If JP's point is that winning medals shouldn't be a deciding factor of why players should be at certain clubs then he has a point (i.e. Shearer staying at hometown club Newcastle and becoming on the best strikers in the Prem, or moving to Man United to win countless titles). But saying medals don't mean anything in football is just wrong. Many players might be happy with their careers even though they haven't won something but if they had the chance to add a trophy to their career they would say yes.

Pretty ignorant statement about medals. Believe it or not football is big business. The more trophies you win the more revenue a club receives, the more chance to buy good football players, the more fans worldwide who buy Tottenham shirts and paraphernalia which generates more money for the club, the more chance to get worldwide well-known sponsors with deep pockets to fund the club through the duration of the contract agreement years. Here in England we find that ... 13 clubs in the PL have foreign owners ... 4 clubs purely English owners and ... 3 clubs jointly owned by English and foreign owners. These owners invest in their clubs for a reason - to get a return on their investment and to make profit. No trophies means less fans, less money in the coffers and less to spend. And revenue is generated by shirt sales (the bigger the marquee name player the more the shirt sales); the selling of paraphernalia like mugs, scarfs, banners etc; match day income from people paying on match day besides those who buy season tickets; pay tv subscriptions; and a large portion is from well-known company sponsorships as described above. The more trophies you win the more popular Tottenham becomes to worldwide audiences who buy shirts; loads of paraphernalia; subscribe to pay tv; and attract big companies with deep pockets who want to become sponsors. This stream of revenue allows Tottenham to buy marquee name players, grow and expand their marketing & sales efforts (in china, india, indonesia, usa, brazil, australia - some of the most populous countries in the world), sell more club shares to the public, and invest in ventures that gain profit etc. So ask yourself who else can give you a proven track record of getting trophies consistently? Because football is big business and if you look at all the world team sports i.e. baseball, basketball, American football, ice hockey etc there is one thing you start to realize ... Big Clubs Spend Big Money to Stay Big!!! PS. If I'm not mistaken Tottenham has the 13th largest fan base in the world. And, according to Forbes is the 10th most valuable football club. But Tottenham is still far behind the big clubs like Real Madrid, Man City, Barcelona, Man United, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Liverpool and even Arsenal amongst others.

I know what the caller is trying to say he just couldn’t express his point the way he wanted ..v tough when you’ve that mouthpiece of a presenter cutting him down every 2 secs🙄!..maybe to try to explore his point ?...majority of footballers want to win trophies as their main goal but sometimes it isn’t all about ‘winning’ as the caller is trying to say some players might turn down the chance to win trophies. players like Totti turned down real , Shearer Utd , and LeTissier who turned down , Liverpool etc.. where he would have had a better CHANCE to win trophies , there is no guarantee Kane would win trophies if he moved to city as only one team can win,.. maybe he mightn’t move for personal reasons settled in London etc, so everything isn’t about winning, some players at lower league teams (with no chance of winning trophies) may stay there as they are settled in the area , make a good living or for any other no of reasons
@amasim86

I'm sure if you asked Gerrard if he moved to Chelsea and won the Premier league with them would it feel as special as winning an Fa Cup with Liverpool and being a legend for that club. Ask any Liverpool fan if Owen is regarded as a legend for them. You don't always have to win trophies to have a fulfilling career. Just nice if you can pick some up along the way.

Basically the caller was saying it isn’t a given that if Harry Kane did move clubs he’d win a trophy for example at man city which is true. But by staying at Tottenham he could be loyal to his club and potentially in time win a trophy which is also true. And in some aspects winning a trophy isn’t everything. He might go to Man City win a lot of trophies but only gets subbed on to play now and again.

Football is a sport with athletes. Look at other sports. In the olympics there are only three medals. Millions of athletes never get any medal. There is a reasol for that. Medals mean something but not everything. Shaquiri won two champions league de bruyne 0. Football is not all about winning trophies.
@gonnaw1n

He didn't start it off on the right foot but I have had the same argument with other people who say only those who win things playing football can be considered greats...ie Shearer isn't in the same league as those from Arsenal, Man U etc etc...I argued that so many greats have never won anything but doesn't mean they aren't great, merely were loyal to their clubs or other teams didn't know how to fit them in. Le Tiss is another great example, for Southampton he will always be an all time great but no other club really saw him fitting in their systems. Medals shouldn't represent how good a player was he should have said...it is more based on the memories that player gives the supporters.

To be fair no one starts playing football to win anything you start because you enjoy kicking a ball, then you start to enjoy watching it and then follow a team so you want to play in a team. The want to win comes when you get realisation that you can win. Every player wants to win but not everyone can. When you are a very good player it then becomes a matter of your love of the team with your chance of winning weighed up against your desire to improve your chance of winning
