@@CaseyFinSF NONSENSE! "This thing"... the classic stall - spin caused by way too tight a turn, with a high wing loading warbird, with the gear (and possibly the flaps) down, does not happen to "the most experienced RC pilots." Especially on a maiden flight. I have plenty of empathy for the fellow. In 45 years of RC flying I too have totaled a couple of very nice (and expensive) planes. It's just that I do not want the inexperienced reader to believe that large RC planes are just an accident waiting to happen. We have enough trouble fighting silly government regulations already. Your statement.. "a slight miscalculation or just a little misjudgment in a turn or a gust of wind at the wrong time.." is ludicrous. If these things were true no one would fly RC, let alone invest $5K or much more in a plane that could be destroyed by a gust of wind! Have you actually flown large RC planes? Certainly not here in Texas where we don't stop until it's gusting to 25 mph or better.

Classic warbird pilot error, sorry to say, Mustangs especially need speed! Looked underpowered or the power setting was low, either way you have to watch the speed and energy of the plane before making any maneuvers after take off. Would have been better off with the flaps at half setting a little longer through the turn into the wind.

anyone in the comments that said there was enough airspeed are wrong, sorry but this plane was close to stall on the climb out, then going into a turn just killed the little airspeed it did have, its sad loss of a lovely looking model but it should not have happened warbirds need speed for the wings to fly, i have several 20cc warbirds inc fw190 and p51, they all need power on, i also have high wing and bi-plane scale they all fly different. such a shame.

I am amazed at the comments regarding this loss. Gentlemen, The P-51 Mustang is a beautifully flying plane. I have flown quite a number of them. Actually maidened a little 20cc'er yesterday with a 26cc gas engine. My previous larger Mustangs fly even better. The key things to remember about a Mustang is precisely this: SPEED...they do NOT float like an aerobatic plane. One can "NOT" make a steep turn as was made with this model at such a low speed. Yes, they will turn on a dime and give you change. But you must, must...MUST carry speed. This crash is absolutely and undeniably the exact result of a classic wing stall due to a very low flying speed. The retracts really had no affect nor did the flaps. In fact, the flaps probably gave it a bit of a better chance of surviving. But even a stalled wing with flaps deployed will still stop flying and fall from the sky. Power: Keep that power "ON". You can not expect a high spirited warbird to lift off and fly as an aerobatic plane. They just simply do not have the wing area. Easing into the power on rollout, then advancing as the tail comes up. And finally close to or at full power should be maintained until a safe flying altitude is achieved. Flaps: Maintain those flaps to transition the wing from "lift" to flying. And this comes with power and speed. In short, this accident could and most absolutely would have been eliminated with one, "ONE" corrective action. POWER. POWER=SPEED=LIFT=A manageably flying plane. The philosophy of the Mustang having a terrible wing tip stall issue is real to an extent. However so does the P-40. Most all warbirds, (model and full scale alike) have the same characteristics. Plain and simple, you MUST keep the wing flying...PERIOD. Never forget that main and most major point and the odds are this will never happen again.
@StevenPowell-s4b

That slow turn stall spin has killed a number of full scale pilots. The P 51 is notorious for a base to final crash exactly as shown in this video. I have a friend who owned a full scale P 51 and on advice from others he went up to 10,000 feet and did that turning stall. He said it was probably the scariest thing he ever did in an airplane. If I recall, he lost almost 5000 feet in the recovery.

Just to put in my two pennyworth... first off thanks Dom - excellent filming as always! The model looked adequately powered and well enough set up to me, but doing a maiden flight on a public fly-in is not best practise (Bickley or anywhere else!). Secondly I always recommend taxi runs at increasing speed until the model rises of its own accord. Like a full size test pilot would do. That way you know elevator trim is close to right. Using flaps for take-off is something I save for later flightw when I have a good feel for the flight characteristics. (And I would try nothing for the first time in public) What I suspect is that the pilot was too tentative on the day (landing gear left down, not enough throttle). On a first flight you need altitude before trying slow speed manoeuvring. If the model is going to be rebuilt the pilot should be reassured that it will fly okay, but maybe add a bit more washout to the tips just to be sure. Best wishes, Robin

As I watched the take off he started off with a little bit of flap, good rudder and elevator inputs along with decent throttle management. I saw a good climb out and thought this guy knows what he’s doing. Then the mistakes came pouring out very quickly. At a considerably slower flying speed he was still relying on his thrust and takeoff flaps. Still at a slower speed he tucked away the flaps, left the gear down and put it into a tight left aileron bank turning off from the head wind. A recipe for a disaster. Sorry for the loss but total pilot error here I’m afraid.

@@justanotherguy469 Basically stated, washout is a slight twist in a wing that puts the chord line at the wing's tip at a negative angle of attack compared to where the wing meet the fuselage. The washout then attempts to make the stall occur closer to the fuselage first, while out on the edge there would still be lift. This can aid the pilot in better control of the stall situation.

As a self taught RC pilot, I built my beautiful Sig Seriorita, bragging on it six ways from Sunday. I practice on the ground without a wing for months before I had the guts and basic experience to keep it on the runway and take off with it. I remember that first event as if it were yesterday. With the wing on, it lifted off at a steep climb. My jaw felt like it had landed in my lap and the transmitter I was holding might as well have been a piece of toast I had for breakfast. The plane stalled out to the left behind some shrubs and was the first of 26 crashes of which I learned how to keep the simple trainer in the air. That was 20 some years ago and a lifetime of experiences I can tell my grandchildren.

Crazy to see that its the SAME way i crashed my mustang on maiden... (its not as big, its a foamie. A flitetest mustang. Although i customized it to have lights and retracts). It was flying GREAT, i even managed to break all my personal speed records and hit a crazy 203kmph (126mph) level flight speed downwind. But i made a fatal mistake shortly after. I slowed the plane down for a turn, and for some STUPID reason, I decided to set the aircraft to sport mode (100% throws on control surfaces). The plane flipped and at this point it was barely 200ft high, before I could correct my mistake, it smashed into the ground at 165kmph. Luckily, it somehow survived. Well most of the airframe did. There was damage to the powerpod, which I fixed. Now i had a removable wing (originally, FT mustang does not have a removable wing). That crash strained the fuselage and the rubberband mount tore off a section of the fuselage. Ive fixed everything that was damaged, but now im not flying it again till i gain some experience. My pilot skills are between beginner and intermediate, I can do all kinda of stunts, including 3d hover on one of my planes but landing is the hardest for me. Ive also flown 5ft above the ground, inverted. But for somw reason, when its time to land, I suddenly become the most newbie a person can be.

This causes countless real deaths every year. He entered a spin and could not recover. At low air speeds and high rpm, high angle of attack, engine torque makes the aircraft yaw left the strongest.. Combine that with turning, increasing load factor and wing loading thus increasing stall speed and pulling up during the turn he stalled and got into a left hand spin. This kills many people every year during the base to final turn.
