Would Balenciaga’s cinematic shows be the same without the sonic talents of composer BFRND? Husband and collaborator to creative director Demna, BFRND has shaped the maison’s sound with his techno-imbued tunes since 2017. In this interview, the musician, model, and muse discusses his signature sound. Not interested in being pigeonholed as a techno DJ, he explains how hip-hop influenced the S/S 23 soundtrack, noting that his interpretation of the genre might be different to what we expect.
Speaking to SHOWstudio's editorial assistant Joshua Graham, the two delve into the soundtracks BYFRND has produced for Balenciaga, including the creative process that went behind Demna’s silent Balenciaga couture debut, as well as composing orchestral strings for the brand’s 51st couture collection.
