I have a Plumb boy scout hatchet with original handle and sheath, but also has a mirror polish head. I've always been on the fence about changing that. In some ways the mirror polish is a nice contrast to the weathered handle which still has some of the original red / green paint scheme. This video made decision even harder ! Yours turned out great.

Thanks for the continued support! Some axes definitely look good with a polish don't get me wrong. If I was not going to use it I'd have been more tempted to leave the polish. One of the nice things of going from polish to bluing is the surface prep time is minimal!

Years ago i purchased a bottle of rust removing liquid, i forgot the make, but it made all my axes turn black ! Like they just came out of the forge. One day i will find some. It was better than any bluing.!

I've seen some people use various rust converting solutions that you paint on. I remember one video of someone painting it on an anvil and it looks great. I wish I could remember the solution. If you find it definitely let me know! Thanks for watching👍

Sounds like some good scores Darren!!! When I see round lugs I usually suspect the head is a plumb. Not always true but more often than not it is. Especially for 14 bucks. Awesome finds!

I have a small head like that but no handle and the brand is no longer visible. As far as I know they were made by Vaughan who also made the craftsman ones. The axe and spare handles are still carried on the Vaughan website but are both listed as out of stock as of this writing (8/'24). The axe was marketed as a "fisherman's axe" I believe.

I think your guess of them all being made by Vaughan is spot on. Especially with craftsman being knows for outsourcing manufacturing. I have seen others stamped Belknap bluegrass with the rounded cross/clover shaped logo. But it's my understanding Belknap also outsourced production like craftsman. My unstamped one is Vaughan and I bought it new probably 10 ish years ago. Maybe more. I liked it so much I was going to buy another. In searching I found some places stating that Vaughan discontinued the model unfortunately. They really are very neat and capable little hatchets! Do you have any plans for the head you have?

@@Nsvens89 I found a Vaughan handle for it at Hardwick & Sons, a hardware store in Post Falls, ID. It is a pretty good fit but I am in the process of tweeking the fit using a cabinet scraper to pare it down in very small bites. Patience is a virtue. Once the handle is ready to fit, I will move to the head to clean it up and blue it using this guys method before I set the handle. I really have no need for this little axe but sometimes there are things that are just worth doing in and of themselves. Eventually I will make a leather case for it.

I absolutely agree with you. Sometimes projects are fun just for the sake of the project. Not even the end result. I can imagine such a small eye is quite tedious. I have yet to rehandle one that small. Sounds like you're on the right track 👍
