Tip from someone who lived in bear country: bear bells don't actually work - if anything they attract bears because they're interested in the sound. We used to jokingly call the bells "dinner bells." Bear spray, hiking with a partner and staying loud on the trail are the best way to deter bears.

Bear security is very important. Carrying bear bells, and in the U.S. pepper spray, is essential. Also while out on the trail it's important to be able to identify bear droppings. They'll often smell of pepper and will contain bells.

I'm not a fan of big cities, but the affection Chris shows for North Japan in his videos are palpable and have rubbed off on me, and make me want to come to Japan, avoid Tokyo and just head North... then there are videos like this that just help make Japan feel like the idyllic place to live. Hustle and bustle in cities is available, but so are views like this, not to mention you can also head south and enjoy a more Caribbean type experience, if that's your thing. Everything always looks so utterly clean, and.... as I already said, idyllic! Thanks for sharing, I feel homesick for a place I've never visited!

10:35 Maybe they just like to night hike. XD I'm from Germany and I looooved night hikes when I was a child and it was always a special adventure for me. Well, I have to say that I lived in a village, and I'm not sure if this is a very common thing elsewhere. We did night hikes during class trips and even when we were still going to the kindergarten (then we walked with lanterns). When I was a bit older, I went camping, and they also organized night hikes where people tried to scare us. So I'd totally be up for walking there at night as well, haha. 😆
