At 7:24, in less than 60 seconds, you explain the most basic of modular synth signal flow where others on YT spend a bloody eternity needlessly complicating what could have accomplished as simply and efficiently as you have done here. In the three minutes that follow, you go on to complete what is pretty much an entire primer on modular signal flow that will get anyone up and running with their first basic build. All in less than five minutes total. Brilliant!

I've found that if you want to reset the sequencer so that it runs through the set of pads in the right order, touch the first pad when your OUT 1 of Chipz lights up. In other words, every first beat of a 4/4 bar, Chipz will light up at the OUT 1 input. When you press a key on Cellz when that OUT 1 lights up, you're telling the sequencer "Here's where beat 1 should land." Don't know how much you've messed around with this since, but I hope this helps somebody.

I recently bought the Nifty bundle as my gateway to modular, and I enjoy it a lot. The case is fantastic and worth the money alone, never mind the fact that for what less than most bare cases cost, you have power, I/O, and modules to fool around with. Chipz sounds crunchy and noisy by design - that's the point (the manufacturer's site specifically states they're meant to sound like 8 bit game console audio fart sounds). Cellz is... weird, and it's taking me some time to get the hang of. They'd be great for noise or power electronics projects (I tend to listen to a lot of very noisy music myself). On the other hand, Cre8audio's Captain Big-O oscillator and Phil-Ter filter are awesome and sound really great. Much more "normal" synth sounds and function.

I would go for an effects module like the Frequency Central Stasis Leak or Happy Nerding FX to give it some reverb and delay - always fun. Otherwise you'd be looking at another oscillator, filter and VCA which gives you another voice to play with but quickly adds up.

Your guidance during this Cre8audio review was very educational - as always! For me, your approach is very informative and makes it easy to learn the subject from you. You are our Synth 'Guru'! Robin, you said you are running the scope software MOscilloscope, by Melda Productions. And we see you used your new Surface Pro 7, with 'poppy' color accessories! I agree that this case is better in black and it was easy for me to repaint! I also took someone’s advice to add a 'volume' knob for the output as the original signal was too 'hot'. Later I may add a second mod to form a 'stereo signal' out for direct use with headphones.

Try putting a pair of phase shifted sine waves into the two inputs of the cells. I used a doepfer 143-9 and the outcome was most unexpected but repeatably stable to the point where i ought to number them and write down the pattern.,The impact of using the lfo of the chips is causes by one being a 1/4 clock divide of the other out as its just one lfo . If you have a clock divider with other divisions you should be able to get different patterns of movement.

Nice Robin. Them modules dont seem the best but i think the cells one can be manipulated into being somewhat useful. Its a neat little kit and saves a few steps to building one similar. Although id rather put my own i/o and power in another case but the price would still be similar. I had narrowed my search down to this kit, captain big O, brains & behringer 1033 or a polivoks or get a roland se02 and moog mavis and save the eurorack adventure for another life. Mmmmm, still on the fence with this one, Robin. Like the case and the Cellz module. Not so sure about the Chipz. The Sine out looks very steppy and 'wavetable'-y, although I guess that's kind of the point? One addition I would make would be to add the Eurorack Essentials Switch module and route the two LFO's through that, so you can swap the inputs to the Cellz. That way you can change the direction of the sequence with the switch. That'd be kinda neat.

Apologies if this has been said before but if you want more info on how Cellz works it seems to be an exact copy of a deleted Twisted Electrons module called Cells (no z). I wonder if the chiptune is derived from their SID products. I bought one of these cases and it sounded a bit funny like it was tangled up inside and i later spotted i was a connector short and it turned out someone had skipped one in putting in the second module so i fixed that. Make sure you check. I transcribed the cr8 videos sort of into a manual for myself but one thing still puzzles me. As i see it midi messages on channel 3 must be duophonic as one cv is the lowest note and one the hightes. Fair enough but what does it do if it gets messages on 1,2 and 3 at the same time does it get confused.? I have not tried to see what it does. I do like this product btw and find it very good for my needs. Sam

I bought a nifty case and it was great for a few weeks but I found myself almost immediately having issues with it. The MIDI CV has a few issues (mainly not being able to change the CV/Pitch values), and the case has a constant buzz which I guess comes from it having a "cheap" power supply. Cellz has issues too, my first unit failed completely, the touch pads would no longer work (this was around a month after purchasing), I was sent a new one, which is great customer service, however this one has an issue where the CV values won't stay after setting them and moving to the next touch pad. They go ever so slightly out of tune when moving to the next one. Very frustrating. I'm now using it as a manual gate source as it's the only use I can find for it now and I cannot be bothered to go back to them and let me know that my replacement unit is also faulty.
@MoltenMusicTech
4 жыл бұрын
Well, i think I gave as honest appraisal of the modules as i can - great and not great. And what do you mean by "buzz"? Are you saying that any modules running in the case have distortion? I found Chips to be very noisy but it was noisy in any other case too. Whereas no other modules behaved that way in the case. The audio output tends to be a bit hot - maybe you're overloading it. Who knows. Sorry it gave you trouble.
@adamgunn2885

Molten Music Technology You certainly did and I agree with your appraisal. RE the buzz, it’s almost like digital noise that’s there constantly, not coming from the modules but from the output on the case. Un-patched the noise is still there. Could just be a one off on my case!

Does Cellz allow to use CV instead of triggers to "select" cell? I mean like cv 0-25% - cell 1, 25-50% - cell 2, 50-75% - cell 3, etc? With 2 cv's to control, you can do an x and y sort of cell selection, to store complex logical "if" parameters. I can see a lot of application for generative stuff.

Hi. Stumbled across this vid as an intro to cases. You showed perfectly what a great case it is for beginners. So much so that it's gonna be the first I get. When you pimped it up was a deal closer!!! Looks so good. What tool did you use to remove the CV/Gate/Audio housings though? They seem completely round to to me?

This is great for a total beginner on limited budget with no modular experience even though I went a more expensive route.

My nifty bundle came in today. I have been having loads of fun with with. Lately I have been having a ton of fun with MIDI. So of course I had to use the MIDI function on the case. So I fed the case a MIDI file and had Chipz playing my current favorite synth tune; Axel F. The MIDI note was controlling the CV which was patched in to the tune. So you got a constant drone and the pitch of the drone would change with the song. I need to make a video of that.

Some more things to add. Yea chipz is noisy and a bit crap. But the fact that the bundle comes with two modules to get you started is fantastic. For the price it's hard to complain. And I was able to make sounds that reminded me of an Atari 2600. So that's pretty cool. The case like you said is brilliant. My MIDI controller has pitch and mod wheels. I love that the case has a mod output. That was fun to play with with. So overall for a starter setup it's pretty brilliant. It gives me something to play around with until I can afford other modules. Since I already have an oscillator; my next module wil be something else. I may see about getting a filter to make chipz sound a bit less crap. All in all I am very happy with my purchase. It's been a ton of fun playing with this.

@@MoltenMusicTech I have been having loads of fun. I discovered that my DAW (Reaper) has a MIDI LFO plugin. So that's been fun to play with. The MIDI capabiliti8es of the case really allow you to get a lot more out of just those two modules.

Hi! I just got a NiftyCase and I'm unable to make it sound. Can you please explain how and what do you connect it to ? Thank you in advance

Hi - I made a video all about it - this one in fact. If you skip to the bit where I show you the waveforms I talk about how to connect it for sound - kzitem.info/news/bejne/lqyDu2qqfoqXZ2U If that's not working for you can you tell me exactly how you have connected it up, where your outputs are going to and how you are going to hear them?

I got a nifty Bundle used. What can I say, I'm Cheap. As I add yet more used fun to the rack I have discovered that my CHIPZ module is actually 13hp wide and not 12hp as advertised. I left a comment on the company FB page. Not really worried about it as I am already to the point of needing better VCOs and will be yanking the CHIPZ out of my rack as soon as the new ones arrive.
