My grandfather was struck by lightning when he was a kid. A group of his friends were swimming when the storm started, they got out of the water and were standing under a tree, lightning struck the tree and traveled trough them all, he has a scar on each side of his body where it passed through him. He is in his 90's now and still has the scars. Sadly he lost his whole group of friends that day, he was the only survivor and was still in a coma for 2 weeks afterwards. He has the newspaper article from the incident in a picture frame.

@@vomm it's hard to watch because I empathize with that family on a lot of levels. First, the kids seeing their father get hit is horrific. Then the mother handles the situation perfectly by getting the kids to safety and then coming back out and trying her hardest to get her husband to safety, all the while he's using whatever ability he has to help her out, but he's mostly incapacitated. It's a very intense scene and being a father of three boys myself this struck a deep chord within me. I immediately wanted her to know I was cheering her on as she was doing her best to take care of her family. All the while the kids were probably screaming from inside the house watching from one of the windows. Maybe you don't have kids or maybe your sense of empathy doesn't readily trigger but I found it extremely hard to watch. Lightning struck somewhere close by and the violence of it was incredible. I didn't see the strike itself but the entire sky just turned green and purple for a couple of seconds and everything was illuminated so brightly I only saw blotches for a couple of secs. The sound however was beyond description. Years later I watched an entire mountainside get blown up during road construction, I've heard planes go supersonic directly overhead, I was within 10 meters / 30 feet when a truck tire exploded - and let me tell you that none of those sounds even come close to what I heard at that lightning strike.

I was up close to a lightning strike. I'll never forget it for as long as I live. I was at my brother's apartment, and we were sitting on his balcony watching the thunderstorm. He was on the 9th floor, and we had a fantastic open view of the river which was not far from the building. Saw some real nice lightning bolts, and about 20-30 mins into the storm, the light post outside the building got struck. The pole was I'd say, only about 20-30 feet away from the building, and when it got struck, holy fuck was that something. The thick bolt hit the post, and there was silence for as long as it took for my eyes to widen, and then the loudest sound I have ever heard in my life. There's no way for me to describe the immensity of it. It was so, incredibly loud and powerful, but while it had that immense boom, it also had a shattering quality to it. It bellowed, and shattered in front of me, and then I heard it echo through the buildings in the downtown of our city. The shockwave that ripped through us was fierce, you could really feel the power held within that bolt. It was like getting kicked in the chest, but feeling the entire blow throughout your body. Man, it was intense. We both jumped up cursing, and ran back into his apartment, lol. Man, that was such a crazy moment. Didn't capture it on video though, we were just hanging out having a beer at the time.

For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words." I used to enjoy walking in thunderstorm (not that I did it intentionally, but whenever I got caught in one I didn't complain), until one day a few years ago. I was walking up to a pedestrian crossing when huge lightning struck a small house on the opposite side of the street directly in front of me. Scared me shitless, blinded me for a second and my ears started ringing. Took me a few moments to shake it off and cross the street, and I picked up the pace considerably. I tell you, lightning is no joke. Yes, there HAVE been many cases of people surviving strikes, but these bolts contain a billion volts of energy, 50,000'F of heat, and 80% of survivors suffer permanent injuries, including memory loss, that if they didn't die, plus the crash of thunder can destroy your hearing. For reasons like this, as shown in the video, even though I study it, that's why I would NEVER go outside anytime there is a severe thunderstorm. It's too deadly and unpredictable. It's also very hard to believe lightning is actually only 1/2in thick.

When I was a kid I danced out in a thunder storm with an umbrella on a table, definitely not my smartest moment. Years later I was sitting on my windowsill, window open, watching another thunderstorm when the transformer meters away blew up and I honestly passed away internally. It’s amazing how humbling Mother Nature can be, fair enough to say I stay in my bed whenever we have a thunderstorm.
@Quicksilver_Cookie

I honestly don't think there's any correlation been discovered between using an umbrella in the thunderstorm and higher risk of being struck by lightning. You have to understand that at that level of charge difference in conductivity between you, and somebody who doesn't have an umbrella is negligible. If it can go through materials most people think as being non-conductive, it can certainly can go through a person. With or without an umbrella.
