Some people are just so afraid to even look at a gun so what they can cry all they want, I would carry that riffle with me all the time. When I went to high school just about everyone had a rifle in their pickup and a rifle rack in the back window, I lived in central California no body ever complained about that. Now I live about seven miles from there, now we call the state Kommiefornia. Yes that rifle is a great tool. Keep up the great channel I love watching other people work....lol.

My brother was stationed in Japan for two years. The people watching the farm did not keep the coyote numbers under control. When they got back they wished it was only six coyotes. We stopped counting at twenty. They were going after the poultry and started to get under the coop fence. Yes they needed to be eliminated.

You guys still have prairie dogs out there? Back in the 70 early 80's there were prairie dogs in Wyoming!
@xyzsame4081
3 жыл бұрын
Prairie dogs opened the soil and thus helped to harvest the rain. Espcecially torrential rain and fast melting snow- thus recharging the aquifers in good years, the water was not lost in runoff from land with - even only a little - slope into streams. if torrential rain lands in streams it is lost, also to the land and wildlife downstreams it ends up in the ocean within days. ALL water provided free of charge by precipitation either went into the topsoil, the aquifers or if it hit some impermeable layer underground it feeds springs or creeks that flow year round ALSO during times of draughts. They do not have prairie dogs in Australia to help them with the job, but there humans achieved the same with leaky weirs (those floodplains used to have creeks that meandered through the land, plus they were not overgrazed and had enouhg plant cover year round. Some farmers now try to recreate those natural conditions - while others seem to be stuck in their old ways, as they can watch one farm being green, when all other farms are brown and unproductive. (I guess they don't want to be outdone, and not admitting mistakes is more important than even the income - as long as it does not get catastrophically bad. Peter Andrews got a lot of attention (by citizens, maybe not so much by traditonal farmers) when ABC had a special. In the old days with naturally meandering streams (and only soft footed cangaroos and herbivores) any surplus of water during rainy saiaon had plenty of time to seep into the soil and to end up in the water table underground. See Natural Sequenzing farming, Peter Andrews. The farms with those water retention installations still had green gras and the land supported year round water flow in creeks during the historic draughts of the recent years. The creeks and springs often ORIGINATE in the land where the rain is harvested in a much better manner. They are fuelled with the water that was recharged underground. And that is a process over many years, so they can even out the years with high (if infrequent and often torrential rainfalls) and the 2 or 3 years with underwhelming or very poor rainfall. The many trees planted now on these cattle ranches, help to bring up the water, no matter the rain situation. That land is comparable in that it is used for extensive cattle ranching, although they have longer growing seasons (no harsh winter) and also Extreme draughts are often broken by torrential rainfalls (that can cause major erosion, even landslides). Well not on land that is ready to soak up, any rain, light or extremely intense is a blessing, - whether it is management by beaver, earth worms, good soil & trees, prairie dogs and / or human made water infiltration earthworks. No prairie dogs in land where they were part of the eco system. Humans got rid of wolves and they try to contain the number of other predators (which is possible with firearms, dogs, catching them ....) But how do humans compensate for the missing contribution of the prairie dogs (which was MASSIVE). And also no trees. An then the farmers wonder how the land does not store enough water. - And NO trees anywhere in sight. There ARE hard, draught resistant trees and cactiy that can withstand heat, cold, and draughts (not native to the state but from other continents). Such trees (or bushes) can create the shelter from wind, summer heat, and winter cold, and allow to grow more productive trees with higher needs, once the pioneers are established.
@xyzsame4081
3 жыл бұрын
A farmer in Canada (Takota Coen) talked about how he underestimated how much the WIND limits the growth of trees on his farm. The tried peaches - but it was too early for them, they need an established protective belt of hardier trees first, then he can have his plumes and peaches. The fruit trees he had planted at the borders of plots of grazing land survived but not much growth was going on. On the other hand his father had planted trees already on a part of the property (and intuitively - the son had a permaculture training so he was going for trees big time, to establish diverse, resilient, multifunctional and highly productive eco systems). He also installed swales all over the property to make sure he would harvest ALL the rain and melting snow on the property. The interesting thing is that the zones of better water retention nearby the infiltration trenches (swales) also thaw earlier in spring, you can see the plume of water distribution underground with the matching green gras while other areas are still catching up. The areas with the already established wind protection are more productive, it is noticeable that there is less wind (more pleasant to be there), trees, but also grass, bushes, hedgerows, berries grow better. It is warmer, grass grows faster, they soil is better provided with moisture (thanks to trees and constant good plant cover) even during dry spells. Trees are excellent for soil life. They MINE minerals from deep down, some of them are nitrogen fixers (this farmer in Wyoming mentioned in another video spending 16,000USD on fertilizer - but artificial fertilizers is easily washed out IF they are blessed with a lot of rain, and it is useless when there is not enough rain. The easily soluble fertilizer is bad for soil life. If farmer Mike would nurture soil life and especially fungi (trees take care of that) the hyphens of the fungi would distribute the water that the trees pump up from the undground. All plants get some, not only the trees that do the work of pumping. And nearby the niches with trees there is more dew, so a part of the water they evaporate, falls out during night and helps grass and trees to grow. I seem to remember a ratio of up to 20 % land used for trees from a video of an university that accompagnied the implementation of alley cropping by some farmers (I think in the late 1990s or early 200s). You can plant on 20 % of _fields_ trees - and still break even with the yields of the crops in the stripes between the rows of trees /shrubbs. Better water management and cozier micro climates (softening the impact of wind, cold and hot weather) result in higher yiels on the remaining 80 % of the land. But of course over time they get the extra yield of the trees as well. One major benefit in many regions is protection from wind, shade for animals, but also partila shade for plants (so they grow better than in full sun). Better water management (infiltration and retention). And there are MANY micro niches. Along the edges of such niches the magic happens, diversity is much higher (beneficial plants and insects, birds). Bio mass production (harvesting water, solar energy, carbon and sometimes nitrogen from the air) is the highest at the edges and in the zones of overlap. The plants, trees, bushes and cash crops do not _compete_ for nutrients and water (and also not for sunlight if the systems are well planned and designed) - they prop up each other. So there is MORE bio mass that grows. And at a certain age (a few years or a few decades in the case of timber) the trees also provide a yield (additionally to the protection - also from erosion). High quality timber, firewood. Compost on site: there are nitrogen fixers that can be used for chop and drop (the branches are drastically chopped every year and all or a part is left on the ground to decompose. So that brown / green biomass is the base for new soil and of course habitat for a lot of animals (often beneficials that go after pests, therefore reducing the need for pesticides). One principle is that the soil is never left bare and often they also practice no-till / no plough farming. If the soil is always covered by the plants chosen by the farmer, the weeds have it harder to come up. There are many trees that regrow fine after being massively cut back, and can tolerate a yearly harvest. Some leaves, or fruits can be (also) animal fodder. Or be harvested for human consumption, but also be used for cider production and what is not useable (fruits or nuts damaged when falling to the ground ) is eaten by cows, pigs and chickens.
