Great video Brian, glad that see that you too were a fan of Karen Kenworthy, sad about her passing. I've checked out Robocopy, but it appears that is just a simple one folder or one location backup/copy tool. Love the command line interface, seems to be a lost art now days.

If any of these apply to you, the simple Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V combination probably won't cut it. And though Robocopy GUI certainly improves on that basic functionality, it still has some limitations in terms of granular control and usability.

I think this would be even better if you added a section on using the Task Scheduler to give an automatic backup of data defined by the Robocopy script file which is what I do. I also have a shortcut on my desktop to run the backup manually (if I've copied a lot of data - usually photos - to the PC drive) or automatically 15 minutes after logging on, just in case I forgot to do the manual backup. My set up: I also have two backup drives. A larger ALLDRIVE with every file that has ever been created (I put version numbers on my files) and a smaller MIRRORDRIVE that just has the current state of the directory but which purges deleted files. If I were to lose my PC/hard drive I would rebuild the directory with the MIRRORDRIVE but if I was missing any information from the past it is likely to be on ALLDRIVE - so long as it had been backed up frequently, which it would be with a script in the Task Scheduler. The ALLDRIVE is permanently connected to the PC via a hub and it will still be mounted as the backup task takes place 15 minutes after logging in. It may automatically dismount at a future time due to inactivity but that is not important. This drive is physically secure and, to a limited extent, protected by fire. The MIRRORDRIVE is physically removed from the PC and stored in a protected location and the Mirror backup is run manually about once a week. The scripts for each drive is kept on the drive itself. No drive, no script. Scripts: ALLDRIVE: Robocopy.exe C:\Directory G:\Directory *.* /E /V /R:1 /W:5 /LOG:G:\Directory_ALL.txt MIRRORDRIVE: Robocopy.exe C:\Directory D:\Directory /E /V /PURGE /R:1 /W:5 /LOG:D:\Directory_MIRROR.txt /E - Copy subdirectories, including empty ones /V - Produce verbose output, showing skipped files /PURGE - Delete destination files/directories that no longer exist in the source /R:1 - Number of retries on failed copies: default 1 million /W:5 - Wait time between retries: default is 30 seconds /LOG: - Output status to LOG file (overwrite existing log) Note: I tried the /MIR switch (Mirror a directory tree (equivalent to /E plus /PURGE)) but I was unable to make it work properly so I use /E /PURGE instead which is equivalent

Also. Don't forget to always add "/V" so it outputs on the console what robocopy is doing in real time for you to monitor. And "/log" should always be "/log+" in case you do multiple sources and paths so it gives you one log.

Awesome Brian. Thank you so much. I do remember playing with the plain copy command and making bat files with Xp years ago. This is so much better.

Thanks Brian, nice helpful video and Robocopy was on my list of things to check out. I have a couple of Xcopy scripts but might redo them in Robocopy. Love the command line love. I know you ask sometimes for requests and not sure this is for everyone but what about a few videos on Powershell ?.

Copying files is not always that simple. What if you're copying thousands of files across a slow connection? What happens if your network hiccups and interrupts the copy? What if you want to make sure that you preserve particular file attributes, such as a Last Modified date, but not other attributes, like security descriptors? What if you want to filter the files you're copying from source to destination based on filename or extension?

Great tutorial Brian. Keep up the good job! If I had to migrate the whole volumes/drives from one server to another, do I have to create the folders and shares first and then migrate files?

Great Video! Thanks man. I have a quick question, if I use /XO, does robocopy just check the filename, or it also checks the time. Say I edited a document today, I didn't change the filename, just the content, if I run the command the tomorrow, will robocopy also backup this file? Or is there some other switch I could use? Thanks a lot.

I know this comment is 5 years old but if anyone is trolling the comments section looking for answers, here we go. It will look at the timestamp or file size and make changes to the destination if the source has been changed.

i read that i can do it in two passes to prevent fragmentation by first using /CREATE to create the folders and zero length files. but when i test it out it doesn't seem to create subdirectories. any idea what i could do? i don't want to have to manually enter each subfolder

what's your experience with deleting the destination file if it no longer exists in the source? I've found that people sometimes need things that they have deleted from the source, and having them in the destination is actually good.

I'm using this line of code to copy my files to my skydrive mapped as S: robocopy (source) (destination) S XO PURGE FFT R:10 W:10 Z (cant use fwdslash) I want only new/updated files copied over... and robocopy is copying everything, if I omit S it will not copy anything, if I use MIR instead it will copy everything too. I have many files but some of these files are updated everyday I need to copy only the updated ones. What am I missing? or does it have to do with skydrive security settings?THNX

XxtrollsniperXx scheduled tasks can run batches in background, I do it with flexget all the time. you just create the task and tell it to run in the background.
