The form factor on those are massive for what is actually inside. The shell is bigger than my triple rec. There is one that is in rough shape near me for like $150, it is tempting. From what I remember, these things need to be cranked a bit to get a useable tone. At low volumes they tend to trend toward their solid state siblings.

Maybe that low volume is what reminded me of my Crate GT1200 from forever ago. It is huge and heavy as bricks. Not sure why the shell is so big! For $150 you should do it!

Cool amp. I remember when these first came out. I wanted one really bad but I didn't have the funds for one. They can be picked up pretty cheap these days but you should budget a couple hundred bucks for some possible amp repairs. After thirty years some parts are bound to need replacing. Otherwise, once it's all looked over by a tech, any necessary parts are replaced, and fresh tubes are installed these amps are killer.

It really is cool. The guy I picked it up from was an older gentleman with quite an insane amount of amps. He had just put new tubes in this as well. I feel pretty lucky to have scored it for $350. Especially with tube costs right now. He was a really cool guy.

Did you find that Channel 2 was SIGNIFICANTLY quieter than Channel 1? I have owned three of these and they ALL had that issue. Even with the Channel 2 volume DIMED it was just not very loud. PS - read some of the other comments, I would dodge the GX900. It's OKAY sounding but like this amp, very bright and VERY solid state sounding. It is also cheaply made and prone to jack failures. That was my experience at least.

@@tyrannosaurusriffs I've looked at the inside of them and gone over the schematics and it doesn't look like there are any swollen or leaking caps, not that an amp that's as old as a voodoo couldn't benefit from some new high temp vishay caps, but it looks like that's just intentionally how they're designed. Crate uses some opto resistors (no idea why, never seen that in an amp before) and I suspect that's what causes the volume loss. One could mod the amp and get rid of them to see if that changes things but for a quick, no modification solution, I put an mxr cae line driver in the loop and I use it like a master volume to bring the signal back up. It works great and gives you a much better sense of how they sound without having to pull the soldering iron out and start doing surgery.
