He certainly got it right on the Cynergy product-it comes equipped with a cell phone hand crank charger that does NOT work. Good review and a deserved last place finish in this review. Tuning in for more from this guy. He called it right.

I also found that 1 or 2 years later the crank flashlights battery will not hold the charge. It is still useful in a emergency as it will light while you crank, so if you are in a situation where you do not need your hands, you can use the light and find your way around, but if you have to perform any action, then you are screwed. though again, in a survival situation, if you with family, I guess worst case you delegate somebody to hold and crank while you perform whatever action you need under the light.

This is the limitation of lithium technology at the moment. Most batteries have a life of 2-4 years. If you are looking for a solution not involving lithium....then its candles. And....also....hydrogen fuel cells: charged.io/10-alternatives-lithium-ion-batteries/

I've been using a Unicom Powerbeam daily for over three years and it's still going strong thanks to its old school and surprisingly small sealed lead-acid battery. Pics of the teardown www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=146520 should be good for another two years at least before storage performance noticeably degrades.

Glad I came across this review! (Liked and subscribed.) I need a torch for my car. After years of unreliable battery torches that went dead in the glove box, I bought an early-model crank torch that cost dearly (around $50 from Brookstone). It had a standard bulb, so it didn't last as long as LED. It expired and now I'm ready for a new one. I do think I'd like to get the 2-in-1, since I needed a phone charge when I got a flat in a snowstorm and wanted a tow, instead of trying to change a flat on the highway. I would have preferred not to run the car for a charge, because I didn't know if I'd be there overnight. Very grateful, Steve

You need to do another review. There are many more handcrank ones on Amazon that need to be tested. The Secur product in the link is discontinued. Home depot sells it for $14.99 USD, as well as other handcrank flashlight products like MayDay. Test that one out especially all the new hankcrank products in comparison. I already found the longest Lasting Tactical Flashlight, it is Nitecore MH12 V2(1500 hours). Now i need a long lasting and waterproof handcrank one.
@NotEvenDeathCanSaveU

The 1500 hours trash you mentioned is on a setting that produces almost no light at all, its one of those tactical trash bullshit flashlights where the sole word "tactical" adds 60-90 dollar price to it, 25-35 dollar bicycle lights are better than that overpriced garbage, for a third of a price they're durable, bright, relatively long lasting, waterproof and even weight less.. Not to mention any water-resistant crank flashlight will beat that 1500 hour tactical turd when it comes light without recharging, meaning the actual recharging using power bank or similar which you either might not have or it may already be dead if you get stuck in like a forest or some similar survival-ish situation. Also it seems the secur light is now sold under other names like primalcamp or thorfire

I wish I could show the one my school gave me because it didn't have a problem unless discharging after a moth of inactivity counts. it was just on and on and off and i have it on for a few hours and its just this small hand thing no bigger then a old phone. Its similar to the secure but I don't think the brand works anymore, it has 3 Blue LEDs and lights up the whole room and you can control the brightness cranking slowly while its on. It was blue and yellow and it and looked more like a kids toy. I remember the brand was on it but i don't remember what it was

Would be nice to actually know the type of battery and capacity. Also the raw output of the hand crank, although that would require a teardown. Personally I think these hand crank lights are no good using a battery. We have supercapacitors and those can run through a million discharge cycles, rather than a battery which will die. A handcrank light is something you should be able to depend on in an emergency, and a lithium cell might just be dead when you actually need it the most, unlike a supercapacitor.

I bought one of the secures 3 and 1/2 years ago for 15,99,, awesome product, cranked it for a few minutes played with it for a couple of minutes and stuck it in a backpack. Then pulled it out 3 years later expecting it to be dead and it was as bright as the day I cranked it. I tried to get another one and the price has now gone up to $36.99 on Amazon. The product worked, so they cranked the price up, typical.

Is the Secur's crank easy enough to be cranked by a child or is there a better option for a kid? I may buy them no matter what since you can always strap the Secur to the outside of their pack and let the sun charge it. Can you do a video where you test it's claim of being water proof and how well it performs after being charge with the solar cell?

As I stated on other reviews these things have a max lifetime. They just don't charge anymore after a while. Had one in the survival kit that did crank but did not charge. That's not very helpful in an emergency... However the concept is perfect since we are all focused on 300+ lumens survival lights while all you need in emergency is something that does not discharge and keeps working.

I've had that same secur since the video. Just cranked it for a minute....still going. If you are using it as a day to day light....you may be cranking it too fast. I would advise not relying on this as an "after a while" use case, rather a last resort use case. static1.squarespace.com/static/517ff2fde4b0337a302a9c68/t/53a1f209e4b0b4f1b3a9cd57/1403122185987/SP-1001+instruction+manual.pdf Further, lithium has a guaranteed lifetime of 5 years max...but future tech could improve that: www.computerworld.com/article/3060005/mobile-wireless/scientists-can-now-make-lithium-ion-batteries-last-a-lifetime.html

Yes mine was a non-brand version but already the second one that died. I found it amazingly illuminating (hihi) how we used a mickey mouse light the whole vacation for everything from reading to finding the toilet on a camping place to emergency car trouble etc... It just kept going and the old-fashion soft bulb light was so much better than my powerful cree survival torch. It made me realize that a real proper emergency flashlight should just be like the Secur... Nothing fancy bright, nothing that charges your phone or has SOS strobe functions. Just something that works and can be cranked. And that you can use to read a book in the car because lets face it... The chance of winning the lottery is probably higher then getting in an emergency black out, snowed in, without phone etc... A modern day emergency light should just be something you always have in the trunk ready to grab when you need to walk through the woods to a gas station when your car brakes down.
