Hi @R HP. One of the points which we wished we’d mentioned in the tutorial and which only became apparent after publication is that it’s vital to allow Rufus to check for updates when offered. If this option is declined, Rufus will not offer the option to download .iso files directly from Microsoft, potentially requiring us to source them separately. This setting can be re-enabled by heading to the Settings icon (which is the third blue icon from the left of the bottom of the main interface, and looks like three horizontal sliders in various positions). From the dialog box which appears, set the “Check for updates” drop-down to “Daily (Default)” then click on “Check Now.” Once the check is performed, exit and restart Rufus. Upon restart, you should now have an extra option to “Download” accessible via the “Select” dropdown.

I have a braswell dual core laptop with 4GB ram and 32GB emmc. I made an installer using Rufus similar to this. Installed Windows 11 on my laptop. After a couple of days, I understood why MS had to make a minimum requirements for it. It's like installing Android 12 on an Android KitKat device.
@TechFixFlix

Hi @Lawrence Patricio, and sorry to hear your installation isn’t performing as expected. This doesn’t match our experience of Windows 11 on unsupported hardware, and anecdotally we’d suggest that Windows 11 performs identically to Windows 10 running on the same hardware. It might be that something specific to your device is causing the slowdown, but certainly we haven’t seen a marked performance drop-off on any of our test machines.
@lawrencepatricio5776

@@TechFixFlix installation went perfectly smooth. First boot went as expected. My system became sluggish when everything was setup and Windows, Defender, apps started making all those updates. And not to mention onedrive. My 32GB emmc started filling out. And my dual core was almost always at 100%. Don't get me wrong, the installation instructions in the video was perfect in bypassing the installation requirements. It's just that my system wasn't quite up to the challenges of running a full blown Windows 11 OS. So I went out searching for alternatives. I found a lite version of windows 11. No bloatware, no telemetry and I installed it purely as a local account. I took out Defender and just installed free Avast. The installation size was just about 3GB. Ram at boot was less than 1GB used. And everything was smooth and perfect. Enjoying it much. So, lesson learned, if you take away bloatware, telemetry and all the services that I don't need like onedrive etc, Windows 11 is a lean and mean os that my low spec laptop easily run. Really happy now. Thanks.

Okay after searching around I found a way that it will install on any computer and in any way you want to install it. You need to get both iso files online. One for windows 10 and one for windows 11. You then edit the windows ten file with a file you extract from the windows 11 iso. You delete install.esd file from the windows ten iso then copy in the install.mib file from the windows 11 iso to the win 10 iso. You then use the win 10 iso to do the install for you. It will say that it is installing windows 10 but it will be really installing the windows 11 install file to your machine and it will never check for any unsupported hardware at all. This works perfect for either a new full install or an upgrade install so you can keep all your current files from win 10. This is the sneaky way of doing it but it works flawlessly.
@TechFixFlix
2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely @Inky Doggy. This method essentially piggybacks upon the Windows 10 installer to deliver a Windows 11 payload. It’s sneaky, and we like it. If you’ve reached the point of deploying these tactics, you really are showing the kind of determination which should be applauded, and which also brings into question why Microsoft introduces restrictions at all.

@TechFixFlix
2 жыл бұрын
@spillsndebris If your device has previously run a recent version of Windows, there will be a digital license associated with the hardware profile of your machine, and this license will remain valid whether you update or perform a clean installation. This might appear as though each device has the same license key, but it's the pre-exisitng license associated with the hardware profile which is significant, so you shouldn't experience any licensing issues in this scenario.

Hi @Paul Naylor. At the time of this reply, both of these problems can be resolved. The watermark which Microsoft have applied can be removed using a very straightforward amendment to the Windows registry, and we’ll be covering this in a future video here, together with a written outline at TechFixFlix.com. You don’t need to wait for our article, as there are certainly others online which cover the same topic. You are correct that Microsoft have hinted that users of “unsupported” machines will not be entitled to updates, but, in reality, thus far updates are provided to supported and unsupported machines equally. We’ve written a fuller outline of our position on this topic at: www.techfixflix.com/2022/01/updating-windows-11-on-unsupported-systems.html and we take the view that, on balance, upgrading an unsupported machine is still very much a viable proposition. My question is why use win11 when there are so many Linux options available? Mint is a great OS. Lots of free software, and likely would run faster and better on an older PC. I have been using Mint for about 10 years now. You can even run many windows programs on Linux. No issues with viruses. Windows may choose to force some subscription fees and lock your system, like they did with the office tools. There are compatible free office tools for Linux.
@TechFixFlix
Жыл бұрын
That’s a perfectly reasonable question @Paul Smith, and we’re proudly platform-agnostic on this channel, taking the view that being proficient in multiple operating systems greatly enhances our overall experience of and comfort in our interactions with technology, which is why our channel has purposefully featured Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and Linux. We’ve examined three specific Linux distros thus far, most recently elementary OS, before that LinuxFX and earlier still we looked at Ubuntu, so we’ve certainly given Linux some love over the years. Our argument in favour of Windows stems from its ubiquity. It runs on an estimated 75 per cent of the world’s desktop computers, with macOS taking up another 15 per cent, with Linux gaining just under 2.5 per cent. So it’s not unreasonable to claim that everybody uses Windows, and especially in business, with the consequence that the breadth of hardware and software compatibility is far wider than found on any other platform. As an aside, we were more than happily using Acorn computers in the early part of the nineties, but jumped to Windows when it became increasingly clear that “everyone else was using Windows,” resulting in Windows always attracting greater quantities of hardware and software at competitive price points. Just because everyone else is doing something doesn’t always make for a compelling argument, and we’re still hugely nostalgic for those Acorn days, but there’s a realisation that we need to keep pace with advances in technology, and sometimes there’s safety in following the pack. In many ways, this is still the case. There are many things which macOS does incredibly well, and you make a compelling argument for Linux…it’s just that Windows offers the best toys. None of that invalidates your question, or the rationale behind it. If you appreciate Linux, and can make it work for you, that’s absolutely great. The larger the user base Linux can attract, the stronger that platform will become. It’s not especially difficult to learn, and provides a strong counter in some of the areas in which Windows is weakest. As you mention, Microsoft are leaning ever more closely toward subscription based models for their services. We’ve always shunned this approach in favour of one-off payments or, better yet, entirely free options. Should this trend continue, we will join you in jumping ship.

So I wouldn't recommend installing it that way. It's not called unsupported for nothing. But I recommend installing a virtual machine first and testing it in win 10 and 11 and new drivers. But you can also work in all systems in win 10 as vm install with arm and arm 64 versions. My tip, because it says virtual machines are too slow to set the mouse pointer speed in win 10 and win 11 vm to 100 percent and a create manual virtual swap file in win 10 and in win 11 vm. also adjust the auto start apps in both and uninstall unnecessary programs. Adjust the PC for optimal performance. in win 10 and in the vm win 11. Some things are well explained in Tube if you can't find them. Defragment and optimize and delete all old drivers and win updates. I booted dual core processor with win 10 8 years ago from 2007 in 19 sec

Hi @SM orphin. We’re huge advocates of virtual machines, and we’re particularly fond of VirtualBox, which is a very capable free option. Indeed, we’ve published an entire playlist on this topic, which you’ll find at kzitem.info/door/PL-rpUX02j1W4ipcWeg-5XjmFQgyrvTJQ- in which we run Windows, macOS, Android and Linux in virtual environments. As you note, this is an ideal testing ground for trying out new operating systems in a safe environment which will prevent damage to your main P.C. Whether you’re using a virtual machine or running on bare hardware, we’ve also discussed optimising performance in a number of our videos. From the topics you’ve referenced, we looked at auto startup apps in our video “Speed Up Your Windows Startup” found at kzitem.info/news/bejne/zn2QvpN3rX91iZg and we took this to the extreme in “Clean Boot Windows” located at kzitem.info/news/bejne/pX1ovZt9i4qKdYo. We also eliminated some of the bloat from our system in “Remove Windows Bloatware With Bloatbox” at kzitem.info/news/bejne/koiEr46VqoiCm5w. We covered freeing up drive space in “Free Up Drive Space In Windows 10” at kzitem.info/news/bejne/1YuX1XmcfpGkl6g and updated drivers which Windows Update didn’t always identify in “Driver Booster - Automatically Update Your Windows Drivers” found at kzitem.info/news/bejne/w4Z9x6VuooN_aW0 in addition to the more general update strategy outlined in “Update Every Device - Updating Windows, macOS, iOS And Android” (see kzitem.info/news/bejne/k7B534lup5x7qqA). However, we can’t operate in a virtual environment forever, with the clock slowing ticking toward sunset for Windows 10. Of course, there’s no need for immediate panic, with the retirement date scheduled for October 14th 2025, and therefore still two-and-a-half years away at the time of this reply, and any user who is content with Windows 10 can happily keep using it without concern until that date. From our experience it appears that almost any machine capable of running Windows 10 can successfully run Windows 11. We don’t place great weight upon Microsoft’s categorisation of “unsupported systems,” which rules-out a significant portion of the world’s machines, with tremendous economic and environmental consequences which we’ve discussed at length in other comments for this video. We would certainly encourage anyone considering jumping from a virtual environment to their main hardware (or indeed anyone jumping straight in) to do so with relatively little fear, particularly if they follow our advice and create a full system image of their existing installation before proceeding, as discussed in our video “Preparing For Windows 11 - Creating A Full System Image” at kzitem.info/news/bejne/r4efsWikmJF5iaw.

Hi @earthgrinder1, and sorry to hear this isn’t working for you. In relation to your second point, please be aware that, unless you make special provision, Windows 11 will replace Windows 10 on any system upon which it is installed. The only instances where this would not be the case would be where you have configured your machine to dual boot, allowing you to select which operatibng system to boot from, or you have installed Windows 11 as a virtual machine running in a virtualised environment. Unless you have specifically created one of these environments, Windows 11 will be installed over the top pf Windows 10, which you will no longer be able to access. There is an option to roll back from Windows 11 to Windows 10 within the first ten days of upgrading, although, for a longer-lasting solution, we specifically discuss creating a system image of your existing Windows 10 installation in this video: kzitem.info/news/bejne/r4efsWikmJF5iaw You didn’t mention why it wouldn’t load on your desktop, but, assuming you’re looking to perform an in-line update, it should be a case of simply mounting the U.S.B. drive, then running the Setup utility from the mounted stick. Hi @Inky Doggy.The first question we’d ask is whether you’ve set your P.C.’s B.I.O.S. to boot first from the U.S.B. stick, because it may be defaulting to the main system drive, and, if that drive is blank, nothing will happen. So do confirm that your machine sets the U.S.B. stick as the first boot device. Other than that, do check the U.S.B. stick itself to make sure that the installation files have successfully copied. This shouldn’t be an issue, but worth considering just in case.

Hi @directmusictv. You’re the second person to pose this question in the last ten days, so we’ve taken a little time to look into it. We’re wondering whether there might be a bug in version 3.19, which is the latest version available via rufus.ie. We have been able to replicate the issue you’re experiencing using Rufus 3.19.1911 Portable, and, in our testing, we were not offered the installation option for unsupported systems. Hopefully, this will be fixed in future releases. As an interim workaround, take a look at rufus.ie/downloads/ which is an archive of previous versions of Rufus. We know that version 3.17 works as shown in our video, having tested it today, so we’d recommend downloading the portable version at github.com/pbatard/rufus/releases/download/v3.17/rufus-3.17p.exe and avoid the temptation to update to 3.19 when offered at startup. We’ve always maintained that this is the single most important question relating to this project, so much so that we specifically addressed it in this article: www.techfixflix.com/2022/01/updating-windows-11-on-unsupported-systems.html In short, the news is good, in that whilst Microsoft have reserved the right to withhold updates, they have yet to do so, and almost fourteen months after its release, we can still update an unsupported machine in exactly the same way we would a supported device, through Windows Update. If Microsoft are planning to withhold updates, they are being incredibly slow about it.

Thank you for your kind words about the tutorial, and there’s some good news here @Gary Price, in that whilst Rufus 3.20 introduced changes to user interface, the functionality shown in our video remains present, but is now accessed via a different route, and the key is to click the “Start” button in the lower part of the main window, at which point you will be offered the customisation options which were previously accessible as shown in our video. Alternatively, if you’d like to follow the process exactly as shown in our video, you can still obtain version 3.17 from the Rufus archives, which you’ll find at rufus.ie/downloads/ Avoid the temptation to update to 3.20 when offered at startup.

Good content, but I'm confused. Why would anyone want to override the safeguards by MS and install an OS that will not be getting updates, isn't guaranteed to work, and has the potential of conflicting with programs over an OS that is working just fine, and getting all the updates and patches? If you're a computer nerd and want to do this for fun, OK. But for anyone else - why? I certainly wouldn't. The last thing I want is to have to deal with unexpected issues arising from doing this. Windows 11 has NOTHING that I need that Win10 doesn't have. So my question is why do this?
@TechFixFlix
Жыл бұрын
Hi @Spock's Brain, and thanks for your kind words about the content, as well as your thought-provoking question. So why should the average non-hobbyist consider taking such a risk to update a perfectly usable Windows 10 system? We’re not in the business of forcing a system update on anyone, and, if you’re happy with your existing Windows 10 setup, and if you view your P.C. as a productivity tool rather than something to be experimented with, that’s absolutely fine, and we won’t be applying any pressure to update against your will. Ultimately, it’s your P.C., you’ve paid for it, and you have the absolute right to use it in whatever way you see fit. We would point out that even an “unsupported” Windows 11 installation will continue to receive updates from Microsoft, and, whilst they have clearly reserved the right to stop providing updates should they so wish, the reality to date - and we’re now some eighteen months beyond the publication of our video - is that updates have been made available to unsupported machines on exactly the same schedule as officially supported devices. In terms of being guaranteed to work, we would suggest that any machine currently running Windows 10 will be able to run Windows 11, and we are yet to come across a machine which runs Windows 10 which fails to run Windows 11. Remaining with Windows 10 potentially presents two problems. The first is that it is likely to soon become a poor relation to Windows 11, as Microsoft ploughs its resources into its flagship Windows 11, whilst simply keeping Windows 10 ticking over for the remainder of its life-cycle. History would suggest that the next few years will see exciting feature development for Windows 11, whilst Windows 10 will be allowed to stagnate. The second issue is that Windows 10 will only be maintained for a further eighteen months, as support will officially end in October 2025. Whilst that seems a long way off, it does raise some of the very concerns you’re hoping to avoid by remaining on Windows 10, and your system will potentially be left without updates and patches in a year-and-a-half. By this point, Microsoft are effectively forcing us all to either update, or run the risk of using an unsupported device. Are the features of Windows 11 so compelling as to mandate this upgrade for the average user? We’re afraid we can’t make that argument. There’s very little practical difference between Windows 10 and Windows 11, and indeed we found it surprising that the bar to entry for Windows 11 is so high compared to Windows 10, when their feature sets are so similar, which provided the inspiration for the creation of our video in the first instance. There’s very little that’s truly new in the Windows 11 interface. In some features it represents a step backward - at least until those features are fully (re) implemented, and there’s nothing which Windows 11 can achieve which Windows 10 cannot. There’s nothing revelatory here, and, for those entirely content with Windows 10, there’s no pressing reason to update on the grounds of features alone. Prior to publishing our Windows 11 upgrade videos, we specifically focused upon creating a full system image backup (see our video on this topic at kzitem.info/news/bejne/r4efsWikmJF5iaw for details) and the purpose of this video was to preserve our existing Windows 10 installation to allow us to return to it in the event that either something went wrong, or we simply didn’t like Windows 11. For anyone who remains unconvinced yet curious, this provides a safety net by which you can run Windows 11 on your primary P.C., yet have the option to revert back to Windows 10 if you so wish.

Hi @Narendra Singh. Unfortunately the news here isn’t good. At the time of this reply, Windows 11 is incompatible with 32-bit systems, and it seems unlikely that Microsoft will ever release a 32-bit version. Whilst Rufus can negate the need for T.P.M., Secure Boot, and additional R.A.M., the one truly fundamental requirement for Windows 11 is that it can only run on a 64-bit system. Unless Microsoft reverse direction and release a 32-bit version, you can only upgrade as far as Windows 10.

Hi - Rufus does not recognize 1TB flash drive, now what 🙂do I do?
@TechFixFlix
Жыл бұрын
Hi there. As we mention in the video, this process erases the entire content of the drive, so first be absolutely certain that your 1 T.B. drive isn’t being used to store any vital files before using it, and that you really intend to use it for this purpose. We aren’t aware of any specific restrictions related to drive size, although we’d check whether the drive is appropriately formatted and partitioned, and can be straightforwardly accessed using File Explorer. Assuming this is the case, try clicking on the option to “show advanced drive properties” in the middle of Rufus’ main interface and tick “List USB Hard Drives” which may reveal your drive. Failing that, we’d suggest buying a comparatively small capacity U.S.B. stick. A capacity of around 8 G.B. should be sufficient, although capacitors that small are no longer typically offered, so you might need to purchase a 16 or 32 G.B. drive by default. Either way, these drives are incredibly inexpensive in the modern market, and would certainly cost far less than your 1 T.B. drive.

Hi @Kim R. Please accept our sincere apologies for the delay in responding to your comment. Hi @Ruben Sidranski. This is a topic which we regret not including in the original video…Once you physically insert the U.S.B. stick, options originally greyed out under “Target system” become available. The default is “UEFI (Non CSM)” but, if you change the “Partition Scheme” dropdown from the default “GPT” to the alternative “MBR,” the option under “Target system” will change to “BIOS (or UEFI-CSM),” and naturally this will be the appropriate configuration for your hardware setup.

@TechFixFlix
2 жыл бұрын
Hi @i Pancake, and thank you for your kind words about the video. You can use the stick in one of two ways: (1) If you’re looking to upgrade an existing Windows 7/8/10 installation, you can simply insert the stick and, as you’d correctly deduced, thereafter run the “Setup” file found in the root directory. (2) Alternatively, should you be looking to perform an entirely clean installation on a blank (or erased) hard drive, you’d need to temporarily set your computer's B.I.O.S. to use the stick as its primary boot drive. In this scenario, your computer will automatically detect and run the setup utility.

While I have OCD and always want my hardware to run the newest software it is important to note that Windows 10 is still perfectly viable, in both gaming and applications there isn´t really any huge advantage to installing Windows 11. Until 2025 Windows 10 will remain supported. Have tried the above method on two machines, only one of them offered a challenge in regard to Windows own security software, that was however fixable. As I do my work pro bono for elderly wishing to venture into the world of PCs and web browsing my usual methods are somewhat more foolproof. I just wish I could ban all porn sites with a single click, some elderly are oddly weird and infect their rigs with all kinds of crap ... but that´s off topic I guess :).

Hi @The Spark. We entirely share your O.C.D. when it comes to having the latest and greatest software on our devices, and we’ve broken many a computer by overly aggressive updating, which is why our videos always strongly advocate creating restore points and system images as a fallback. Your general point is absolutely valid, and where a user is happily enjoying Windows 10, there isn’t yet a truly compelling argument toward forcing Windows 11 upon them, and Windows 10 still performs entirely satisfactorily. Actually, this relative parity between Windows 10 and 11 makes the gulf in system requirements so alarming, and was a key motivation for us in creating this particular video, in which the essential premise is that where a machine is capable of running Windows 10, it’s surely also capable of running Windows 11. As for senior citizens and the unwanted consequences of their peculiar browsing habits…we’ll leave that good work to you…

Hi @Martin M and @All Tech content. This question has now been posed twice in the last ten days, so we’ve taken a little time to look into it. We’re wondering whether there might be a bug in version 3.19 of Rufus, which is the latest version available via rufus.ie. Hi @Graham Howes. There were two things which we wished we’d mentioned in the tutorial, both of which only became apparent after publication, and one of which might offer assistance to you. The first is that it’s vital to allow Rufus to check for updates when offered. Furthermore…and even more likely to be relevant to you…Once you physically insert the U.S.B. stick, options originally greyed out under “Target system” become available. The default is “UEFI (Non CSM)” but, if you change the “Partition Scheme” dropdown from the default “GPT” to the alternative “MBR,” the option under “Target system” will change to “BIOS (or UEFI-CSM),” and we think that this configuration might be the one which works on your particular hardware setup. Hopefully this will work for you, but do let us know if you’re still struggling.

Hi @Duane. This is quiet common when updating, and even more so when performing a clean installation. If you happen to know the manufacturer of your Bluetooth hardware, you might like to check the “Support” or “Downloads” section of their web site for an appropriate driver. If there isn’t a specific Windows 11 driver, you might be able to use the Windows 10 version instead. If you don’t know the manufacturer’s details, you could try Driver Booster, as demonstrated in our video “Driver Booster - Automatically Update Your Windows Drivers” found at kzitem.info/news/bejne/w4Z9x6VuooN_aW0 although this can sometimes lead to additional problems, so proceed with caution. To anyone reading this prior to updating their Windows installation, we’d always advocate backing up your existing drivers, as shown in our video “Backup Windows Hardware Drivers,” found at kzitem.info/news/bejne/k6aNyY6Vm3yloYY which will provide a starting point in situations like those described by @Duane.

Hi @Harold Campos, and congratulations on successfully updating four “officially unsupported” P.C.s to Windows 11. We’ve talked a lot in the comments about what we perceive to be an environmental scandal which hasn’t attracted much attention in the mainstream media, specifically the built-in obsolescence of modern equipment, where companies are artificially imposing a useable lifespan upon their devices, effectively forcing users to update and destroy perfectly good hardware in order to stay up-to-date. In this case, we’re talking about Microsoft and Windows, but this is equally an issue for macOS, iOS, Android and ChromeOS, each of which eventually outgrow their hardware, and, whilst technology will always advance, we’ve yet to hear a truly compelling argument as to why a machine capable of running Windows 10 is fundamentally incapable of running Windows 11. Could it be that we have grown so addicted to free Windows updates that Microsoft are trying to break the cycle by forcing us to purchase new hardware, and, by extension, a new Windows licence? These are tough times financially and environmentally, and on both grounds we’ll continue to champion the value of existing equipment.

@@TechFixFlix thanks so much for writing back, and for making a good point! I guess tech companies want their devices slated for the e-waste above all! I wish things were still built to last! I think they call it 'planned obsolescence'... but I've been systematically upgrading old machines lately for cheap! I've also been preparing to get some older 20" imacs (found one of them in the trash the other day! It was windows and domain locked to a school, but I unlocked local acct and deleted the domain 'users' folder lol) to install a 64bit version of windows to boot into off the 32bit efi bootloader, since the apple app store doesn't have any compatability downloads, you can only download the latest version of an app that sometimes used to work on your OS but was updated and then nothing seems to install to the machine, so some people are saying the most viable solution is to install windows!! The one I'm working on now which I also painted sparkle purple, will also get a t9600 cpu like my laptop! I know mac os uses some hw acceleration for the animations when you minimize windows etc. but windows just added rounded edges overlayed on top of windows 10, lol. I fully agree they make their money from 'oem' Software and need to sell machines, period. It seems all so petty to us but there's some suits in a board discussing just that very thing, as if their billions hinged on it! (In my case my favorite and most nostalgic pc game is from 2001 and the minimum system requirements are underwhelming, after picking it up again; I found that all my old computers were still waiting for me!) The crazy thing is when crazy inflations hit, and you have to buy old tech at a premium! I bought a 9" crt for $150 last month. A japanese ps2 for $120 last week! They were prime specimens, but still... This stuff easily goes for half that until people realize, holy crap this isn't trash.

Got in a bidding war on ebay for a dell laptop. One guy had six of them for $18... I decided I'll get a second. Well the guy bidding against me; they didn't want to wait til the last second, they just wanted to bid and bid and bid and buy them all and not let me have none. I thought it was a buy back operation. I bid them all up to $60 and bought none. It was one guy, too... he could have let me buy the first one. Then snatched them all up for $18 because I wouldn't have been bidding him. I didn't want the seller to get ripped off either with a insincere buyer and I was annoyed so I waged war and they paid as much as was necessary... no regard for budget.

Hi @Carson Reed. The latest version of Rufus (3.19) includes changes to the user interface, but the functionality remains present, and once you click “Start” you should be presented with customisation options, including: • Remove requirement for Secure Boot and TPM 2.0 • Remove requirement for 4GB+ RAM and 64GB+ disk • Disable data collection (Skip privacy questions) You can select one or more of these options from the popup which appears. Why bother to install win 11 on Microsoft so call unsupported device. Install Linux instead.

Hi @Chan Sam. We’re proudly platform-agnostic on this channel, taking the view that being proficient in multiple operating systems greatly enhances our overall experience of and comfort in our interactions with technology, which is why our channel has purposefully featured Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and Linux. We’ve examined three specific Linux distros thus far, most recently elementary OS, before that LinuxFX and earlier still we looked at Ubuntu, so we’ve certainly given Linux some love over the years. Our argument in favour of Windows stems from its ubiquity. It runs on an estimated 75 per cent of the world’s desktop computers, with macOS taking up another 15 per cent, and Linux gaining just under 2.5 per cent. So, it’s not unreasonable to claim that everybody uses Windows, and especially in business, with the consequence that the breadth of hardware and software compatibility is far wider than found on any other platform. There are many things which macOS does incredibly well, and there’s a compelling argument for Linux…it’s just that Windows offers the best toys. For many users, possibly even the vast majority, learning how to use an unfamiliar O.S. can be a daunting prospect, and experienced Windows users - and we’re specifically thinking about non-hobbyists who view computers as a tool of necessity utilised to accomplish specific goals rather than a toy to be explored and experimented with - might simply be uncomfortable with the learning curve presented by the jump to Linux. In many ways, these users are “trapped” within a Windows environment, and aren’t motivated to change their operating system. We suspect that there will be quite a large section of the general population who fall into this category, and for them this combination of familiarity and ubiquity will ensure they remain wedded to Windows and have no desire to jump to Linux, no matter how compelling a counterargument you may offer. If you appreciate Linux, and can make it work for you, that’s absolutely great. The larger the user base Linux can attract, the stronger that platform will become. It’s not especially difficult to learn, and provides a strong counter in some of the areas in which Windows is weakest.

Hi @Inky Doggy, and nice to hear from you again. The U.S.B. stick we create can be used either to upgrade an existing Windows setup, or to perform a clean installation on an entirely blank drive. The only difference between the two will relate to activation where the upgrade route will inherit the activation status of the earlier Windows 7/8/10 installation, whilst you’re likely to need to enter an activation key when installing to a device which hasn’t previously been activated.

I tried to just do an upgrade on a windows 10 system drive and it will not work. I started the machine in Windows 10 then ran the setup file on the USB stick. I selected to upgrade the windows 10 drive with the USB software. It started up the install software but then told me I have an unsupported machine and I had to stop the install. It will only let me wipe out the entire drive first and put a fresh install of windows 11 on the machine as it is an unsupported system for Windows 11 to be on it. Any way to get around this setup on the USB to not check the machine first when you only want to upgrade? I would like to only upgrade my windows 10 drive and keep all my files and stuff I have been using for the last few years and not start all over putting things back into it.

Hi again. One thing which worked for us on a couple of devices…At the very start of the Windows 11 installation process, you’re asked if you want the installer to check for updates…Don’t allow this to happen. In fact, we’d recommend disconnecting any ethernet or Wi-Fi connection before starting the installation. It seems that the installer is “phoning home” and is able to to identify unsupported systems at this stage. Blocking this connection might let you proceed, and you can immediately reconnect to the internet at the earliest opportunity after these initial checks. We won’t claim this works in every instance, but it did resolve the situation for all of our machines which didn’t work immediately. Let us know how you get on.

Жыл бұрын
Hi @Mr Bardel. Supplying your own image is an entirely sensible strategy, and we’d always advocate sourcing this directly from Microsoft via this link: www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows11 (follow the option labelled “Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO)”). Alternatively, Rufus version 4.0 can source the image directly for you. To do this, click the downward pointing arrow immediately to the right of the box labelled “Select.” From the menu which appears, select the option labelled “Download.” The box which previously contained the word “Select” will now have changed to “Download” and when you click it, you will be offered downloads including Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8.1 and UEFI Shell options. Clicking “Continue” will present further dialogs which you should work through until the option to save the .iso image appears and the download commences. This isn’t quite the end of the story, because, in order to create a modified installer which bypasses R.A.M., Secure Boot and T.P.M. requirements, we need to access the customisation dialog, and the method for doing this differs slightly from that shown in our video. These options are now available once you’ve clicked the “Start” button in the lower right of the main interface. Once you’ve customised your installer, you can let Rufus create the installation media for you.

Hi again @D J. We’d certainly follow your logic on this. As you mention, with 300 G.B. free, drive space simply isn’t an issue, and the error message seems more like a catch-all term for incompatibility, rather than the literal truth. No drop down menu on Rufus to directly download ?
@TechFixFlix
2 жыл бұрын
Hi @Matty from Macc.

Hi again @Patrick. We weren’t aware of game developers enforcing T.P.M. until we read your reply, and researching around the topic, it’s clear that titles like Valorant are leading the way in this regard (see www.windowslatest.com/2021/09/05/riot-games-valorant-game-is-enforcing-tpm-2-0-on-windows-11). We’re not sure why game developers would adopt this strategy, as it blocks off a potential revenue stream for them. We would also suggest that, at present, the overwhelming majority of titles do not enforce this requirement, and we haven’t encountered a game in our own library which we are unable to play, although the future direction remains uncertain. Obviously the quality of games offered by a Chromebook won’t be as high as that offered by an unsupported P.C., although this remains a viable next step for devices reaching their twilight years. In your position, we’d be inclined to remain with Windows to access our existing game library, and simply write-off the very small number of titles which might insist upon enforcing T.P.M. Of course, it’s your machine and you have absolute freedom to use it in any way you see fit, and we’re not in the business of persuading anyone to use their device in any particular way. In terms of updates to “Unsupported” systems, it remains the case that we continue to be able to use Windows Update to receive updates in the normal way, and, whilst Microsoft reserve the right to turn off the update tap at any time, thus far they have not. We’ve written more on this topic at: www.techfixflix.com/2022/01/updating-windows-11-on-unsupported-systems.html

That’s not correct @Michael Javert, and will not work in the context of an unsupported system. Running the files directly from the drive without modification will trigger the detection mechanisms which prevent Windows 11 from successfully installing on devices which lack T.P.M. hardware, or Secure Boot capabilities, or which possess insufficient R.A.M. This is where Rufus, or a similar utility or a registry modification will be required. Windows 11 will otherwise entirely fail to install for machines in these categories. Therefore we disagree with your description of Rufus as “a waste of time [and] totally unnecessary.” Any additional complications are literally the difference between updating to Windows 11 and being stuck on Windows 10. Your method is appropriate for officially “supported” systems, although that isn’t the context discussed in our video.

Hi @Gary McCrohan. The modified U.S.B. installer will allow you to perform either an upgrade or a clean installation, and it’s very much a free choice for you in accordance with whatever best suits your needs. If you’d like to keep your existing apps, files, folders and some settings, the upgrade route will be the way to go. If you’d prefer to start from a blank canvas, then a clean installation will be preferable. In either event, we’d strongly advocate creating a full system image of your existing Windows 8.1 setup using the method shown in our video, which would enable you to immediately revert back to your current setup in the event that the update fails, or doesn’t meet your requirements. In terms of licensing, Windows 11 will recognise and accept your existing Windows 8.1 license, and update it to its Windows 11 equivalent and this will apply even in a clean installation scenario, because the Windows licence will have been associated with the hardware profile of your device.

Hi Jc Kim. We thought we’d try running your error message through ChatGPT, which gave the following response (quoted verbatim) below: “Error 0xC1900101 - 0x20017 is a specific error code that appears when trying to upgrade Windows 10 to a newer version. It typically indicates that the installation failed in the FIRST_BOOT phase and is related to compatibility issues with drivers or applications installed on the system. To resolve the issue, try the following steps: Disconnect any non-essential peripherals connected to your computer, such as a printer or a scanner. Make sure that your system meets the minimum requirements for the upgrade. [This does not apply to your query, because we are deliberately working around Windows 11’s minimum requirements]. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter and check for any update related issues. [This does not apply to your query, because we are deliberately working around Windows 11’s minimum requirements]. Uninstall any third-party antivirus software temporarily. Remove any recently installed applications or drivers that may be causing compatibility issues. Run the upgrade again and see if the issue is resolved. If these steps do not resolve the issue, you can try a fresh installation of the new version of Windows.” This seems like sensible advice. We certainly agree with the advice about unplugging any unnecessary hardware from the system. We’ve mentioned these examples before, but we’ve experienced installations halted by an SD Card left in a slot, and an internal D.V.D. drive which we physically disconnected from the motherboard. If possible, disconnect everything except the screen, keyboard and mouse. Laptops are even harder, because there’s usually very little to disconnect. In this instance, try to update every driver to the most recent compatible version before updating Windows. This is one of the few instances where we’d recommend trying a utility like Driver Booster to update those drivers which Windows Update fails to identify. See our video at kzitem.info/news/bejne/w4Z9x6VuooN_aW0 for details. Be sure to create a System Restore Point and full system image before experimenting, to ensure that you can at least revert back to your existing Windows 10 setup in the event of catastrophic failure.

Hi @Cleanliness Tv. Yes, we believe that your laptop will be able to run Windows 11, and we have found it to be compatible with almost any device manufactured during the 64-bit era. Prior to undertaking any major upgrade to your laptop, we would recommend performing the following four backup operations in order to provide you with a safety net which will allow you to experiment, safe in the knowledge that you will be able to revert to your original installation at any time. 1 )..Create a System Restore point. In the event that anything should go wrong, this will give you the opportunity to roll the system back to a time before changes were made. 2 )..Create a full system image. In addition to the Restore Point, you should also create an image of your full system drive. We’ve covered this in our video “Preparing For Windows 11 - Creating A Full System Image,” found at kzitem.info/news/bejne/r4efsWikmJF5iaw and the content is applicable whether you are upgrading to a new version of Windows or simply updating your existing system. The output of this process is a single file containing a snapshot of your system drive, frozen in time at the point of its creation. If System Restore doesn’t work or becomes unavailable, you can use the full system image to overwrite the content of your system drive, returning it to its pre-update status. In the video, we use a third-party utility, but the same outcome can be achieved using “Backup and Restore (Windows 7)” which, despite its name, is built-in to Windows 7, 8, 10 and 11. 3 )..Create a backup of your existing device drivers. In the event that you need to reinstall hardware drivers, the most straightforward solution is to have your existing drivers fully backed up. In our video “Backup Windows Hardware Drivers” found at kzitem.info/news/bejne/k6aNyY6Vm3yloYY we provide a single command solution which will back up every driver on the system, providing you with a library to which you can revert should you need. 4 )..Create a backup of your personal files and folders. If you corrupt Windows, it can be reinstalled. If you delete a driver it can be redownloaded. These things can easily be found on the internet, and there are many sources. What cannot be replaced are the user-generated documents, photos, videos and music which are unique to you. We’ve covered a method for backing up these types of file in our video “SyncBack - Backup Software For Windows” found at kzitem.info/news/bejne/r4x4smSZo6d1bKA Don’t forget to include other types of personalisations like system configuration files, user-generated templates, saved states and saved games. We’d strongly suggest ensuring that these backups are stored on an external drive which can be removed from the main P.C. This could be a portable hard drive or something as simple as a U.S.B. stick.

Thank you for your kind support of the channel, which is very much appreciated. People reporting their experiences of Windows 11 have suggested that 2 G.B. is insufficient, whilst 4 G.B. seems to offer entirely acceptable performance, and we can confirm that from personal experience. At 3 G.B., your laptop resides precisely between these two values, so it’s going to be interesting to see just how well it handles Windows 11. If you’re currently running Windows 10, you should expect a similar level of performance after updating to Windows 11. It’s also for this reason that we strongly recommend backing up and imaging your existing system, which will allow you to revert back if Windows 11 isn’t to your satisfaction. Finally, if your budget permits, and you can locate appropriate components, performing a R.A.M. upgrade could prolong the useful life of your device.

It’s a pity that your expert couldn’t have offered a more detailed explanation into what caused the “something went wrong” error. We know that it’s going to be quite demanding on your 3 G.B. of R.A.M., and we know there’s a risk that the installation might go wrong based on your previous experience of attempting to upgrade to Windows 10. We certainly won’t push you in any particular direction, and it’s entirely your choice as to what you feel comfortable with. If you do decide to attempt the update, we’d always strongly suggest… 3 )..Creating a System Image of your current machine before updating to Windows 11. You’ll need something on which to store the backup, like a portable hard drive or a U.S.B. stick. The software you’ll need is included with every version of Windows. Search for “Backup And Restore (Windows 7).” Despite being named after Windows 7, it also works on Windows 8, 10 and 11. Use the software to create a full system image. Once you create the image, you can restore it at any time, meaning that, even if your Windows 11 installation entirely fails, you can immediately return to Windows 8, complete with all your files, folders, apps and settings, having lost nothing but time. Following route 3 allows you to try to install Windows 11, but gives you an easy path back to Windows 8 if you need one. If, having read all that, you’re still unsure, your safest option would be to remain on Windows 8.

Can I upgrade from Windows 🪟 7 to Windows 🪟 11
@TechFixFlix

You certainly can @Mohammed Ali. Your existing Windows 7 licence is typically valid for the equivalent edition of Windows 8, 10 or 11. Provided that your device has a 64-bit processor and you can bypass the remaining hardware requirements (as shown in our video), an upgrade of this type is entirely possible.

Secure boot should be on?
@TechFixFlix
2 жыл бұрын
Hi @Mohamad Wahba. In an ideal world, Secure Boot should be on. We’ve mentioned in the video and in the comments that the method we show deliberately circumvents requirements for both Secure Boot and a T.P.M., and this is essentially a last resort for machines which would otherwise be denied the opportunity to run Windows 11. It isn’t ideal, but Microsoft have ultimately left users of older hardware with no easy choices here. So, whilst we can work without Secure Boot, doing so creates a greater level of risk than using a machine which is able to implement it.

Hi, my machine has a non UEFI bios. By selecting "Bios or Non UEFI CSM" will this work Ok as an upgrade to WIN 10?
@TechFixFlix
2 жыл бұрын
Hi @Will Barger. This should work as B.I.O.S./U.E.F.I. settings shouldn’t come into play for an upgrade from Windows 10, in that you’ll be running setup from the Windows 10 desktop rather than booting directly from the U.S.B. stick. Once you’ve created the U.S.B. media, you can simply navigate to it and run the setup utility. Indeed, you could even copy the contents to your hard drive and eliminate the U.S.B. stick from the process. The important element here is that you’re already running Windows 10, so the upgrade path is more straightforward than a clean installation.

How do you do an in place upgrade from Windows 10 to 11 using the Rufus USB ?
@TechFixFlix
Жыл бұрын
That’s a great question, and the answer is very straightforward. Firstly, create the U.S.B. installer as shown in our video (although do note that the options to bypass compatibility checks now appear only when you click the large “Start” button in the lower section of Rufus’ main interface). Once you’ve created the U.S.B. stick, insert it into the target computer and open it in File Explorer. Run the Setup application, which you’ll find in the root directory of the U.S.B. stick. This will launch the Windows installation process, after which you simply need to work through the setup steps. In practice, this will allow you to perform an in-place update, provided that you select the “upgrade” option, and choose to keep your files, folders and apps. Take care when making your selections to ensure you preserve those aspects of your current installation which you wish to retain.

@@TechFixFlix Thank you for your response. That makes sense. There is now an option for bitlocker. Should I use that for an upgrade ?
@TechFixFlix
Жыл бұрын
There are no set rules here @speedbird8326, and this may well come down to your own personal preference. On the plus side, BitLocker will significantly reduce opportunities for data harvesting in the event that your device is lost, stolen, becomes inoperable or is decommissioned, encrypting the entirety of the physical drive. It is also fully integrated into Windows 11 with a relatively low impact on overall system performance. Conversely, that performance is increased through the usage of a hardware T.P.M. chip, and we appreciate that most people watching this video are doing so precisely because their machine lacks this very chip, without which there may be some increase in boot times, particularly when using non-solid-state hard drives. So, there’s a balancing act to be struck between data security and performance, and it’s up to you to identify your personal priority.

Hi @Deepak Singh Airy. We’ve used this method on 14 year old P.C.s running Pentium processors, so your machine is actually somewhat younger than that. As long as your machine has a 64-bit processor, there’s a reasonable possibility that it will work. Given that the Windows 11 image can be obtained for free directly from Microsoft at www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows11 and Rufus can be obtained, again for free, from rufus.ie/en/ all that remains is to purchase a good quality U.S.B. stick of 16 G.B. or upwards (see amzn.to/3WQI10j for an example costing just over 5 U.S.D. or 7.5 G.B.P.). Then simply follow our guide to create your media. Once created, the stick can, of course, be recycled for other projects).

Hi @AREF TV. As you’ll be aware, Rufus works exclusively on the Windows platform, and therefore implementing a solution on a Linux distro poses a challenge, and we might need to get a bit creative. We also note that you don’t wish to use WINE, which is a reasonable stipulation, but does raise the difficulty yet further. If we were taking on this challenge, our first thought would be to turn to VirtualBox, which runs on Ubuntu, and can be downloaded from www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads Having installed VirtualBox, we’d then download a Windows 10 .iso image directly from Microsoft at www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10ISO and create a Windows 10 virtual machine. The .iso image is free and will run without having to licence it. We’d then install Rufus on the Windows 10 VM and create the Windows 11 installation media by following the steps shown in our tutorial. We’re well aware that we’re installing a full version of Windows just to create Windows installation media, and, having never tried it, this is purely theoretical and entirely untested. Nevertheless, given the parameters which you’ve set out, we do need to go the extra mile to achieve the outcome. We were wondering whether we might be able to achieve something similar using a WindowsPE (“Rescue Disk”) scenario which runs a slimmed-down version directly from a U.S.B. stick, although we suspect that this environment wouldn’t support Rufus.

Hi @Two_Heads_Talking. Alternatively, you can simply direct the .iso file directly from Microsoft at: www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows11

That had us baffled for a while too. It isn’t immediately obvious that blocking updates also blocks access to .isos, because they are very different things. Hi there. You can use the U.S.B. stick created by Rufus in one of two ways, each with a different outcome. If you choose to open the U,S.B. stick from inside your existing Windows installation and run the Setup file, you will have the opportunity to upgrade your existing system, whilst keeping your stored apps, files, folders and settings. Alternatively, you can instruct your computer’s B.I.O.S. (or U.E.F.I.) to boot directly from the stick, then perform a clean installation. This method will wipe your existing apps, files, folders and settings. So, either route is open to you. Whichever option you choose, it’s entirely sensible to first create a full system image backup, by following the tutorial which we recommend in the video. This will provide a degree of insurance should anything go wrong during the upgrade process.

The minimum hardware requirements for Windows 11 represent the most significant barrier to upgrade of any Windows version, and that will prevent many casual users from migrating to the latest operating system, with the effect of forcing them to buy entirely new hardware. We’ve written at length about our grave financial and environmental concerns about this strategy elsewhere in the comments for this video. Once you’ve jumped over the installation hurdles, we’d suggest that Windows 11 isn’t hugely distinct from any other recent version, and the learning curve from Windows 10 is quite gentle. Of course, your mileage may vary. We’d love to know what aspects of Windows 11 are causing you grief.

Ventoy does a better job of this and you can save numerous ISO files on the same thumb drive.
@TechFixFlix
6 ай бұрын
Hi @cerescop. We agree that Ventoy is a great choice for creating a multi-purpose thumb drive, and, with sufficient capacity on a U.S.B. stick, we could comfortably set up installers for various versions of Windows, macOS, some Linux distros and Android. Indeed, we’ve very much considered featuring exactly this topic for a future video which might be of interest to our community. We’re not so certain that Ventoy does a better job than Rufus when it comes to bypassing Windows 11 hardware restrictions, in that, the last time we looked into this process, the user is required to create a .json file within the Ventoy directory, then append 15 lines of code before saving the file. Whilst none of that is particularly complicated, it does introduce another potential barrier to entry when compared to the more straightforward selection from a menu system offered by Rufus. Whilst the tech-literate won’t be at all put off by the Ventoy method, this particular tutorial needs to be as straightforward as possible because the potential audience is so vast, and the range of levels of expertise so broad when dealing with an operating system with such a wide user-base. For this reason, we still advocate using Rufus for this task, although Ventoy has much to offer.

Sounds great @cerescop. How is this filter implemented in Ventoy? Ideally, this needs to be done in a way which is very easy for even novice users to follow, because the eventual demise of Windows 10 impacts upon great many people - with varying levels of technical competence - who will need to be able to replicate the installation method. As mentioned in our last reply, we think that the average user will find the drop-down menus in Rufus easier to negotiate than the .json file used in our previous experience of Ventoy, so any update in Ventoy's methodology would make it a serious rival to Rufus.

From what I could tell it baked into the programming as is when you download and install it. I checked the documentation and it says that there are switches setup in the programing and the default is set to take the requirements out. To the user it is transparent, no additions necessary. There’s an important list of hardware and software with which Rufus is incompatible, and we’ll guide you toward Rufus’ GitHub page at github.com/pbatard/rufus/wiki/FAQ#list-of-hardware-and-software-rufus-isnt-compatible-with In short, there are two incompatible types of U.S.B. stick, manufactured by Lexar and PNY which can be problematic. In addition to that, there is a longer list of security software which may flag Rufus’ operations as suspicious and prevent them. If you use these applications, you’ll need to temporarily suspend them in order to allow Rufus to run. If none of the above is applicable, it’s likely to be the result of system settings, in which case we’d refer you to this article from the same source: github.com/pbatard/rufus/wiki/FAQ#error-0x00000005-access-is-denied There’s quite a bit to work through there, but hopefully you’ll be able to identify the issue preventing access.
