Actually, if you knew anything about biomechanics and how injuries occur, you would know that spinal injuries are often more severe in low speed crashes than in higher speed crashes because more energy is passed to the passenger, and it is dissipated through the spine as a shock wave so that the vertebrae strike each other as the limit in their range of motion is reached.

You must consider mass and speed (known as velocity--which includes direction--in scientific contexts) to determine impact force. A car backing itself into a pole at 5 mph should do no damage. Bumpers are supposed to prevent damage TO THE VEHICLE to prevent a vehicle from becoming unsafe to operate. A smaller car going 10 would do less damage. A heavy truck at 10 mph would do much more damage. That is a 2011 Nissan Rouge weighing about 3300 lbs. going 10 mph. The force is about 11,000 pounds, except that the car being hit moved ahead transferring most of it.

10mph is actually pretty fast and there is always going to be damage. But should not be so severe!

Years ago, bumpers stood out so damage to the car was minimal. Today bumpers are flush with the hood, so the hood and fenders takes the hit and buckles. It's all marketing so that your car gets totaled faster and you have to go buy a new one.

This is the perfect demonstration that bumpers on cars today are completely useless, and even designed to create as much damage as possible from such a low impact speed in order to keep body shops busy. I'd be curious to see this same test done on cars with actual, external metal bumpers from the seventies. There probably wouldn't be any damage at all.
@dirtysquirrel8611

They’re designed to crumple, to cushion impacts. Older cars, with stronger metals that don’t damage, cause more injuries to the people inside them.

@@NikoBell12 I maintain that they're not performing what they were originally designed for, which is to "bump"' into things without resulting in severe damage at speeds as low as this! I know that they're now minimizing the impact on passengers at higher speeds compared to the old ones. But this much damage from only 10 mph? Come on!

modern cars are meant to crumple and absorb the impact to reduce the G-forces on the driver. If this was 1960 both cars would need a little paint.
