I've done questionable things in a Cessna. Then later on in life, I did actual aerobatics with an instructor in a plane certified for it (A Super Decathlon). One thing I learned is that you NEVER do aerobatic manoevers the aircraft is not certified for. You always stay within the prescribed limits. You migt pull off some crazy shit the aircraft is not certified for, but by doing so you are introducing stress to the structure. You might pull it off, but it may end up killing somebody else flying the planes months later. Fatigue cracks. You've seen the video of the Herk water bomber and the wings folding like cardboard because the spar failed? That is fatigue cracks, and while the Herk was within limits when it folded like a lawn chair, it had been abused by somebody else before who got away with it.

The barrel roll is one of the most misunderstood maneuvers. They attempted an aileron roll and not a barrel roll. A barrel roll is a loop combined with a roll. An aileron roll is a roll on a heading. But with that said, these guys did neither. They dished out of the roll so bad it turned into a split s which could have easily killed them in that Cessna.
@loopbackish

Indeed, they lost too much speed in the pitch up before rolling, and fell through. Then to make it worse they didn't do the correct upset recovery by rolling the wings level but pulled through. They are lucky they were so high. I've known people nearly killed by pulling through the inverted.

These Aircraft are NOT!! certified to carry out Aerobatics for a reason as a former Cessna Technical Representative for Europe and also knowing what legal problems Cessna has had to deal with in its past as did Piper, because Idiots do stupid things with the Aircraft and end up Killing themselves. The sad thing is that this person is totally unware of the Stress loading that the aircraft has been put under with No Accelerometer fitted. So looking at the video this aircraft was taken to VNE Plus the Engine has not got a fully aerobatic oil system it sounds like it was also being over loaded because the Power was not managed during the manoeuvre but The pilot thinks he is cool and Top Gun because he does not report this Aerobatic event to anyone and it isn't enter in the Tech Log No One is aware of what has gone on So now we come to the Genuine PPL Pilot with His/Her Family who take the Aircraft for weekend trip and are fully loaded to the Correct loadings but at maximum aircraft take off weight MATOW they get airborne and enter turbulence and the Wing separates from the Aircraft due to the Wing being over stressed and damaged and the Genuine PPL and family die in the crash This type of Flying with out Proper instruction and More so the Proper Aircraft the results are devastating. As an engineer who came from the Military into the Civil aviation world and who has seen over stress damage first hand I strongly advise anyone who has done this to an aircraft to report it and allow the Engineers to inspect it and For those of you who do this type of self taught Aerobatic flying I would love to take you to a Crash site and see the result of what you have caused and the Human loss this can cause. The Aircraft are Designed and Tested to Limits for reason and The team at Cessna who take these aircraft to the limits are very qualified professional Test Pilots with thousands of hours of Flying and Testing aircraft behind them they also have all the safety equipment and back up during the Flight Test Program and then the aircraft are taken apart and look at under a microscope to find stress fatigue. If you know of anyone who does this report them and if it is a School aircraft or a Rental report it to their Maintenance people and those that do this STOP NOW YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING

Didn't pull any noticeable Gs, positive or negative, and I was watching out the plane and don't know how much throttle manipulation he was doing, but he certainly didn't start to over rev the engine as you can with this less experience pilot. His Coke can never moved and after he completed the maneuver he reach up, got and finished drinking it. I bet you picked up a lot of speed at the end of this. By the time you were inverted, you were already at a 45 deg nose down attitude. Next time after you get your speed up in a shallow dive, which I saw you do, quickly lifting the nose up high, like 45 degrees above the horizon, before starting your roll. When you are inverted, the nose should still be above the horizon. You will finish the roll nose down but not nearly so much. Your speed should stay within the green.

Don't do this in a 172. Just pay for some aerobatic lessons in an aerobatic plane.

This was a bit scary to watch, because the pilot didn't know what he/she was doing but, that said, one can safely do a barrel roll, or aileron roll, in a typical small plane. This roll appears to have been done with too much constant positive g, which resulted in an excessive nose down attitude, which resulted in excessive speed and an unnecessarily hard pull.

Well. You lived through that. You should have a Maintance facility inspect that airplane for possible over stressed indications. But you will not. The airplane is probably a rental/ flight school airplane. If you told them what you did they would never allow you to rent from them, ever again. As well has make who ever was PIC, pay for that inspection and any damages caused be your reckless stunt. They would probably would have turned your name and pilots license to the local FSDO for an investigation on this incident. .. You just filled out the log sheet, payed the facility for the time on the Hobbs meter. Then went on your marry way, and left the airplane to be rented by some innocent pilot that scheduled the airplane after you. Let’s all just hope you guys didn’t damage the airplane or engine. Because the engine doesn’t have an inverted oil sump. That didn’t even pop in your heads when you pulled this maneuver. However you did record it. Then you posted it on KZitem, brilliant.

Gee mate, that was crazy alright, but not a barrel roll. During the recovery from the dive the sound was indicative of over speed. I hope you had that aircraft checked over for stress.

was really expecting a stall because of gravity fed fuel pumps tbh
@lone5463

Did you mean gravity feed system? Because fuel pump can't be gravity fed. It's a pump. It pumps with or against gravity. In Cessna 172 it even compensates for the gravity fed system when the aircraft is flying inverted like shown.

I think you should go out and try that again. But wear a parachute like Trevor did, because you may actually need it, when you pull the wings off. At least your video will be a real crash video.

That is a split s I do believe . I admire your tenacity here but the 172 was never meant for that kind of flying . You should go to something with more power and a variable pitch prop . This is one notch for your log book though . I have a buddy who taught ground school and CFI’d to build up hours . He rolled a Cessna and bent the wing pretty bad , he also had an incident where he had to land on a freeway. Good pilot but he’s asking for it.

Private Pilot here. He waited too long after initiating the climb to begin the roll, so there wasn't enough speed to complete it. Only reason this was a fail. The Cessna's engine is gravity fed its fuel, so the reason the engine started to go was because of slightly neg G while inverted. This can also happen when pushing to or past level too quickly after a steep climb. Not a huge deal. The extra G load while pulling out of this was the worst part (edit: esp considering the weight of those big brass ballz) but not more than the plane can handle. Plus, he had plenty of altitude to recover, which I'm sure was intentional. Novice aerobatics rule #1 if you don't know anything else: start with altitude. Nice attempt, if a little sloppy.

Man from inverted to finish you had way too much nose down attitude! That leads to overspeed and to much G at the pull up! Most aileron rolls are best started with a quick pull up and then roll.

That wasn’t a roll, it was the typical split S that results in an attempt by someone who doesn’t know how to fly aerobatics. Get some training and don’t do it in an airplane not certified for it!

Nice video. That wasn't a barrel roll, it was a sloppy aileron roll. An aileron roll involves 360 of roll. A barrel roll involves the same roll but significant pitch excursions. BTW- next time your buddy attempts an aileron roll make sure he has plenty of smash (speed), brings the nose up to 15 degrees up, unloads to half a G for better roll response and not get dished out nose low as he did.

What a stupid thing to do, even if you know what your doing, and you didn’t. They should do you and your family a favor and take your license , until you show more common sense. IF this is a rental and some other pilot flies into turbulence you might just end up killing them.
