Just what I needed to do about 40 @ 4.8 long they would have been too expensive to buy so I was rained off and went into the garage, even after watching this clip twice I still managed to get it the wrong way round and messed up two pieces. My garage was not long enough to make a full pass so I had to cut them at 2.4 and make twice as many cuts, but hey ho couldn't do anything outside. Once I got into a rhythm and got my head around I was fine thank for the video.

Glad it was of some help but if it’s of any comfort to you I made some furring strips a few months after this video and I messed one up putting it the wrong way around 😁👍🏻.

Very informative video, I’ll be following your channel from now on. Do you have to fix a firring strip to each joist. Thanks!

Hi Ken and thanks for the comment we appreciate the commitment to us. I always fix every firring strip however dependant on the deck/roof covering you are putting on after I would take into consideration whether the fixings are going to go into the firring strip and then through into the flat roof rafter meaning I would only tack the firring along the thinner part to stop it moving. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

Just curious as to why you fixed parallel packers onto the joists

Hi and thanks for watching. We needed a fall from left to right and also from front to back to get the water to the outlet which is left hand side above the doors. We calculated the furring pitch and then cut a packer under each furring which diminished towards the outlet. Hope this explains it better but please feel free to post again if you need any more explanation or further questions answering. Thanks again for watching our video(s) your time is very much appreciated

@@richardwood4541 so the packers you fixed weren't totally square, you cut the tops so you got the fall from left to right?? is that correct??
@richardwood4541

Hi The furring strips were cut to provide a 1:80 fall from left to right and the packers were cut square/parallel and fixed under each furring strip to provide the 1:80 fall from front to back. For example if the front to back calcs for 1:80 fall were 60mm - 0mm then we cut a 60mm packer furthest away from the outlet underneath the furring and pulled a string line to the outlet end which is 0mm. We then measured down to each flat roof rafter to get a measurement required for the next square packer so on and so on. Really sorry if this doesn’t make sense but it’s hard to explain. I am doing a roof at the minute on the channel so I’ll try to explain it in better on that as I’ve just done the furring strips. 👍🏻

Great video chief. Where did you get the 80 number from though?

Hi Josh glad you enjoyed it. The 80 refers to the required 1:80 ratio slope on a flat roof for water run off. Feel free to ask any more questions no problem I’ll happily answer them. Thanks for watching 👍🏻

Is 1:80 1000÷80 =12.5 , I'm doing something wrong 😮

Is there anything wrong with calculating your span. Buying and oversized timber and then cutting the angle straight on the beam. So say I need a 47*90 for the span. Rather than making a strip I buy a 47*120 and cut the fall on the beam itself? Do you lose structural integrity of the wood

Hi and thank you for taking the time to watch our channel and comment. We are not structural engineers so I couldn’t answer that definitively but I can see you trail of thinking and would agree with it in principal. However, our furring strips are cut to the desired 1:80 fall and sit on top of the calculated span size timber specific for our job so I would always consult an engineer for clarification if for no other reason than for your own piece of mind that it will be safe. 👍🏻

@@mrabuilders6723 thanks for replying. I'm building a shed so feel like the risk is low, but good advice to ask a structural engineer. Keep up the great content.

Probably a lot cheaper to make firring strips than to buy over sized joists

Thanks for commenting on our channel Ian and yes most definitely cheaper especially now with the cost of materials. 👍🏻
