Happy new year! This January, I’m kicking off the year with 31 paintings - one per day for the whole month!
This series is an opportunity to demonstrate many of the incredible techniques you can use in fluid art - great for beginners and experienced painters alike.
Today I’m doing a Swipe and then using an unconventional way to create cells: dish soap and water! The paints get swiped over each other and then drops of soapy water disrupt the surface tension of the paint, causing the colors underneath to show through. Although it isn’t as predictable as using silicone for cells, the soapy water makes a really unique cell shape! Soapy water also works really well when spritzed/sprayed over top of a swipe! My paints are all mixed with floetrol (~2:1 floetrol to paint) and thinned with water. This technique does require some cleaning before varnishing, to wash off residual soap.
Turquoise (Blickrylic)
Primary Yellow (Blickrylic)
Purple Pansy (Apple Barrel)
Metallic Magenta (Blick Studio Acrylics)
White (semigloss house paint)
The soapy water is about 1 part dish soap (any brand should work) to 2 parts water. You can adjust the ratio if you don’t get the results you want!
