This is basically a complete rehash of the Fusion 360 quick tip below, but with no narration and less clarity. You should probably just go watch theirs:
• QUICK TIP: Mesh to Solid
The gist is that I needed to model my car dashboard, with the surface transformed from mesh into some object I could cut bodies with.
1) use sketch / create mesh section a few times to create contours over your region of interest.
2) use sketch / fit curves to mesh section to create sketch elements from the regions of interest on the mesh sections. NOTE: make sure to use the same number of points on each fit, and keep them near the same features. Imagine that the next command will try hard to draw straight lines between adjacent points. Notice how I place points on the peaks and valleys of the curves, for example.
3) Switch to the Patch workspace
4) Use the Loft command and select the newly created profiles.
5) Hope that's good enough for your application.
