Ice fishing weed flat crappie in northern Wisconsin. Jason Mitchell joins guide Josh Teigen to share some great tips for finding crappie on big weed flats.
This mild winter in particular, there are some strong weed patterns in shallower water because of the lack of ice and snow. Crappie often concentrate where there is any variation or variety where the weeds get denser or taller. These lakes have very clear water with good weeds growing as deep as twenty feet. Prime fishing times are often around sunrise and sunset on these clear water lakes.
We find and stay on fish by gridding the locations with holes and power fishing through the spots with the Pinhead Pro that uses an aggressive cadence to pull fish up out of weeds and trigger fish without bait. We also spread out tip downs with small minnows to cover more water and give us more information.
We share some setting tips for using the Vexilar FLX-30 for tuning out weeds to see fish better. The FLX-30 is the ultimate flasher if you do a lot of weed fishing.
