I use a small mixer when I play drums with my band. I get a monitor signal from FOH, an ambient mic and a metronome into my mixer, and I connect my InEars to the phones output. We sometimes use backing tracks, and I have a separate multitrack player for this. Normally it is just 3 tracks - a stereo track and a click track. The click is just for me, while the stereo is split in the DI box to FOH and the through-outputs are sent back to my little mixer. I have two questions and they are: Can I use the CQ-18T to replace all of this, and have my backingtracks on an SD card and play back 3 tracks from the SD Card? I would then route the stereo backingtrack to Aux Out 1-2 for FOH in addition to listening to it in my InEars. Can I assign the three rotary knobs on the left of the screen to adjust fader volume of any channels in the CQ-18T - for instance Backing Track, Click Track and Monitor Input from FOH? That way I can have easy access to adjust my monitor mix while I am playing, without having to use the touchscreen.

Got mine this week and have had no issues so far. I’ve not tried the Bluetooth but everything has been great so far. I’ve only one issue. USB B into logic signals are extremely low. Guitar on the cq18 is gain staged with gain assistant showing level at 0 db but when sending to logic signal is -15db not sure what to do about this. Please and thanks.
@AllenandHeathUK
10 ай бұрын
Hi Ganesh, As with all our digital mixers, 0dB on the CQ meter will give you +4dBu on an output socket and -18dBFS to any digital output. What you're seeing is the difference between dB metering in the CQ and dBFS metering in Logic. There is 18dB of headroom which helps avoid peaks and digital distortion when recording. Increasing the level in post (by normalising for example) is the same as increasing the level before sending to the USB interface in the CQ would be, but without the risk of peaking. There's an article about this here - support.allen-heath.com/hc/en-gb/articles/4403616287889-General-Qu-SQ-Levels-and-Metering-in-Qu-and-SQ - which is written for SQ/Qu but most of it also applies to CQ. Late question here. iPad audio over usb to the desk, I play with backing tracks that are split Click RIGHT and Backing Track LEFT. Can these be used without the click going to FOH?
@AllenandHeathUK

Hi Joe, Yes, this should be straight forward. If you are splitting a stereo feed to two mono parts, then you simply route this into two separate mono inputs. You can then route one to LR and the other to which ever bus you want. I hope this helps! Luke

Is there a simple device to connect to the USB-B port (acting as host) and convert the stereo feed to AES? That + the BMD Audio to SDI would allow me to get this into my video switcher fully digitally, which would be awesome for avoiding potential clipping during the D/A then A/D conversion.

Hi Jeff, In short, the extra hardware and core power required to enable expansion and/or linking of the CQ would increase the price of it for everyone, including those who don't need or want that functionality. Regarding the new software tech, we have had many requests for the gain assistant and feedback assistant, along with the quick channels and FX to be included in other ranges, so we'll certainly investigate, but I couldn't say whether it would be possible or not at this time. Thanks! Keith.

Just got an 18T a few days ago. It looks really promising. I'm still learning how to run it and I've got three gigs this weekend! I do live recording and sound reinforcement for vocal groups here in New Haven Connecticut USA. A few things I found surprising: When you link two input channels, the odd channel goes hard left, and the even channel goes hard right. I always link two channels for a Mid-Side microphone and run them in mono through the sound system. When I get to post, I fold the recording out into stereo. I can no longer do it this way and I'm going to have to run two mono channels and copy / paste the EQ and be very careful with the faders. Is there any chance that the pan function can be unlinked? There's no time stamp on the recording? My shows are sometimes up to 2 hours in length and I usually stop the recording a number of times for intermission and when a new group takes the stage. So now I'm going to have to line tracks up by eye when I get to post I guess. Otherwise, this mixer looks great!!! BTW: My friend who is a commercial studio owner used to work for A & H when you had a location here in Orange Connecticut. It will be nice running with A & H instead of "brand X" like I was before. I'm crossing back over from the dark side!! This video is excellent. Thank you!

@@AllenandHeathUK Thank you for your prompt reply. I'm thinking that you misunderstood my question about the PAN function. I'm not looking for an option to unlink/link the pan; instead, I would like to see the pan function always unlinked from a linked pair of inputs. It shouldn't be there at all. In a live situation, not being able to adjust the stereo spread is not good at all. As I've explained in my original post, using mid/side technique with this limitation is a deal breaker. You'd have the cardioid microphone's information on one side of the room, and the figure of eight microphone's information on the other side of the room. UNUSABLE. In my situation, I place a mid/side microphone in the middle of a semicircle of singers, and set the pans straight up dead center. With the mixer that I'm using presently using, (brand X), I can do this with the inputs linked. Any EQ or compression adjustments I make show up in both Left and Right, and the whole semicircle of singers is projected to the audience in mono. With the CQ mixer, I'm going to have to fiddle with two faders, two EQ and compresson settings individually. That's a whole lot of parameters and some super quick copy/paste moves to make while I really should be paying attention to the lead vocalist. So, I would like to see the pan function excluded from linked inputs.

@@evensteve284 It seems you think your previous mixer is taking your side signal (a mono signal) and somehow creating a stereo width, but in fact it is not doing that. Its still just the mono signal coming from both sides. The correct technique would be to send the side (mono) signal to 2 buses, phase reverse one bus and pan to Left, pan the unmodified bus to right. I can assure you, your previous mixer was not doing this for live settings, simply by putting the side signal assigned to one side of stereo linked channels. I would recommend setting this up in a DAW like Logic Pro, using sends/busses, then using software monitoring from Logic to output back into channels on the CQ. Although in a live setting, the usefulness for adding room presence (mid/side) into house speakers is limited. The best application for mid/side recording is through headphones, or a set of stereo speakers. The people in the room generally are already experiencing the room sound. I don't think the CQ series has capabilities for adding aux busses, maybe their higher models do. But taking the software DAW route for this is what I recommend. Otherwise its a fantastic fully featured mixer.

@@mholber ("It seems you think your previous mixer is taking your side signal (a mono signal) and somehow creating a stereo width, but in fact it is not doing that. Its still just the mono signal coming from both sides." ) No, I don't think that at all. I run my house sound in MONO. I record the mid and figure of eight microphones on seperate tracks. When I get to Post, I duplicate the side track, flip the phase, pan those tracks hard left and right, add the mid track and bingo I have stereo. My clients LOVE IT. ("Its still just the mono signal coming from both sides.") When I gang two faders, I want the convenience of having the volume and the EQ controlled together. Any EQ change I make in one channel will show up in the other channel. And the two faders will increase and decrease together. If I could run the pans on both channels dead center, the mid mic and the figure of eight mic would show up in both my left and right FOH speakers in MONO. Which is what I want. Thanks for your reply.

I believe currently it will only show up as an interface but you still have to control it via network... speaking of which, here's something that perhaps could be implemented sooner/easier then the USB-B thing, I know the mixer can join an existing network via its ethernet port, but could we get an update so that it can also join an existing network via it's built in wifi? In other words a client mode for it's built in wifi, not just a router mode. Thanks for your time!

How to increase recording level without increasing main RL fader?
@AllenandHeathUK

Unfortunately, the main LR bus is fixed post-fade to the stereo record. The only way this can be achieved is to use a stereo-paired aux output as a dedicated record bus, with all faders to unity (0dB), plus, the aux bus running in post-fade mode. You then set the aux bus to the LR stereo record under config>USB/SD>Channel assignment. FYI, the aux sends are sourced pre-compressor from the input channel strips. So, this is something you may need to bear in mind. If you require further assistance with this, please reach out to us at support@allen-heath.com Many thanks, Luke

We recommend using fixed filters during system setup, as this will help avoid feedback for the whole event, and if set up correctly no other filters will need to be added. Live filters recover because they're only intended to catch feedback which is a one-off here and there during the event. You can of course use either mode at any time, but to reiterate - best results will always be when FBA is used to add fixed filters at/before soundcheck. Thanks, Keith.

Can the Alt output be used as an independent output to feed Subs for example?
@AllenandHeathUK
10 ай бұрын
Hi Phillip, The TRS ALT OUT on the CQ-20B is assignable as a duplicate of any other (XLR) output, so as with all CQ's, the total number of processing outputs are stereo main LR plus 6 independent monitor outs. It's just that any of these can be sent to the ALT OUT too. Thanks, Keith.

On the cq 20b, I downloaded the app just for fun. It doesn't show channel 19/20. Does channel 17/18 control 19 & 20 as well? Thank you.
@AllenandHeathUK
Жыл бұрын
Hello DJ Lenzo, Channels 17/18 will be ST 1 and channels 19/20 will be ST 2. The Offline or 'Demo' version is the generic version for all 3 models. As the CQ-20B is the only model that has ST 2, this will only be displayed next to the ST 1 if you are connected to a CQ-20B unit. Thank you, Rafael

Will there be an overdubbing feature update like Tascam or zoom / multitracking If that’s the case - I will splash the cash deco
@AllenandHeathUK
8 ай бұрын
@jodagold5481 - The multitrack recording and playback built into the CQ is for capture (rehearsals, live events), performance (multitrack backing track playback) and virtual soundcheck applications. There are no plans to implement any kind of overdubbing in the CQ itself. For studio work, including overdubbing, CQ features a USB-B interface compatible with mac, windows and (because it's class compliant) most tablet devices too. Thanks, Keith.

@@AllenandHeathUK Thanks Keith - but i will say this .. if it was to be implemented by some clever scripting , its fair to say the Tascam model and zoom series of mixer which allow for overdub would be potentially sidelined - for those musicians who also want to get away from a pc .. And looking through the forums this seems a popular question ! Anyway here is to hoping thank you Keith :)

does the cq supports external daw live plugins like waves super rack performar
@AllenandHeathUK
10 ай бұрын
Hi Alfred, If you're talking about inserting external plugins directly into channels, then no. But you can route any output to USB and then route a return back to a free input channel. For this kind of thing though, you'd ideally want an SQ and Waves option card which can be used with a Waves server for low latency external processing. Thanks, Keith.

Can I use the CQ 12t as a computer audio interface?
@AllenandHeathUK

Hi, Yes, the CQ12T can be used as a 16×16 USB-B interface (48/96kHz). It runs compliant on Mac OS and a driver is require for Windows. Best regards, Luke

How many mixes does this mixer has? Can I assign a limiter if I want to receive from the main mixer a signal from the band (excluding me) so I’ll be able to hear the band with my mix and if case the signal is too hot, the limiter will engage. This signal won’t be sent back to the main mixer
@AllenandHeathUK

Hello Daniel, All three CQ models offer 6 Aux's + Main LR. All outputs do indeed include a Limiter on their processing, along with Compressor and the option of GEQ or PEQ+Feedback Suppressor. Thank you, Rafael

@@AllenandHeathUK hello Rafael, thanks for the reply. You mentioned that the outputs has limiter but does it has limiter on the input as well? If I was this mixer for my keys, I will send to the foh only a mix containing my keys. I would like to receive from the foh the rest of the band as a mono signal. I will use another mix to combine both my keys and the rest of the band, but I would like to add a limiter to this input in case the signal is over 0db, I would like to use this mixer as my in ear mixer…, so a limiter on the input is very important. Am I able to record live and later add other tracks?
@AllenandHeathUK
9 ай бұрын
Hi Charlie, It is not possible to playback and record to the to the SD multitrack simultaneously. The only way in which you can achieve this would be to use a DAW. So, for what you propose would be to record live to the SD, then transfer the multi-track to a DAW to add additional tracks. This would be the only way to achieve this. Best regards, Luke

Can the Quick mix channel configuration be changed? I don't put drums in my first 8 channels etc?

Hello Troy, any channel is a blank canvas for you to accommodate your inputs as desired. Go to config/Inputs, select any Input socket and open the Library, then place yourself on the Quick tab and select the Quick preset for the instrument that you wish to have on the selected Input channel. Thank you, Rafael

Hello Vinyl, You can select the Input send point globally for a particular Output, this will be either Pre Fader or Post Fader. You can do this in CONFIG / OUTPUTS, select your Output socket and locate the "Input send level" box. Cheers, Rafael

How to send fx to aux cq18
@AllenandHeathUK
8 ай бұрын
If the FX is set to ‘Shared’ mode. You simply navigate to the fader page and select the third bank to access the FX faders. You then set the output mix you want to send the FX level to and then turn up the corresponding FX fader. I hope this helps! Best, Luke

OK, you make good stuff. but since you cut the software support of my zed r 16, we are doomed to old computers. what will this be?
@AllenandHeathUK
Жыл бұрын
Sadly, the ZEDR16 is discontinued and has been for a few years now. We always try to support products the best way we can at the end of its lifecycle and offer software support for at least a couple of years past this. With ZEDR, however, it was unfortunate that The TC chip-set developer TC applied technologies were purchased by one of our direct competitors. So that, along with the fact the ZEDR was discontinued, put us in a tricky situation. It was for this reason that development for this product ceased. Though again, this only happened when the product had discontinued. Moving on and facing forward. Products such as the CQ are Core-audio compliant on Mac. So should work indefinitely for many years to come with no driver support required from us. This means no waiting for updates in-line with the Apple OS releases. For Windows there are solid ASIO drivers available online. If you would like some advice on workarounds for up-to-date OS integration on ZEDR please drop us a line, we’ll be happy to assist. Can i use this mixer to stream out our mix to social media like instagram live or youtube ?
@AllenandHeathUK
6 ай бұрын
@mosaidkhalid8634 Yes - the CQ has a USB-B audio interface that can be set to run in Stereo or Multichannel modes. For streaming, you can set this to stereo, then choose to send the main LR mix (or any other stereo output) from the CQ. At the computer you then select the CQ as your input device in whatever you're using to stream and you'll be good to go :) Cheers! Keith.
