Thank-you for a great video. You were incredibly methodical and professional as you pieced the raw footage into a very elegant piece of art. Having done some video editing, I am able to detect all that went into making this video. I think you picked an ideal location from which to shoot, and the early morning background, which also enabled the condensation surrounding the wings and vortices added a bit of mystique to the entire project. Again, thank-you for your efforts. I truly appreciated them and look forward to viewing more of your work.

We have done the Virgin and Cathay from Sydney via Hong Kong and BA arriving at about 05.30 , and its the strangest feeling coming from the heat the other side of the world in 24 hrs and landing in LHR , usually cold and wet . Christopher the vapor trail or condensation happen during take-off and landing. As high pressure builds up under the wings to create lift condensation builds up on top of the wings creating the vapor trail(s) or mini-clouds or as most pilots call it... "con-trails" they disappear as soon as the aircraft lands, since no more lift is needed. I hope this helps.

Low pressure over the wings and in wingtip vortices cause the air temperature to drop. When temp drop is deep enough and/or humidity is high, the temperature reaches the dewpoint causing water vapor to condense.

I flew internationally several times a year back in the 80's when flying was still cheap and fun. As much as I loved the 747, I never had a bad flight on any of the big "Twins" built by either Boeing or Airbus. But my all time favorite was the Lockheed L-1011. Any airline! I've had flights on those that were absolutely rock steady the entire flight, and even experienced a totally automated flight from Jeddah to Heathrow once (That I know of) in the mid-80's. Amazing tech for the era.

I'm not an expert and I was not there, but weather conditions seemed to be OK. Since no one can probably be inside the pilot's mind, I'll change my question: under good weather conditions, why do pilotots abort landings a few seconds before touching ground? Traffic control? Mechanical failures?

I was on BA016 on 12th July, which, I reckon, was the first in that day, at around 0440. However, we were delayed getting into the terminal, because the the jetway wouldn't work and they had to get stairs to the plane. An empty T5 is a sight to behold.

Sorry if I've misled you: as a passenger, I was just sharing my experience of arriving on BA016 six days before you filmed. It appears from your idents that BA016 was third in line on the 18th. I can't be absolutely certain that we were the very first 'wheels down' on the 12th, but we were certainly the first on stand at T5 that day. However, with the delay caused by the jetway not working, by the time we got into the terminal, passengers from another flight were just starting to emerge and I think that it might have been the Hong Kong flight. We did have an advantage at Changi, because we pushed back early, as everyone was on board in good time. However, we then had to wait for our take-off slot for a short while, but that meant we were in the air well on time and weren't hanging around.

This is an unofficial viewing area where lots of people visit to watch the planes, the huge aircraft you would be on about are the 747's and the A380's

In the United States you can't film near the airport for an hour without being stopped

Fascinating and excellent compilation ........ great tracking photography! Reminds this old McDonnell Douglas marketer (who retired in the "90s) how the world of commercial aviation has changed over time, and yet LHR is still the major international hub it always was, and continues to be. Took me back to the many occasions I passed though LHR from LAX en-route to East Africa.

Cool video, thanks! it looks Finnair A350 will be seen more often in LHR next winter season, from 3 flights/w now to 4 flights/w.

Just learnt LHR is getting even more AY A350 flights next winter, their booking site shows A350 for AY831/832 every day except Tue and Sat. Clicking the flight number gives you the a/c type. But beware, changes to A333/A343 possible.
