maybe. Mine was red white blue. Lots of learning about rich and lean. I got it to run a couple times on the string. Got the red Corsair ukie same year. The start of a 50 yr love affair with all things RC.

Got mine to run one time. Used two bricks at the end of the sidewalk that angled out so the string could “Y” out. Parachute didn’t work right, and it just brought the bricks together and disintegrated. It was a one-and-done…. never ran again. Those .049 engines were a struggle. But fun. Never got the planes to work. Then went on to Estes rockets. Those, were awesome.

When I was a kid my Dad bought me the Funny Car. We couldn't get that one to start either! Cox .049's always ran great in planes, not so well in cars or boats. Never saw the Dragster before. Maybe it was only available in Japan? Anyway, "Bideo arigatou Kan-san!"

I had the Pinto funny car, and I never had a problem starting it. Fuel it, close the needle valve then open it 3 1/2 turns, turn the tires a few times to draw fuel into the engine, prime it, put the battery clip on and turn the tires it almost always fired right up. My friend had the blue dragster and it worked ok too.

We had this dragster way back in the mid seventies. I know a lot of viewers were disappointed but that thing was extremely hard to start. There was a small metal loop at the front and back underneath the dragster that you ran a long length of string which was tied to a metal pin at each end that you actually drove into the asphalt.
@MrCarrizojim

I had one of these in the 70s. You are missing a couple essential things that make this car useless without them. It is supposed to run on a 50-60 yd string stretched between two big nails pounded in the pavement with a small knot about 2/3 down. The string should pass through a slotted lever on the underside. That would pop the chute and actuate a choke collar on the exhaust to shut off the motor. Most importantly, you are missing the launcher. You start the car, put it on the launcher, adjust the needle, get it screaming and hit the button that drops the back wheels... mine would run 20-30 mph Can’t believe they are near $1k on eBay. Keep your eyes peeled at yard sales.

I remember seeing the dragster in the Cox catalog. It ran along a string from what I recall. I never had enough money as a kid to buy it. I remember my cousins had a Cox buggie that had a pull starter, a miniature version of a lawn mower pull starter.

We had those dragters as kids. They ran along a string. We used to line them up side by side and race them down the street. They were a total pain in the ass to get started. Loved the old toys. So much more dangerous and fun!

Kids these days have no clue how gas motors work or anything mechanical cuse toys these days takes batteries and no need to assemble cuse they play video games all day. I'm 30 and when I was a kid I had to build my toys or when I was like 10 and 11 I was flying nitro powered and gas powered rc planes and tunning my own motors only video games we had our was Nintendo 64 and playstation 1 that's it no online gaming yet at that point and no cell phones became mainstream till I was 13. But I also built a model cars had this exact same Cox dragster that I fixed up looking brand new and ran like brand new when I was 11 found it at a old flea market and re built it my self
