I find the move really questionable. On both Chelsea’s part and Pulisic. He’s never really proved himself in the Bundesliga. The fact that Sancho has benched him is proof of that. Massive overpayment on just potential for Chelsea. You look at Sane, Son or DeBruyne who proved themselves consistently. Does Pulisic compare? I don’t think so. Not to say he’s a bad player. This has marketing all over it. Loftus cheek and Odoi can barely get a game for Chelsea. Is Pulisic better then them? The only winner for me is Dortmund. They are raking in boatloads of cash on players.

I'm sure a bunch of Americans (not all) will get triggered by his comments but you shouldn't. He's a Scot for starters. He's not going to sugar coat anything. He also makes it clear he knows there are no superstars about to emerge from Scottish football either so don't take it personally. I mean some transcendent talent could pop up anywhere on earth but it's not likely. Pulisic is a really top prospect and could become really good in the future but temper your expectations if you expect him to become a world class player. He COULD but it's a long shot and nothing anyone should hedge their bets on. One thing is for sure. He's going to develop further in the Prem and that should be exciting enough for American fans to watch for now.

The worst thing in American soccer culture are the Europhile so called fans that have huge chips on their shoulder because they don't feel respected. And they deal with this in two ways. One, they just assume that the problem is that we don't copy Europe in every respect. They therefore are hugely cynical about every aspect of American soccer. They hate it all. They hate the MLS. They hate the colleges. They hate the high schools. They hate the academy. They hate their fellow Americans for not seeing that soccer is the best sport. They hate the term soccer. They hate the older players and they hate the new players. And their solution to everything is just import a bunch of things from Europe that truth be told, they don't really understand. They are endlessly complaining about everything - except this a young 'star' in Europe. That 'star' in Europe, he's going to redeem American soccer. And that's the other worst thing about the Europhile fans. They view players solely on how they are going to impress the Europeans and somehow remove the stigma that they feel in being an American soccer fan. They are awaiting for a savior - that one player that is going to be so good he'll earn massive respect and fandom in Europe and be a legitimate world superstar. Then presumably they want to rub that player in the face of the world and joyously exalt in being "legitimate". Every time some young player comes along, he's going to be the best ever. All the older players are trash. This is the true American soccer Messiah. And as soon as that player fails them in their personal fantasy, well their former worship and adoration turns to bitter scorn. No player receives more of their boos and disrespect. The same fan that once angrily argued with you about how great he was like a teenage anime fan defending their favorite "best girl", will do nothing but call that player a loser. Those sort of American fans nearly drive me out of the fandom.

@celebrim1
5 жыл бұрын
No, players like Clint Dempsey came up through the high school ranks, went to college, went into the MLS draft and then went on to Europe. But then, starting around 2006, we stopped getting young new talent coming into the system. For the last 12 years, we've had almost no new strong talent make it up to the top level. There was a sudden drop in the quality of the athleticism we were seeing and lots of young 'promising' talent just never panned out and flamed out after a year or three in Europe. So the talent that we did have just started aging out, and no one could find new talent to replace it. That drop in talent corresponds exactly the leadership of US soccer having implemented the European style 'academy' programs that Europhile fans had been demanding for years in order to 'catch up with Europe'. The result of those demands was 'pay to play' and drop in the numbers of top athletes and their families willing to play soccer even as the breadth of US soccer was increasing in this country. When we hired JK, a failed European soccer coach who'd so worn out his welcome in Europe that if we hadn't offered him a job no one would have, we doubled down on that system. JK openly disparaged the American system and the MLS while at the same time demanding a European style academy program. That was absolutely insane, because the core of the European style academy program is the heavily funded wealthy soccer clubs who can spend money on youth players. So at the same time he's trying to build academy style programs here, he's disparaging the very institution that might be able to fund it. But the thing is, this is the entirely wrong way to go about it. Because we have in the US the world's most advanced, most respected, most comprehensive academic athletic tradition, and it was building US soccer from the late 80's into the early 2000's. Instead, of investing in what we already have, we decided - with the full encouragement of idiots such as your self "to burn the whole system" down, and now after we had caught up to the rest of the world, we are now floundering. Seriously, I'm old enough to remember US soccer in the early 2000's, when we had respected players in many clubs in Europe and were considered a top 10 team in the world. In 2002, we had the world's best young player, and we got into the WC quarter finals and nearly took Germany out of the tournament. And now, a decade later after implementing the stuff you say we need to "catch up with the rest of the world", we are barely hanging on in the top 50 and don't scare Trinidad and Tobago. What changed is we insisted we do what you now say we need to do. So shut the fuck up and stop ruining the sport I love.

Ben Smith I support United and even I can admit Pulisic is a talent we'd wish we could sign. If you ever watched 10mins of football you'd know that the boy is a talent that would probably walk into Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs and United. Would challenge Mane for his spot as well. Craig clearly knows fuck all about football. Larsen fits Favre's philosophy better than Pulisic and that's why he isn't starting.

I think this is a brilliant signing. As a Chelsea fan, I agree that the board are an absolute joke with their communication with the coach. The transfer policy at the club needs to change. Instead of the board recruting players and then Sarri trying to fit it into the system, Sarri should be telling the board what players he wants and he believes will fit into the system. However, at 20 years old, the amount of potential the lad has is undeniable. At Dortmund, he has never had a manager that can truly develop young players. I believe that Sarri is the perfect manager to help Pulisic develop. Pulisic has the ability to play on the right, left or even attacking mid. Him, Hudson-Odoi, and Hazard will be deadly. Some people say that Chelsea ruin young players such as De Bruyne and Salah. The fact is that Chelsea had players in the positions that Salah and De Bruyne played. Salah in particular was a completely different player when he was with us. Showed none of the strength that he currently has, just pace. The managers at Chelsea are expected to succeed. They are expected to bring in Champions League football every season. That's why there is no room to develop young players at the club. Do I think this is bad? Yes. And I think that policy is changing under the current board with the appointment of Sarri, who is aiming to create a new Chelsea identity and with the rise of players like Odoi and Loftus-Cheek.

Burley is spot-on. Fact is, there are very, very few superstars in soccer, and the overwhelming majority of them, historically and currently, hail from 1 of 6 countries/regions. The U.S. isn't one of them. That doesn't mean Pulisic can't become a superstar or that the U.S. won't ever produce one, but the odds seem to indicate that the likelihood of that happening is so astoundingly low that Burley's declaration isn't wrong.

Lingard is a much better player than Radford. Only fat cunts who wear full kits to watch football with a pint and never kicked a ball in their life have such lopsided opinions. He scored a goal though. "the game is 90 minutes long" but he was in the right position to kick the ball once "but it was the tackle and the subsequent passing build up play that created the goal" but he kicked it... Radford's finishing is appalling. I've never seen a striker miss so many 1 v 1s, and that's miss the target, if the keeper saves it 90% of the time you're trash, but not even on target? Fact is he's played up front cuz of lack of options. You have, one fat lazy fuck with a big head and ego who already thinks he made it vs a young local boy hungry to make a name for himself who is really quick. It's obvious who's gonna look good in that scenario, but to call him good is ludicrous, it's like sterling scoring from 2 yards every other week suddenly he's an amazing player? Wtf, if city didn't pass the ball around the way they do sterling would never even get a touch. Headlines/goals aren't everything... It's a sport, 11 vs 11, for 90 minutes... Making such a big deal about one split second, one kick, is retarded... Lingard is a brilliant player, I said that when he was at Birmingham. Rashford wouldn't even be on the bench if man united had strikers capable of doing the job... Just like Liverpool playing carragher when he was about 2 years and a lung transplant beyond retirement... Stop dick riding the headlines and educate yourself

This signing, to me, is more about the PR than the player. Here in the US, most of the average Joe’s knowledge of professional football is solely Pulisic. Chelsea will gain a MASSIVE amount of support from the casual stateside fans. More fans = more money. Sure, he’s a great player, but if I had to guess I’d say they see him more as a revenue stream than anything else. Just my opinion.

Sometimes, as an American that’s gotten into the sport this year and fell in love, it seems as if other countries really don’t want Americans to be into it. The guy is sitting here asking “why does the US want a superstar so bad?” Ummmm, because it will help progress the sport in this country maybe? We all know America’s been slow, molasses slow, in developing talent and interest to match the rest of the world. That tends to happen when all your best athletes usually flock to American football or basketball.

Messi was already the best South American youngester of all time at the age of ELEVEN. How is anyone supposed to compete with that? As it is, Christian might not be Archie Stark but with this level he might get to be close to reach where Keegan or Hoddle got at the Prem. That's more than enough for an American at this point in time. He is certaily head and shoulders above any other American born player in history at his age.

Horrible post by the crew to say that Sarri didn't know anything about the kid. Sarri said he didn't know the deal was being done NOW. Which is fine, he won't see him for 6 months. He said he gave a positive opnion to the board a month ago. Why is that so hard to communicate? Now, to the comments below: WOW. I'm impressed by how angry and all knowing so many people are. Obviously the financial side of EVERY major transfer comes into play. Shirt sales alone in the US over the next 1-2 years will cover his transfer fee. He is 20 years old and is being brought in for the future, not to be THE MAN in 2019-2020. I give the club credit here in identifying a young & possible long term cornerstone. Will he be, who knows, guess we'll have to actually wait to see how it plays out. At least I am going to, unlike lots of people on here who have already decided this is a win or a fail. Be clear on this as well, he is not being brought in to be a direct replacement incase Hazard goes to Madrid, it's to have a true right winger in place of Willian and/or Pedro in the coming years, yes, YEARS, plural. Also, don't forget the very possible upcoming transfer ban that they could be facing. They may have a very large spending January to prep for that.
