What an amazing difference! 👍 You likely picked up a little extra mph and better fuel efficiency by cleaning and polishing your logs. Anything you can do to reduce drag is a good thing. 👍

Sanding it w/ 1K grit helped the polishing act, now block a piece of 1500 grit around a sanding block and wet sand em, you'll be able to cook on em.

Looks awesome! I have never polished a pontoon but I have done aluminum motorcycle parts. Wet sanding with like a 1500 grit then I use Mother’s aluminum polish. Comes out looking like chrome. That’s a good dad you got there. That is very tedious work! Keep the updates coming!

I think vinegar softens calcium. I’ve used it before to clean old fishtanks and it works OK you’ll still have to do some sanding but it gets some of the thicker stuff off and would save quite a bit of sanding. On the glass I usually use it with a razor blade and it takes off about 80 to 90% of it. There’s another product called “barkeepers friend” and it works really well and is supposed to be safe on most metals.

If you take yor toon to a semi truck wash and ask for the acid bath, it will give it a uniform satin finish that’s very easy to polish from there. They use acid to wash the tanks and wheels in semi trucks, no it won’t hurt the toons in any way.

Most every aluminum boat, canoe, or pontoon I've ever seen was made of anodized aluminum. Your sanding and polishing has removed all the anodized surface. After the pontoons get immersed in water and used a bit, I think you'll be disappointed in its appearance. Even wax won't protect the aluminum from dulling after exposure.

Prior boat was an Aluminum Starcraft. Plan was to paint strip the paint off of it, then polish it. Once the paint was off, I noticed the prior owner cleaned it with a wire-wheel before painting. Constant deep scratches everywhere, that killed any chance of that boat being polished. Trust me, I know the beauties of a wire-wheel, but I also know when not to use one.
@Tylerthomasmiller84
5 жыл бұрын
@@BrandonsGarage a fine wire wheel would have been perfect. If you try to use a twisted/coarse you'll for sure have an issue on aluminum.
@justchillinout2002

@@Tylerthomasmiller84 Using steel on aluminum is problematic. IMO, using the wire-wheel that isn't brass would have similar results to using steel wool on aluminum. The steel fibres get into the pours of the aluminum and rust in the water. Counter productive. Not to mention, I think the wire-wheel would be just too aggressive.
@redsnoozin8531

I used a fine brass wire wheel on my pontoons. It did a great job getting the calcium off. It also scratched the hell out of it and I’ll never get mine to polish like that. I think you made the right decision using a sander.
