What an fantastic story and so much information on birth control. Great way to call it “A Love Story”. ❤ I can so relate to so much on this story and we are still learning on this very subject. We too so love our girls. Our story began when my wife said we are getting chickens. She does daycare and thought what a great idea to get a few chicks which the kids could learn and help with. We started with four and ten days later got four more. We didn’t know a whole lot but learned as we went. We have been pretty fortunate over the years. We call them our original 8 and have four of them still. They turned 5-years old last November. Those 8 were 3-Barred Rocks, 3-Americaunas, 1-Buff Orpington and 1-Rhode Island Red. Last April one of our Americana’s (Missy) started laying soft shell eggs and a month or so later the shell didn’t go all the way through the track. We took her to a vet a she was able to flush it out as it was near the end. Our food was always the same as well as plenty of supplements. Around this same time frame she was laying small lash eggs. Then another Americana started doing the same (Gracie). Ironically both girls laid soft shell eggs that didn’t pass and the vet was able to flush the shells out. She told us about the birth control implant and we had her do Missy. To date we have implanted her three times cause of course they don’t last forever. Gracie’s lash eggs got bad and we implanted her but two months later. She ended up were we had to put her down. So devastating as she did almost everything with my wife. We kick ourselves to this day saying why didn’t we do both girls the same time to begin with. Both girls laid eggs all the time and they were over 4-years old when that started. So to your point, yes I agree the constant egg laying and at that age do these poor hens in. Missy is still here and doing well. You mentioned internally laying. Around the same time one of our Barred Rocks was squatting but stopped on a dime on not laying (Twilight). Vet X-ray her and the was an unknown mass in her. My wife kept saying she thought she was laying internally. We decided to implant Twilight. She stopped squatting and is doing better. The mass is still there but at her age we will stay the course. I know I’m writing allot but I am glad I saw your video on this. Yes this laying without a break except during molting takes it’s toll. I wish we knew about the implants sooner. As your story ended you had you babies at one day old. We too started at one day old. They are everything to us. They depend on you and the gratification is beyond words as you well know. ❤❤❤❤. May touch base with you more on this. Thanks for listening 😊. So sorry on the loss of your girls in your story

I have 2 Isa Browns and they lay the most beautiful eggs and some days...quite large! I didn't know this about the reds...I will keep watch to see if they molt in the cold months...they lay almost everyday, granted they are only 6 months old...we have 5 original girls which we treat like our kids and they love us in return...we built an indoor coop in our barn and then another coop outside for the new kiddos - they get special treatment, we let them get away with more than the others...I never knew how much you fall in love with your chickens, until you do. I lost one of my girls a few weeks ago and cried so hard...it never gets easy.

I got my 6 hen & 1 rooster from a not so great living situation at 6 and 7 weeks old. Built them a 8x32 open air coop /run. I live in Fl. I realized they were not sleeping back in coop so we build a hard wire cloth gate so I could put them back there before dark. WELL they were chirruping and caring on so and were not happy it was so up setting for me to see this . I brought out little battery candle light to put back in coop for them had to place the up on roost and talk to them. (As it got darker the did settle down thank goodness) I only have had them for 2 weeks and they are my babies and I love them so much. My sister has chicken and one of her hens is acting like yours sending her this video. Really we are ALL crazy chicken lady's. Sis calls us THE MOTHER CLUCKER CLUB.

I havent even watxhed more than a few seconds but immediately knew this was going to resonate with me. We just recently lost my Moxie because my hen ended up with this exact same thing. She was an Isa Brown/RIR mix. We wnt through having a house chicken for a few months, syringe feeding, meds and all trying to help. She had Egg Yolk Periontitis once and recovered amazing once and was back to her normal self and everthing seemed great. She eventually started showing similar signs again and we tried the treatments again hopeful to have caught it in time. But she just couldnt oull through and we ultimately had to let her go. Our vet said surgery was too risky and they don't even do it and NO ONE knows anything about the implant and thought I was insane for mentioning it. 😅 We have two more of this breed and I'm worried it may happen to them in the future :(

So glad I watched your videos and took your course. My three barred rock 5 week old chicks snuggle up on my lap for a rest while we are outside together. This is my second batch, even more spoiled that the first two originals. My two yr old barred rock laid a couple 1/4 pound eggs about a month into her laying. She hasn’t laid one since although pretends to every morning. She is healthy and happy. My two year old red rock lays every day without fail. NowI am worried due to this video. She never properly molted but has been licking out the feathers on her neck. Love them a lot, worry comes with it.

I love Barred Rocks too - one of my favorite breeds. :) Hopefully your Red Rock will molt this upcoming fall and take a break from laying. There's always risks involved with these laying hens, but some still do live long lives. Fingers crossed your girl will be one of them.

These are all the very reasons that I did NOT get any ISA Brown/Golden Comet/Amberlink/Red or Black Sex Links, etc this year when I got chicks. And because I have read that their lives are cut short from the toll being such a high producer takes on their bodies.

What a beautiful story. I’m not good at letting my pets go either so I’d probably do the same 😆 I’m only a new chicken mama… so I haven’t had to deal with the things you have experienced yet… but I don’t have any prolific layers either… I’ve felt drawn to only keep heritage breeds so I don’t think the issues discussed within this video will apply, but still very good to learn and I was considering getting some Isa browns, just for more consistency with egg production, however… I may reconsider

🤷♀️ I've got a baby chick (4 wks old) with a bent beak. At this age, so far both top & bottom beak are aligned, not scissor or cross beak. I've been imprinting these chicks from literally as soon as we picked them up (2 hrs away from our home). Eye contact 4 x daily with each one, holding them, etc... and about 2 weeks ago I noticed the area above her eye looked possibly scratched or injured, but I couldn't see anything for me to help heal. Slowly her face was developing crooked. As the other chicks are energetic when they're jumping on my legs or arms, she's still wanting to just be held & fall asleep on me, like they did for that first week. She's eating & everything else as normal other then she meets me every chance she gets, hops up on me to quickly relax & sleep. I also noticed she had poop & paper bedding stuck pretty bad on 1 foot, and realized she can't pick it off. I made a mental to check that every time I go into the brooder building & bring a bowl of warm water & a wash cloth if she needs cleaning. Soooo with that, if she can thrive, and the bent beak doesn't interfere with her eating, I hoping to put her on a birth control, as I don't want to breed her bc of her bent beak. I thought, for my situation, perhaps putting that blue dye that's used for pecking red skin, on her often would keep the rooster from mating with her & also keep other hens from picking on her, as I'm expecting that to start happening. From what I've read that stuff also smells & tastes bad. 🤷♀️

@@thefeatherbraindone! Miss Silver Dove is jumping up and down. She’s a tiny bantam and her last 2 eggs were miserable. Last week, I was thinking she was not going to make it, put her inside the house, gave her the epsom salt bath, some vitamins and Thank God she was able to lay a soft shell egg. I don’t want to see her like that ever ever again. Hopefully the implant will keep her from laying.. now my daughter wants the same for the other 22 ladies 😅. For now, husband here authorized another 3 if I feel they need it. My 6y/o are pretty healthy, so maybe some other special ones. Thank you again!

I'm here looking for information about possible prolapse. I have a black austrolorp hen (named Senecio or Sneezy) that I currently put in the 2nd bathroom tub for slightly over 2 weeks now. My husband noticed her cloaca slightly protruding and pulsating as if she was trying to push something out. We bathed her every night in epsom bath and I gently pushed the bulge in with olive oiled finger. I also put honey on the bulge (either honey or sugar water was recommended, I thought honey was more natural and highly anti-septic). After doing that for 4 nights in a row, she finally was able to pass a normal size and consistency of poop and looked and behaved better too so I took her back to the flock but in a cage (a 4x6 hoop cage with dirt bottom) so she could still see and be seen the other chickens but protected from the roosters (2 of them) and not be exposed too much to sun so she didn't produce egg. I take her back in the bathroom in the evening when all other chickens go back to their coops. She was also losing a lot of feather before prolapse, from being roughed up by the roosters - from her head, to he wings and most of the torso feathers. This separation helped her recover - until today. When I picked her up this morning to bring her to the cage, I noticed a long, white, thin and noodle-like 'stuff' was hanging out of her cloaca. It's probably 8-10 inches long. It's wet and sticky. I gently tugged on it and it didn't break if it's just a mucus. I didn't want to try again for fear that it's her intestine. Otherwise her cloaca looks normal. What to do?

Im looking for land to do an off grid homestead. I was thinking about moving with chickens and how everything for them would have to be done when we make the move. Im looking in Missouri and live in Indiana so it wouldn't be where we could live in one place and drive daily to work on the new place. I don't mind and I plan on working on the house as we live (in a tent, RV) while building it. But I want a large coop and large, covered run ready for the move!!

@@kdavis450 Moving off grid is definitely more challenging with chickens. We have made the same realization - the chicken setup needs to come first. We are working on it now, but luckily for us, our off-grid site is only 30 minutes away. Your situation is much trickier!
