I was the youngest of 5 kids. When I left for basic training in 1987 I told my mom " someone has to do it". My father taught me that every Anerican man owed a few years to their nation and their citizens. It started with a four year enlistment and finished nearly 24 years later. Many times during those years I thought about the "if not me, than who". My oldest sister thought I would only go to combat for one tour and was surprised to find out that one tour didnt lock me out of going back. I told her it's better for me to return there than a fresh person that doesnt already know the tricks to survive

Carol, I know your pain, I've been through this hard time too, but I have never sent my son off to war. This weekend I sent my boyfriend off to his 4th deployment and it is so hard right now. Everyone says the year will go by fast, but those that say that never sent off a loved one. He'll be gone for 12 to 13 months, already it seems like a year and he just left this Sunday...yesterday! Stay busy is the key. If you ever need to talk I am here for you. A support system right now is a must and I am so happy to have my boyfriends family supporting me 100% and I in return will do my best for them. Staying strong and focused is what I intend to do so that he will be proud of me as I am sooo proud of him. He is making all the sacrifices for us and the USA, just like your son and husband are doing. I am an older girlfriend, and this is my boyfriends 17th year in the Army, but it is never easy no matter what age or how many times they deploy. You, you husband and son will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Our soldiers is my first priority, but so often those on the home front are the ones that are mostly overlooked. I know the Army tells us that they are here for us, but that is sometimes lonely in its own way. If that makes sense. Why We Miss War. How is it someone can go through the worst experience imaginable, and come home, back to their home, and their family, their country, and miss the war?” I think we miss brotherhood. We miss, in some ways, the opposite of killing. What we missed is connection to the other men we were with. Now, brotherhood is different from friendship. Friendship happens in society, obviously. The more you like someone, the more you'd be willing to do for them. Brotherhood has nothing to do with how you feel about the other person. It's a mutual agreement in a group that you will put the welfare of the group, you will put the safety of everyone in the group above your own. In effect, you're saying, "I love these other people more than I love myself.” In the military especially during war we know where we stand. When we come back home many of us dont. We find it hard to find people we can trust and dont know who has our back. But if I could do it all over again I wouldn't change a thing. When my brothers call I will always be there. BLUE CORD BROTHERHOOD. No mission to difficult. No sacrifice to great. Duty first. B R O 1st Infantry Division.

@@leannshilt5591 Okay. I hope you don't mind a bit of advice that comes from personal experience. It would be better for your career, assuming you're planning on serving till retirement, to go the other way. If you spend two years with the Guard and then go AD, you will lose much of the rank you built. I went from Specialist (E-4) to Private (E-2) after doing 18 months as a reservist and then going AD. It isn't hard to get the rank back, but it will put you behind your peers for promotion to SGT. Reserve time doesn't count nearly as much as AD time for promotion. If you haven't signed a contract you can still back out and go AD if that's what you choose. Another thing to consider is that your chain of command might not let you go AD. If you are in a critical MOS in your unit your command doesn't have to let you out of your contract - the needs of the force and all that. The reason being, the Guard - a state organization - has paid for your training. It would be a loss of that money - as well as the manpower shortage - to allow you to go AD - federal service. I'm not saying your chain of command won't let you go AD, but the possibility does exist. The only exception would be if you're going to college, especially if you're in ROTC. Even if you don't finish the program it's considered time in service for promotion. So it's possible that you could actually get a promotion after two years in the Guard rather than lose rank. I hope this helps with whatever decision you choose. It's a rare person who wants to serve these days. In the past, it was 1% of the population who served to protect the other 99%. Today it's down to .45%. I wish you well in your service, whatever course you decide to take.

It appears you are doing the same thing as my son and a few of his buddies. He's also going to attend college. He's already a member of the National Guard having finished basic and Infantry AIT last year. One other thing if your recruiter hasn't mentioned it. You can split train. You would attend basic training this summer and AIT after your high school graduation. You can also attend monthly drill, receiving pay as an E-1. I wish you all the best in your future service.

My oldest daughter swore into the United States Coast Guard back in October and leaves for basic July 9th. My son turns 17 next week on the 14th and swears into the MN National Guard the next day. I am not a veteran. I am an advocate and i lost my baby brother to suicide( He was a Marine) and Also my best friend to suicide back in 07 who was active army. I have many friends and family in the military and in every branch( I was suppose to join but backed out at the last minute- I was very stupid and have regretted it everyday) I am scared and nervous for my kids but one very proud proud momma

This sums up why I put the uniform on. I saw my family and friends and knew they were innocent of the threat that laid outside our borders. I saw the line in the sand and knew it would not hold if no one stood that line. IF not me, then who. Thank you for such a great song to explain it.

I still cry when I hear this. Some good friends are no longer with us. Either in the field or at home, they need to be remembered. Honour those who served, and don't forget the fallen Many have fallen after they returned home due to sickness or depression etc. Remember them as well.

My oldest son wanted to be a Marine at 6 years old. At 17 he asked me to sign on the dotted line with him that all he wanted for his 17 birthday. That was the hardest thing i had to do. Was giving my son to the United States Marine corp. His boots hits American soil as a vet in July 8.
