One of my top locations to see on my trip in Turkey was Şeytan Kalesi, or Satan’s Castle, in Ardahan in the north-east corner of the country.
On the way there it rained really heavily at times and at our arrival it just started again. With thunder roaring in the distance I was uncertain whether I’d be able to reach the castle without being drenched or not. In any case, I thought it was worth the risk to check it out, we had come this far after all!
Besides the rain there was also a really strong wind. I was sure I shouldn’t fly the drone in this weather but the location was to tempting to resist. As you might have expected, it lead to my second crash with the Mavic Mini 2.
The Şeytan itself is an impressive structure place in the middle of a fantastic landscape. It has probably been place here to protect the crossing over the ravine and over the millennia it has belonged to more or less everyone in the region. Each owner seems to have added their own contributions to the structure as many different stages of construction can be seen in the walls.
The name comes from someone having seen a devil in the area, a story which has remained in local folklore. In Russian and Georgian it is known as Kadzhis-tsiche, however I have not found out what the name means.
