I think the reason you probably had trouble layering the mahogany over the pink is because you had already burnished that pink color into the paper so it physically couldn't hold anymore pigment- could be wrong but it seems you pressed really hard with that pink on the first go around (probably because the crayola pigment wasn't what you were used to? idk) so I think any pencil would have trouble going over that- however I have to agree with what you said about the vibrancy of the colors offered by crayola and the lack of depth in the piece... you could probably also try layering complementary colors over the color u have (so like green over the red/pink) to get more or of the right sorta deep color. I know u usually use prismas but I hope this helps some :)

I so love you Rae! Your sense of humor is fantastic. I always enjoy your opinions and struggles. I gotta say that the most expensive thing I've purchased, was a full 170 piece set of Touch Five Markers. I bought a 60 piece set, an 80 piece set, and a 30 piece set that I got to handpick each color. A little bit more than the CaranD'Ache product you tried. Yeah. Now, I'm using pencils. I started a coloring challenge, and set the rules for myself, and I have been enjoying trying all the "cheap" oil-based colored pencil sets. I have a few sets of cheap-cheap-cheap colored pencils, Crayola, CraZart, Prang, Liquid Mark....just to name a few. I have used each set, even if they were just 24 pieces. Colored an entire page with each set. Using the Positive Art set of 120 at the moment. Not my most favorite out of the oil-based sets. I'm still feeling my Feela 152-piece set, and the Marco Raffine' set of 72. I do want to get the Marco Renoir set of 100, but I'm waiting until the price is a "tad" lower. Love your videos! Thanks so much for sticking with it. Mindy

Hi Rae. I know this is an older video that I am commenting on, but I still feel the need to comment So........ There are a "bunch" of lower end pencil brands that came out on the market for last Christmas's season. I have purchased a few of them, for the sake of trying them. Coloring in one book of 24 pages, using a different set per page, I went to the page with my heavy-handed nature, and burnished straight out of the box. I was looking to see how much pigment was in each pencil brand, and how the wax or oils behave under such conditions. I did some color stacking, and very little layering. Mostly just fill the spaces through burnishing. Some of the pages show that I was enjoying using the set more, and I did indeed shade of layer, in addition to the burnishing, but I tried to keep to the pattern I set for myself. I am going to make a video of the finished pages talking about my personal experiences, and impressions of each set on the paper that was used in this particular book. All that giant mouthful said, I am wondering if you would be willing to try some of those lower end sets? Feela, Guanghui, Positive Art, Lelix, and so on. Brands off of the top of my head, mind you. I do like the Feela pencils, and I am an oil based, harder than Prismacolor pencil kind of gal. I am far too smeary with my Prismacolors. I will have to work on that. Please let me know if you have done this. I'm usually out of any loop there may be, so I apologize, but I'm really interested in your thoughts. Thanx, Mindy

When you review any type of pencil (or watercolor, oil and acrilic), make sure you also try each on several types of paper. I notice in several of your pencil "review" videos, you seem to always use the same paper (and color). Even the hack blending video. Not much you can judge by only one type of paper no matter what you use to blend with. This is the reason I suggested you look up Lisa from Lachri Fine Art. I'm in no way affiliated with her or her brand/channel. I just think you would benefit greatly from her. I've been a portrait artist for well on 30 years and I'm still learning. Good luck, and thanks for your time =}

Instantly demonetized? Great review Rae. I admit I am very excited about this. I feel their next batch will be an improved formula. If they can just get on their game with the same texture with say polychromos for ease of blendability. I always loved Crayola because they are easy to blend out. However the pigment always fails until you start to layer upon layer. With these they are pigmented as heck but the blendability just doesn't match. It leaves a less cohesive feel. I would buy these for my adult colouring books however I tend to do a lot of blending. Maybe with a tortilon or tissue?

Dee Ca. Ikr. Since I’m still very very young I can only basically afford the 24 pack with the money I have. I would’ve been able to get that 72 set if it was the same price. I think the price got raised since they became so popular.

If you mean an ad at the beginning of the video, I got one. If you mean during the video, I did not get one. Thank you for the review. I do have the other 2 signature series items, the gel pens and the brush/fine tip markers. I had the colored pencils in my wishlist, but I wasn't sure about them due to the price. I really like the brush markers. I like that they have 2 colors that go well with each other for detailing. The gel pens are gel pens. They are nice, but probably a little expensive based on other gel pens you can get. I love metallic/glitter so I was a sucker for them ;) I think you are probably correct at their target market. I want to get the Koh-i-noor polycolor so I'm saving my money toward those over these based on your review.

You know the one thing I hate the most about other artists pencil swatches. The try to blend them with the same method regardless of difference in texture. You don’t blend a pencil with lots of pigment the same way you blend a more sheer pencil. That’s not how that works. You understand this concept and it just makes me happy.

Jose Manuel thats what I do with crayola, but it is very time consuming. Sometimes it takes me days, depending on the size of the paper.

I gave my mom the few shades of crayola signature that I had for her coloring books, and she loves them to pieces. I'd gotten them used so at the time I'd thought they were just super vibrant for coloring on black paper. She prefers prismacolors, but between regular crayolas and signatures, signatures wins for her hands down.

It’s really sad that the original cheap Crayola’s are better than their more expensive counterpart.

Can you try the Marco Raffine pencils? They're about 15$ for 72 of them and seem comparable to these. They aren't as great as prismacolors but are the inbetween between regular crayola and prismas, imo.

Your technique and art skills are not quite up to par with other colored pencil youtubers out here...I think you need to work more on that before you try out and review other premium products. This is meant to be a constructive criticism because as a viewer I admire your passion and enthusiasm but as a consumer I would like to eliminate operator error on the products that I'm watching being reviewed.

For anyone wanting a relatively good, but cheap coloured pencils (but who doesn't live in america or doesn't know Crayola) I really recommend Panduro hobby pencils. I use them and they have a good pigment. They don't seem as good as Crayola, but they work for me. An amazing vid as usual! I also want to see a comparison as I don't buy more expensive pencils and thus I can't compare.
