@@lindamoulton1560 that's such a sweet and unexpected reaction from the crna!! Here’s my favorite story. Spoiler alert, it was me. I was a medical student on my surgery rotation when I had to go and fully tear my Achilles, thus needing repair. On the day of my surgery I was actually assigned to anesthesia, and being the stupid med student I was, I decided to go into the hospital until I had to go to pre-op. Told the attending in the morning, no issues. When it came time, I told the anesthesia resident on the case I was observing that I had to go to pre op, and he scoffed at me, saying something about an excuse (mind you I was on crutches with a cast on my leg). So I went, had the surgery, and who is at the head of the bed as I wake up? That resident. What does my stupid ass say? “I told you I had to go to pre-op, do you believe me now?”

I also reacted to dormicum that way...I know it's not a proper anaesthetic rather a relaxer that also causes amnesia but mentally I felt horrible for days after and violated because I also remembered a lot of the procedure (gastroscopy/colonoscopy) and it was very painful in my case. When they used just propofol I was fine. Asked a very experienced head of the department and he said that dormicum is completely unreliable in that people tolerate it very differently and that it seems to cause almost absurd mood swings (aggression as well)...and that's why they don't use it...

My husband was in a coma for two weeks, and they had him under HEAVY anesthesia. Most of the staff had never seen someone need that much, but he kept waking up (not fully, but you know what I mean), so they had to keep making it stronger. They assured us he wouldn't remember anything and that people don't even dream under anesthesia. But to this day he recalls having vivid, crazy dreams during that time, and some of the things he remembers "dreaming" coincide with things that actually happened in the room around him. A little scary actually.

Same with my sister-in-law. She has been twilighted several times, between 11 and 40 days each episode. The nurse always asks us not to talk while in the room with her, because she gets agitated and tries to wake up. After she is brought back to consciousness she hallucinates for several hours. When she's fully back to her conscious self, she can tell us who came to visit her and any topics of conversation that came up. She doesn't mention dreams during twilight, but she has really vivid ones as they back off on the meds. She had red hair until she was 5. That recessive gene causes all sorts of unusual reactions to medications. When I realized I have the recessive gene for red hair my own sensitivities made a lot more sense! (I can take a 1/2 dose of an over the counter muscle relaxer like Pamprin and not have control of my limbs for two days, lol)

A good anesthesiologist is worth their weight in gold. My son was always a tough one. And every time he came out and I was let into recovery, the anesthesiologist would be planted in a chair beside him starring at his vitals on the monitor with a scowl until he woke up. (fifteen minutes later... at which point the doctor would roll his eyes and say, "He's fine." My kid powered through the drugs like superman.) The awesome thing is that once my kid was nice and awake and everything was okay one anesthesiologist had told me that he was their toughest, most terrifying, and favorite patient. At one point the doctor thought he was asleep and they had barely started when my son giggled and whispered, "I'm faking." The poor doctor said it was terrifying at the time, but hilarious in hindsight. My boy was very little at the time. I am sorry, but I've got the stories bubbling up for some reason tonight. We lost him a couple of years ago at the age of 22 and sometimes the laughs are a nice memory. He was a character. I'll shaddup now. lol!

The first time I was going on and on about hot dogs, the second time I was talking about my husband (oops😌😆) and the most recent surgery I was having a long conversation about the different types of anesthesia and how they affect the brain.😊

As a teenager, I woke up while intubated (that was a weird experience - it felt like my mouth was full of blood, but I could breathe easily). My recollection is that I could move my head, but not open my eyes, and then it felt like a mask was placed on my face. The next thing I remember was regaining full consciousness while being wheeled to recovery. I was 15, and about 5'8", but I only weighed 93 lb. So while my mass was small, my liver's mass probably wasn't. I've long wondered if that combination somehow confounded the anaesthesiologist's dosage/weight chart.

Me and anesthesia are unfortunately not very good friends. I take awhile to wake back up, and on my last surgery I remember hearing " I'm surprised she's going home tonight, hysterectomy patients usually stay." Which freaked me out because part of the surgery was hysteroscopy not -ectomy. Thankfully I heard someone correct him before passing out again lol

After the versed but before the anesthesia I was telling everyone that would listen in the operating room I thought it looked like a unorganized mess and they should really clean it up. Then immediately after surgery I started getting out of the bed in the recovery area saying I felt great and was ready to go home now 😆

On our way to the OR my anesthesiologist gave me some like pre-med or something to relax me and I remember it hit me REALLY fast and I looked up at her and was like “I don’t know what you gave me but damn that’s strong” and that’s the last thing I remember until recovery where I vaguely remember drinking sprite and eating a popsicle and asking for a second popsicle. Then I barely remember trying to put my clothes on in the bed. Then next thing I know I’m home LOL

I had an emergency appendectomy (it had ruptured) and woke up with drains. When I woke up the nurse was emptying them and I told her to get out and send a real doctor in to take care of me. I’m a nice person, and I remembered thinking that it was a rude thing to say... I didn’t even know what I meant by it!

@@CoppertopLeopard Yeah that's how my gallbladder surgery went! I woke up screaming and crying from an anesthesia-induced nightmare! At least two nurses held me down and told me to breathe, etc, it was very scary.

Did they give you morphine? Nonstop barfing is my morphine reaction. For years I thought I was allergic, but it's now acknowledged as a very common side effect where your vestibular function is disturbed. They can give you an anti-nausea med before surgery to keep it from happening, or forego the morphine and use something else.

I have had many surgeries due to cancers, knee surgeries including TKR... and heart surgeries including AVR... I always tell my crew that they are my favorite people and I crack jokes getting into the room and onto the table. I always say, bring it on heavy cuz I don’t wanna know nothing! Waking up... I am peaceful and when I get checked on, I tell them they were my favorite person in the room!

My last surgery was a very different experience as it was the second day the hospital was open for elective surgeries after last year's shutdown. I'm not a lover of anesthesia and find it interesting that as a patient I research the best Doctor for my surgery, yet I meet the most important person in the room on the day of surgery for a minute. I l like hearing the funny stories and what people say coming out of anesthesia.

YES MORE MORE MORE !!!! Also Ive had a lot of anesthesia prox every month for my neuphrostomy tubes which need to be changed every month, all have been good, except for one time I was having surgery at another hospital and and my earring came back during the surgery and I heard my urologist joking around with some not so good jokes that are kinda well rated R and when I was finally awake he came in and I was like I really like your joke about dah dah dat da..(the joke he was talking about) and you should have seen his face... he was in shock that I actually heard it. Another time same doctor I was in the recovery room and he was going to some type of fucttion and had a tuxedo on, for the event and well I kinda puked on him from the oxygen ...LOL I told himi I was gonna do that.. I warned him.. he didnt step back away from me. Needless to say he was a little late for the event.

When I had an upper endoscopy I remember them waking me up and I turned away toward the wall and said "No! I have 4 kids! Please just let me sleep!" And later I heard the doctor on the other side of the curtain laughing with a nurse over me saying that 🤣

LOL whenever I have had surgery and I am coming out of anesthesia, I have been told that I always cry and say that I can't breathe even though my O2 Sats are 99/98%. NO idea why and I honestly can't remember doing it when I am fully lucid.

When I had an endoscopy procedure done, my CRNA was obviously not super happy with her job because I told her "Well I'm going to nursing school and I'm thinking about becoming a CRNA" and then she proceeded to complain and whine about her job and how I couldn't POSSIBLY want to work in anesthesia. I woke up later in recovery and the first thing I said to my mom was "Sheila (name changed) doesn't want me to be a CRNA can you BELIEVE this, what am I going to do" hahaha.

I've only had one experience with surgery/general anesthesia and waking up was the absolute worst. Some nurse was leaning over me saying my name and in the instant that I became conscious I was in excruciating pain and couldn't breath. It was horrible. I'd love to see baby Juliet 👶 😍

When asked in the recovery room whether I had any pain, I told them it only hurt "on the [X City] side." Everybody was mystified. It made perfect sense to me; I can't tell left from right easily, but I know which side of the highway my aunt's place in that town is on when I am driving from my place to hers... which I do about once a decade. Also, I realized the picture in my head at the time was actually of the waterfront in a completely different town (same side off the highway), but I didn't see the need to complicate matters further. Following a very long, difficult labor with my first baby I hemorrhaged and passed out. The doc woke me up in the OR to explain the emergency procedure she needed to do. I reportedly told her if she didn't knock me out I was going to climb off the table (with my 60/40 blood pressure, sure) and punch her, because I had put up with enough for one day.

My mom asked to apply for a job after having anesthesia she was like "I wanna work here everybody is so nice, I love it here" The doctor knew she was a nurse he told them to go ahead and give her an application that she's a good nurse. She got a call for an interview and turned it down. 😂

I want to tell you how I woke up from anesthesia for my last surgery. (Cw:medical gaslighting&its result) Before the surgery, I told them I have an issue. That's why they need to do certain things. They (whole team) said "oh okay, don't worry" they probably thought I said those things because they thought I am nervous about anesthesia. They did not listen. I woke up screaming in pain because they did not listen. Even one person had to massage to ease the pain, the other gave me morphine. That was a bad anesthesia wake up moment.

I'm sorry they didn't listen to you but hopefully they've started to listen to others because of you. My son had cerebral palsy & when he was 10 he had to have surgery. I had instinctively knew that anesthesia was going to be dangerous for him. Something had told me that while he was a small baby. I told the anestesiologist my deep concerns but he just poo pood me. Well, my son never fully woke up from the anesthesia & was in a coma for a week. When I ran into the anestesiologist he sat down with me, apologized for not taking me more seriously & cried for 10 minutes, continually saying how sorry he was. I'm sure that he never took a mom's concerns lightly ever again. I'm sure they learned from your case as well. I want to add that there's nothing worse than waking up from anesthesia in pain from a condition you already have & are unable to even move around to try to lessen it. I hope your next experience is much better.
