This hit me in the feels! My girlie is leash reactive to dogs. She's made exponential progress, leashed scent work classes and no more reaction to the dogs. However, recently at the park, she acted as if she wanted to eat the sweetest golden retriever. Got her into vehicle and bawled! She is a sweet pea at home. I put her into a situation "thinking" she'd be ok. And, welp, nope! Back to building confidence and slowly working triggers. I needed to hear this today. Thank you!

You hit the nail on the head! I got a couple of those looks and comments in the first two weeks I had George. I started facing “Doubt” that because he was a Malinois he was just going to be a terrorist and I had no business having a dog like him. Then I looked at him and said, “no way!” George is just being his puppy self and has already shown me how incredibly intelligent and loving he is and it’s really up to me and my attitude that makes the difference! Thanks Susan for your understanding and encouragement.

So happy I have watched this podcast....more than once. I myself struggle with confidence and so does my dog (she is totally me). We went to a beginners hoopers class, the trainer knows us and let the others know Winnie is a little insecure so we are going ensure we celebrate her wins each round and help her. This podcast was in my head, I know how great she is and went to sleep the night before thinking positive thoughts that we will have so much fun. Best decision we made and Winnie was a natural and after 3 weeks we were doing the same as the dogs that started 3 weeks b4 we did. Thx Susan.

I am actually crying here , I have 2 dogs , my first is very reactive to dogs and it’s very upsetting , we got a puppy and since we got him I’ve been attending training classes with the puppy so he’s not reactive to other dogs , guess what ! He’s doing the same thing as my older dog so I’m actually so upset I didn’t want him to be like that , to suffer and I feel guilty , so happy to find your podcast

I know a dog who is not allowed to poop, pee or sniff in public. She would not drink water from the public dog bubblers until my dog gave her the incentive and I rewarded her confidence. Although rare, such owners exist.

You’ve earned my respect and subscription. I just adopted a border collie rescue. She’s super reactive. I tried everything but an e collar and a prong collar. The gentle leader seems to work best. We still have a lot of ground to cover, but she’s an angel to me 😊.

Thank you so much for this. I didn’t even realize how much I was feeling this way until I saw this video and started tearing up 😢 I have been working on my perspective of being judged while training our insecure (scared and barking at everything) puppy and this has helped me embrace that what I’m doing with our pup is much more important for our relationship than me trying to get a stranger to approve of me. 😊 And BTW…she’s been improving even with some set backs. I’m excited about adding what I’m learning from your videos. 🥳

The timing on this podcast is impeccable for me. I needed to hear this so badly. I feel all the things!! Ugh. We have had our rescue puppy for 3 1/2 months and even though I have been taking all information possible from Crate Games to Home School the Dog to Recallers, only now am I beginning to realize that I need to create a more confident me so I can bring clarity to my lovely dog who is now mostly good but reactive enough out in the world to make me embarrassed. And I am finally starting to see where I need to focus again to provide CLARITY. I have heard you say it a hundred times but today it actually found its mark. A little like how I see things click for my dog eventually on the 100th time. :) Thank you so much for your persistence.

Thanks so much for this blog. My reactive dog came to me as a rescue and I was embarrassed. I’ve been training and showing dogs since I was 12 and I didn’t know what to do. Thank goodness for 4 people my friend Donna who introduced me to Dr Reich who explained he was scared. Dr Reich the vet behaviorist who explained what was going on with him Darlene who made the first breakthrough in his training and you Susan for all the games that have helped us move forward.

This episode really hit home for me as well. I have an amazing pup whose ability is exceptional. His limitations are my lack of expertise. So I am working on improving my skills and understanding to better instill communication to promote his confidence so reactive moments become less and less. We are definitely making progress but these videos are really helpful to understand the detail and nuances that are easy for those of us less astute to miss.

Our previous dog, a standard poodle, was kept in a tiny crate as a puppy, then abused, and was a submissive wetter by the time we adopted him at 18 months. We worked him through that. He was never completely calm, bless his sweet soul. So nervous and shy but so wonderful. Now we have a new rescue, she was a stray only in September, and she has anxiety. You can tell that she wants to warm up and trust, but she’s so young and over excited sometimes (only a year old) that it can be frustrating. I’ve been in tears quite a bit, but she has this golden nugget of love and moments of calm and tenderness. I know she’s going to need a lot of patience and work. It’s only been 2.5 months. Edit: I’ve been blaming myself a lot, I work on her so hard and I know she’s still so young and learning, but then company comes over or we have to take her to the vet or my husband comes home or the cat comes out etc etc etc and it goes out the window sometimes. Some days are great, some days are wild. On the rough days I feel so exhausted and like I’m doing everything wrong. It’s definitely something I need to work on. I’m going to start journaling her progress - which is something I wish I had done with our poodle, now that he’s gone.

@melissajenkins9960 we adopted an 11 month old golden retriever rescue 2 weeks ago. He and his litter mates had been kept in a crate for over 7 mos with no positive socialization. A local golden rescue group purchased then from social media. Both were fostered by great families. We have had him a few weeks and he is making great progress. In my opinion, the key is to have patience and go slow! In the way you move and approach your new pet, show them around the home, etc. Be patient and realize the dog is decompressing, too. Give the dog random acts of love and affection to reassure him, especially early on, but always. Best of luck.

Thank you! The dog I was training took off from the yard yesterday. My first thought was "what did I do?!" Fortunately a good sam walking by grabbed the handle on her harness but I totally take responsibility for not appropriately assessing the environment before taking off her leash. I did not see that one of the gates had been left open🤦♀She was simply excited for being outside, which tells me that being outdoors off leash is great reinforcer for her. Going forward my game plan is to add more layers to her IYC education, giving her better reinforcement for remaining in the yard, and upping her opportunities to win in an outdoor HZ regardless if there are gates open or holes somewhere along the fence

As always, an excellent podcast! It gives me hope as I continue to deal with my very anxious and scared little dog! One of my takes from this podcast is the importance of engaging my dog in a fun game of tug before I step into training. Not fair of me to expect him to be enthusiastic and fast right after he has been lying around all day waiting for me to finish work…

Not at all meaning this in a rude way’ if your dog is doing that when someone is already there… there’s no magic quick fix’ everything even for a human is what…. Learned! It takes time u have to work with them’ I truly try to help ppl especially those on local fb groups who have no idea how to be a dog owner’ Nothing against u at all’ sorry if it sounds that way’ Working with them from puppy age is best’ but it takes time most ppl give up or are not consistent which confuses the hell out of your dog’ Consistency is key! Don’t give it up it won’t happen over night’ but if u keep doing it for 2 weeks 100% no cheating I promise u u will see a change’

I don’t know which podcast or KZitem video it was but you had mentioned that dogs like to be in front because that’s where they get reinforced, where we treat them. Makes total sense so I now practice treating from the side. Anna and Zoe get so excited for treats from the side. Anna is part lab, so food is life lol. I have 4 dogs, 3 medium and a small one. So the small one is like don’t forget about me. I’m down here. I have her jump up and have her paws on my knee so I can reach and I’m short. I think learning about where the reinforcement is and what I’m reimbursing and how, will really help me help my girls learn. They other night all three actually got out the front gate lol I did fix it but I thought for a sec, how am I gonna get three dogs back in the gate and actually they were at the gate and I just called them back in and they went back in easily. I was so surprised. I didn’t yell at them or anything. Once I closed the gate, I went in and gave them fresh fish treats I had made for coming back in. It was like so easy. Like wow!

If you showed up to train my dog I’d be excited and grateful but I’d say no because I’d want to be involved in the training process. I want to learn how to train my dog and then future dogs. I’ve adopted dogs with major issues and helped rehab many foster dogs who were very fearful after having gone through really bad situations so I’d want a trainer to train me to train dogs. I’d love help training my one rescue who can still be a big a-hole even after working with 4 positive trainers.

We are about to get a new member of the family, Kaleb an aussie shepherd. My labrador Sidka just lost her brother Jackson to cancer and after some time we have decided to get her a new friend. Jackson was a stellar Border Collie with amazing confidence thanks to Susan Garrett and crate games and all the other trainings I learned about online. He was my best friend and a superstar. I miss him dearly. Sidka too is an amazing girl and did the same training. My question is however, is there anything I can do to prevent, or at least try to prevent, fear of thunderstorms in our new little guy Kaleb once he is home? Sidka has storm anxiety. Its not horrible, as we worked diligently to ease it, but I know its still there. I hate that for her and we still try to work with her, but I genuinely feel she is at the best she can be. I just wanted to know if there was any guidance for perhaps heading off that anxiety from the start, maybe something I missed with Sidka that I could do with our newbie Kaleb. Thank you! - Ariel

My 10 month old German shepherd puppy is afraid of new people. He hides and barks at them. When on a leash, he runs away from the person as far as the leash will allow. At the vet, they have to touch him, so he has to wear a muzzle because he tries to bite them. And recently, I had him on a leash while some friends were over outside. He was sniffing one friend’s shoe, and she held her hand down at her side for him to sniff, and he nipped at her hand (without making contact) and ran behind me and barked at her. What can I do to show him that he doesn’t need to be afraid?
