They talked a bit about that in the tomes video. Tome of the Horde houndmasters + tome of Beasts animal buffs is a simple early game one.

Is there a way to alter the color of unit health bars in combat? I play with a couple friends who are red/green color blind, and the health bars as is are going to make things harder for them. Also, what does combat look like with 3+ leaders involved? Do your allies' armies count towards your cap of armies that can be involved in the battle?

Im hoping it makes it easier to join/have ai allies join fights. Felt like i could never get help or give help to the ai players cause their armies are never adjacent. With this is I think making alliances with AI feels more meaningful.

This is disappointing, as some one that only got into AoW in AoWPF, lets just says I love my laser tanks, walkers, and carrier commands, Long Live the Vanguard. I wonder if Triumph Studios have learnt how to balance a video game yet or if Covert-Ops is still op? I love sacrificing Knowledge to gain resistances, only to be countered by Psionic attacks, which ignore cover and armor.

The missing unit descriptions are a shame. Great unit models like floating eye monsters or lost mages just seem generic without even a brief little lore paragraph for them like AOW3 and PF did. The customizability is great but that's not a reason to throw out at least basic descriptions of units.

One crucial information that I found lacking in both the tutorial video and the ingame wiki is how death of units and HP recovery functions. E.g. is it only by waiting that you can regenerate hp out of combat? Otherwise, great videos! Really awesome introduction, especially when you recognize prominent strategy players :)

Ngl, needing a hero for a siege makes zero sense. Sometimes I'd use a high tier as a mini hero, leading lower tier armies...it'd be good enough to defend or take cities while my heroes do other things. This just seems like a constraining mechanic. Hope we can mod it out.

I imagine it’s so you can’t literally sent some random unit to a city and “siege it” locking the city into that siege for an eternity because it seems like anyone can siege anything it just takes time The lower your power compared to their defense the longer it takes, but I think you’ll always eventually “get to siege the city” eventually on a battle, even if it takes 50 turns your “one unit” eventually gets that In other words, it’s a balancing issue

@@Jabberwokee Yeah but if you lock it down with a weak force, they could just be given the choice or script to sally out and defeat it. Defenders often do that in real sieges, idk how the devs would discredit it in spite of all the hard work they've put in everywhere else.

They did, it's been shown in the dev gameplay streams. Melee units will always hit, but ranged units have an accuracy % based on distance and anything getting in the way of the shot, like terrain. Those lower accuracy shots can graze for lower damage, outright miss, etc.

@@GG21188 It's more to do different kinds of games. Fantasy series are melee focused with ranged being simplified, Planetfall was ranged focused having to make that combat more engaging.

I'll be honest, I'm not convinced about the way sieges work. Don't really get why you can't just destroy the walls during combat like in AoW3 and instead have to do it from the world map by just clicking through menus. In fact, clicking through a bunch of options and spending mana/gold seems very Paradox like, wouldn't surprise me if that was some sort of weird demand they had for the developers.

This system allows you to build up fortifications and potentially reinforce before enemies siege your cities. Say you have 100 fortification and they're doing 15 damage per turn, you get 7 turns before they can attack. That gives you time to bring over defensive stacks, summon units, finish up a construction or two, or what ever. It's WAY better than the AOW3 system where you can sneak an army in the rear and just destroy multiple cities defended by weak stuff with your tier 4 death stack. Sieges in real life sometimes took literal years, just running in and smashing the walls down in one day like AOW3 is incredibly ridiculous, and makes the game less strategic overall.

You can build onagers to create extra holes in the walls (in the siege livestream they show this) and some units can demolish walls as well

They said it in the latest dev diary: they way it was implemented in previous iteration made the siege battle more tedious than fun, so people usually just auto-resolved them, especially larger ones. This way the players have some freedom to respond, and multiple ways to approach, while the battle itself is about the decisive attack.

@@L4sz10 I wish it were slightly a bit more about the smashing walls part. For one, yes building and dragging rams/trebs from the next city over is a pain...building them while besieging is far better. But I always loved moving and protecting my trebs as they hammer the walls, protecting them from a sally out. I only think AoW3 sieges were horribly boring because it was just the same map every time, like you were constantly fighting manticore riders defending the same damn walls battle after battle no matter how unique the map made each city look.

Hoping for some nuance with the siege system, like being able to raid outposts with leaderless armies. Needing at least 1 leader to siege any actual settlement is probably fine in practice since you want to be using leaders anyway but I agree with others that having this be a toggle option would be good

Devs confirmed that you can use armies without heroes to pillage provinces. Laying siege with the hero and pillage the countryside with other armies during siege is a valid strategy (AI also does it).

How it seems to work is that there are tiers of research. So while not official ages, you go through tiers 1 through 5 over the course of a game

No, but you get more advanced tomes of magic the more you research. Higher level tomes give you access to better spells and units. You "progress" your city units by building more advanced city structures, like upgrading your town hall from 1 -> 2 unlocks your societies tier 2 units from that city.

They won't. How are they supposed to solve this so-called issue? You've destroyed the majority of enemy's army, with your army intact, what do you want to happen? The looser should get a couple free stacks or what? At least with the siege system you can't kill the leader and then take his capital in 1-2 turns, cause you'll need to siege it first, and the leader will recover and get a bit of reinforcements, but it won't change much.

@@tzarkolbaska2746 BTw this isnt a specific issue with AOW its more a genre issue, spending hours building your empire and your opponent losing a fight and rage quits(sometimes prematurely).

That's what war scores and attrition/fatigue does in other Paradox games. Wars aren't waged against an enemy generally, but for war goals. However, I think that would be hard to implement a turn-based 4x strategy like AoW4, because it is very abstract. It fits well with grand strategies, but risky with 4X games.
