Maybe get a large led screen and put a camera outside and you can literally see "through" a virtual window at people and cars going by. That would fool your mind beyond belief. Or...a live mountain view. The future says we can have "summer" in the middle of winter.

First and most important, Jacob: Your pleasant disposition and positive attitude are a delight. Made me want to continue watching. Second, great idea and good job with execution. I have a real dark house (just the era it was built, the overhang of the roof over the entire perimeter of the house and zero ceiling-mounted lights...) and I have been googling 'imitation windows' and others to see what is out there for purchase and use, without needing to be recessed. I like your idea, along with the great suggestions of some other folks (use existing framed mirror as starting point). I have most of the heavy window coverings removed from my windows but due to proximity of neighbors, I chose to use the frosted window cling films so that I could get as much daylight without being seen dashing from washroom to bedroom in my birthday suit. Perhaps you could try the frosted cling (you roll it out and cut it to size before applying) over your current plexi surfaces?... and then you could open the blinds for more light, but achieve that diffusion you were looking for. Also, I used 1 x 3's before for a different project and found that I should have splurged for the next upgrade of wood type and depth. Last tip, I learned that using wood putty to fill gaps at the joints of the frame, then sanding to smooth out before painting provides an even more polished finished product. Best of luck in all your future projects!

I'm so happy I found your channel. Although I *do* have windows, on one side of my apartment is under the balcony overhang for the apartnemts above me and so the light is limited. The worst by far is my kitchen tho as not only is light blocked from above but it also faces a brick wall a few feet away and it's where people walk past to go upstairs. Double wammy of no light and, if left with no blinds etc, no privacy. So, seeing what you did here, I'm thinking I could create similar but within my existing window recess and cover the window panes with mirrored sticky backed vinyl and attach the leds to the outer and inner framework and then add a blind to the window as normal. Hopefully that will give the space needed between the leds and the blind to look like sunlight without needing to add any perspex that's frosted etc. My window is a pretty deep recess so should be fine 🤞. Thank toy for the inspiration and how to. It was great watching and seeing what we can all do with a little hit of outside the box thinking.

It looks great! And you have such a nice personality, I really enjoyed watching this. I am not handy and I have a really small budget, but I want a faux window in my window-less bedroom. Do you think something similar could be made with a picture frame or shadow boxes? I've been watching and reading lots of videos on how to make fake windows and everything is just way above my skill level, so I had an idea to maybe buy shadowboxes, remote control LED lights, tin foil, and white muslin fabric. I'd set it up the same as yours (foil inside, attach in LEDs) and glue the fabric to the outside of the box. Then if it was hung up behind curtains, it might look somewhat real. Do you think it would work?
@JacobCarlson

You could definitely use a premade shadowbox instead of building your own. I decided to make my own because I wanted it bigger but a shadowbox would work just as well. You should definitely go for it!

Right angle clamps are cheap, use them. Pocket hole jigs also aren't bad for quick-and-easy joints that don't need a whole lot of strength (still stronger than method shown in video). Lexan is insanely expensive for what it is but at least you don't have to worry about scratches as much. As you've probably found out by now... You could have likely saved some money and got better results if you used the panels from dead LCD TV'S. You can normally find them free or very cheap in most cities on Craigslist, etc. They spread the LED lights across the whole panel to look more realistic. I've made a few now this way for my photography light boxes.

Thanks for this. Interesting. Budget considerations aside, another thing that someone without a window could do would be to frame a flat-screen tv or even a small monitor, and have it play the Google slideshow or a series of photos. (I like to play the Google show on my big-screen tv for variety, even though my living room has a wall of windows.) Another thing I remember seeing somewhere is setting up a camera to record the actual scene outside of the house (but at first-floor level or higher, obviously), streaming it to a framed faux-window tv or monitor placed on the wall. Streaming of natural wonders is available through our National Parks websites, as well. A few observations: For super-reflective glass that could be used instead of the plywood at the back of the fake window, a mercury-glass-effect paint might be a good idea. It's applied to the back of the glass, appearing a dull gray there, but looks like a mirror from the other side. Or the shiny metal or fake-metal flashing that is sold in hardware stores or simply an inexpensive mirror could be used. (I bought one that actually looks like a window, frame, mullions, and all, on clearance at Big Lots, and am thinking of removing the glass and using the frame as the front portion of a project like yours.) Having used the frosted-effect spray paint, I know that getting even coverage is very difficult, and would suggest a window film instead. The static-cling kind is very easy to apply. If the use of an inexpensive blind is planned, the window frame could be built to correspond to the dimensions of the blinds that are readily available. For an even more diffuse look, balloon shades or a textured fabric like linen could be used. Just my two cents...

Great job, man. As a brainstorm suggestion to create more realism, I think some sort of diffuser panel might soften those L.E.D.'s. Perhaps a piece of clear glass or Plexiglas might work with a piece of opaque privacy cling film on it....or possibly a fluorescent drop ceiling diffuser panel. Also, high CRI rated L.E.D.'s will allow for the most realistic spectrum of natural colored light to emit. Your color warmth was a good choice. For daylight emulation, you probably want 6,000k or 6,500k. I think for realism, if you complete a window sill, it'll also help some. Again, great job you did on a simple D.I.Y. project. 👍

Same here! Fantastic way to do this, and perfect tutorial. This was the exact way I was going to do it except not with frosted glass spray, I was going to use frosted style sticky back plastic!

It looks so realistic. I will install this type of window on my summer appartment, which is a basement with little natural light. Thank you! You did a very good job!

Instead of RGB leds, I'd use 5600k or so white leds with high color rendering index. I'm making something similar using panel housing from a broken 46" tv as my frame and I tried RGB strips I have lying around. Even after setting it to white, it really messes up colors, the light that comes out of it looks white but skin etc does not look natural at all when lit by it. TV panels have these diffusion and BEF-layers to diffuse the light by the way, they are really great for faking sunlight when coupled with high CRI leds. PS. I'd try crumbling the foil before fixing it to the back to get more diffuse light out of the fake window.

Maybe you could have done a rough painting of a tree on the glass, that may have covered lights a bit and and created light and dark patches through the window, I wanted a window in my bathroom

Hey Jacob! It's Beryl. Just a tip from the cosplay community, another great Go-to diffuser for LED lights is packaging material that you can buy in rolls for shipping delicate things. Comes in different thicknesses. All in all, this looks FANTASTIC, dude! The google home integration is a winning touch. Loving this series so far. #makersgonnamake

Hey, Beryl! Thanks for the tip! Are you talking about the stuff that is like a flexible sheet of squishy foam? If so, that is a great idea and I will definitely store that in the toolkit for future projects.
