Pretty often these emotional issues are related with creativity because it is a way people learned to cope with life issues, bad family problems, all sorts of trauma. Sublimation. This is an awesome video to have in your list, shows how real and related music is to emotions and our lives. Powerful will come from these feelings, and the more real you are with those feelings and you put them in your music then maybe not only will music come, but insight into why you feel like that. Music can be a way to process it if you're totally honest with it.

I agree. I think I really poured myself into piano when I was a child because my dad would just get angry whenever I tried to talk about anything. I went into myself. Now at 47 I'm still struggling through these things.

Personally, I was one of the students who wrote in, and gave praise to Jesse for briefly mentioning this issue in another video & ultimately was part of the deciding factor to join Sync Academy. I sensed he went through similar personal life struggles that he might not mention upfront out in the open, but obviously he overcame them and probably has done alot of internalization, self mothering & fathering & decided to put together a platform to help others as he wished he had in place for himself. I have similar aspirations in life and therefore I went with my gut, took a chance & told myself that I've spent way more money on less important things. Now I'm grateful so far that I've joined & applaud the fact that he is bringing this sort of issue to light in the self development, creative relativity of the music business because honestly I believe it is VERY real & VERY well could be the the #1 reason why people dont reach their fuller potential in life, be it music or sports, or career aspirations... in general I feel it would be a doing a great service to in fact share what you've learned & what worked for you. Might not fit for everyone, but that knowledge can still be shared by one viewer to someone else in their life who never watched a single video of yours & that could create positive ripples & waves in the world & universe where you had no clue your story would ever have had any influence! By all means, carry on! Cheers bro

I struggle with this so much. This is the first year I haven't been depressed in about ten years. I feel like I'm just now living life. Thank you so much for speaking on the subject as most people do not understand this. My old soundcloud account had 8k followers, and during a bout of depression I deleted my account... I was enveloped in the darkness for longer than I care to admit. This year is the first year i was put on a medication that actually helped. I'm so thankful I found your videos. This is the best year of my life and you're leading me to success. Thank you Jesse. ❤

Thanks for sharing this, Jesse. The physical manifestations of stress, anxiety and depression are absolutely real, and can be very scary at times. To speak to anxiety/panic specifically: That feeling of dread, that you're going to pass out or die, can be terrifying. And then you notice your heart racing, or your clammy hands, which creates more anxiety, which intensifies the sensations, which makes you more anxious. It's a self-perpetuating cycle. Like you said, the best thing to do is notice it, observe it for what it is, and just allow it to wash over you. Fighting it will make it worse. Knowing what it is - and that it's fairly common and non-life-threatening - will help you enter a calmer state and let it pass. There was a period several years ago where I was getting panic attacks somewhat regularly. They slowly went away once I began the practice of going with the flow and remaining as calm as possible. Nowadays it's rare but I'll still get the occasional attack, although anxiety is still a major issue for me. Along with addressing those external stressors (jobs, finances, etc), getting enough sleep is absolutely essential. So is good nutrition and staying hydrated. Physical exercise helps a TON, which I was also lacking. I also found a free "Breathing App" which basically counts for you while you breathe in and out slowly for several minutes. Look up "resonance breathing" for a scientific explanation of why it works to reduce stress and anxiety. It's no secret that meditation, yoga, etc. are beneficial and what they all have in common is the incorporation of mindful breathing. It honestly helps and we should all be doing it regularly. Best of all, it's easy and only takes a few minutes. Thanks again for the video, and anyone suffering from panic attacks please know that 1) you aren't alone; 2) you aren't going to die; and 3) you don't have to fear them. Taking care of yourself can make them stop coming around, but if they do you'll be prepared to handle them. Hopefully, as in my case, they'll eventually stop altogether. Lastly, Jesse posted a live stream video related to this topic, "Get Your Health Right First." It's a must-watch if you're dealing with any of these issues. Take care of your body, and your mind will follow, so creativity can flow through you unencumbered. Good luck everyone!

Thank you for this. A lot of creatives have so much stuff streaming in their mind. This is an important part of your mission statement. Good health, sleep, exercise and mental health. I got help by going to a Therapist due to severe anxiety and stress. Helps to talk to someone who gets it. Also, mindfulness and meditation with breathing techniques absolutely help me to calm the limbic system, the subconscious flight-fight-freeze response. Observe the problem, don't judge it, watch and allow it to pass. Seek help, do NOT go solo, don't keep away from people, or keep your pain from everyone! You will get through and you will create beauty from the pain. Ask for help if you're deeply depressed, your are NOT alone!

Jesse, This is an excellent subject to tackle for the group. I feel certain that a great many of us, as creatives, are susceptible to depression, anxiety, etc. I know I have dealt with them for the greater portion of my life, including OCD which has been debilitating in the past. I was into my thirties before I knew there was even a name for my condition. So, by all means, please continue in this vein from time to time. It is quite brave and shows a rare spirit of honesty and empathy sorely lacking in public discourse these days.

I’m totally with you on this one. Anxiety and severe panic attacks stole 10 years of my life. It was truly horrible to deal with, but I’ve not suffered from them at full scale in the last 25 years, however I can still feel them in the dark corners now and again. Your advice on this topic is on point and I’m sure a lot of people will benefit from it. Thank you for sharing 😊

Thank you, Jesse. It is interesting how recognizing that you're in a depressive episode can help arrest it. Of course that gets a lot easier over the years. I've struggled with depression for most of my adult life (35 years). The last 10 have been the hardest. But now, I'm really for the first time feeling that I have a way forward, to make something positive out of my life.

Important for sure. Had my first panic attack about 4 years ago...Didn't know what was happening and went to the hospital as well. Since then, I've had one or two additional...but at least now I recognize what it is and reassure myself by saying "breathe...breathe...you're ok"....and that helps a ton. Appreciate you sharing!

Thank you for sharing, Jesse. I used to battle with very serious panic attacks on a consistent basis. I started to make ground when I stopped being afraid of the attack and/or what people would think about me if they found out what I was going through. I also pray a lot and have learned some solid slow breathing techniques that have helped when I start feeling one come on. It definitely helps people to know they are not alone so I think using your platform for these types of videos every now and again is a solid idea. Cheers!

What's helped me is keeping my mind busy: learning more about my DAW, music theory, experimenting with various virtual instruments. Closing off from the world at large for a bit can help; however, I still reach out to some friends via text to kinda Wade through that state of feeling... Sometimes a small epiphany or joke changes the mood & it helps progress things along.

I have had OCD my whole life and have been prone to bouts of depression. Luckily it seems to have calmed down, but back in college I was in such bad shape that I'd go to one class and then sleep all day--on the floor in the hallway, right inside my front door. A mentor at the time told me something that at first seemed painfully obvious, but it ended up getting me through a lot of tough times, and it was simply, When you're depressed you're going to have good days and bad days. Just that tiny little piece of knowledge helped get me through the bad days. I thought I'd put it in a comment here in case it helps someone else get through their bad days too.

Jesse, thank you for this video, it hit the nail right on the head. Also was hospitalized for anxiety depression and panic attacks about 6 months ago... came out just wanting to write music again after not picking up a guitar for over a year. I found you a few months back and of curiosity, stuck with watching your vids. Tuned in and subbed, eager for anything you put out. Fast forward and lately all I've been talking or thinking about or doing is improving my music crafting every day so that I can also join the syndicate some day soon. Making a career out of music, however large or small, would be a dream come true. Thank you for sharing your struggles and dream with me, and all of us. You blazed the trail ahead and lit the beacon and now I can see far up the road... thank you my friend.

Great video Jesse. It is essential to exercise. It's been proven to help with depression. Also diet is something to addtess : go easy on the sugar, pasta bread, foods that come in a bag. No Bagels muffins Danish for breakfast. Dr. Mark Hyman's site is a good start. Vitamin D deficiency is high among people who suffer from depression and anxiety. I feel so much better since I started taking it. The book " The War of Art" by Steven pressfield helps shed light on the issue of resistance. Another book "The Tools- Coming Alive" Michaels & Stutz give exercises to help us remove resistance. I'm currently reading it as I'm always looking for methods to keep me inspired. Love your channel thanks for all you do. May the Good Force be with all of us!

Gotta mind the peaks as well as the valleys. When you’re down seems like you’ll never be up again and when you’re up, you abandon all precaution of going down. Being mindful and present can be difficult for creatives because it requires such a grounding focus that isn’t the most desirable state of being for most creatives. We thrive on imagination and that blessing comes with a curse. The mind is a vast expanse of exploration. It simply can’t all be bright and cheery all the time. There are dark places the mind will go to. Learning to face these places and explore them equally to the positives can fuel a whole new product of creativity or even an elevated relationship with your creative nature.

Thank you so much. You've really helped me. Not boasting at all but being of a creative mind can and often is hard to manage and deal with. The extreme of emotions from far left to far right is exhausting. The high ups and very low downs can often cause havoc on oneself thus the anxiety , the anxiousness and stress. And friends and significant others not being able to handle our moods and unique thoughts often times just makes one feel more distant and cursed. Only when they hear my music for a brief moment I feel that they might kind of understand me.

Man, this is a huge topic to deal with!! I'd like to write about it coming up with lots of solutions in psychologically spiritual values seeking balancing things as I saw many loved ones faded away ,stars dropped down into the dark celebs ended up in the roadside ditch esp, in musicians singers mostly who use the emotions sentimental things a lot!! To me, I started going into musical world in a sense of patriotic a bit of political aims. I was born in northern Kachin state of Burma now, Myanmar as we Christians minority youth were systematically lured misled into drugs alcohols and shut all the educational progress by the Buddhist majority military group till now, I was just sobered up from drugs at 16 and I knew I must do Sth for our teens at least and I checked my own talents which can be used and I did martial arts karate pretty well and was good at playing and understanding guitars of rock bands and I used both talents to organize teenagers, and it turned out the guitar rock bands was widely accepted and I, by their request, started teaching the notes guitars with do re mi fa 1234 short hands of staff notes which I finished classical church music from Baptist school and translated all paul McCartney song books to easy reading enjoyable own style notes from 5 kids to over 1000 students in 5 years I had formed 40 bands in lead bass rhythm drum category, I made it in my first objective!! Now my point is I knew that my mindsets sensitivity emotional sensational behavior all changed, they called it 'Artist characteristic guy', and I passed whole lot of things you mentioned always worried thinking ocean wide views on small petty items, in fact before this path journey I was kind of pragmatic logical tough rough fighting guy but after all those years i even felt suicidal things easy becoming low self-esteem in life ups and downs ! Now, Looking back on kids I taught of the music, many of them became good incomes or celebs in musical careers, lots of them couldn't stand "This " what we mentioned, I barely survived from carrying the world on my shoulder and i am still alive now, and people don't understand us who are musicians and label us even make matters worse by spouse relatives wives closed ppl surrounded, now my solutions times - support each other liked minded in the same boat which you already have done, -involve as much as we could in down to earth no nonsense only business wise work activities and persons, which needed to read lots of books and consult the experts on mental subjects - moving even little very slow joggong, starting good habits of exercises if possible mild martial arts karate that can give you fighting sports again to all devils , most of all seek find spiritual values ,be it yoga self talked breath in out or esp, singing praising groups in Christianity, turn deaf ears on nay Sayers on musicians singers! If the loved ones who are celebs and who are in the last stage like Elvis hooked on drugs alcohols just put strong sleeping pills in their drinks and just them to the best appropriate rehab which, not allowed the patients to leave the locked boundary at least 2 months, then we would have more chance to see him alive 2 more years as ppl in this stage receive themselves think they're right, in fact they're not at all!! Well sorry I just open a piece of 1/10 of my chest, sorry again if it's helpful I'll be glad, Kevin thank you for your sharing, peace brother.

Thanks for making videos like this, it really sets you apart from the rest. Real talk right here. The only thing is at the end you mentioned something about not needing medication, which is something I wish people wouldn't be ashamed of. During a routine exam, my doctor screened me for depression and I ended up with a prescription for sertraline. I figured I'd take it temporarily and get off in a few months. I took it and felt a weightlessness I hadn't felt since I was a kid. Things just happened because life happened, and they weren't all crises anymore. Had no idea I'd been depressed for that long! I'm really grateful for that experience so that I could remember what peace and contentment are supposed to feel like. I think of depression like a cold. You just have to let it pass. You can do things to help you heal quicker. Some supplements might help. If it gets worse, you might have to go to the doctor and get a prescription, but it won't cure you, just help you fight it. Some people get so sick that they end up in the hospital. Some people get sick more often than others. Some of that immunity is within your control, and some is just biological. That's how I see it, personally.

I think it's good that you addressed this. It seems like you're unsure about making more of this kind of content available. It takes time, may be a distraction, goes off course,... Perhaps, instead of having lots of videos dedicated to it, there is another solution. Maybe a Skype/Facetime/Zoom session once a week where people who need it can tune in together and talk. It would be best with someone running it - you or even someone else. I admit I've never participated in things like this before but I've had my share of depression and panic attacks too.

This is real stuff man I been through depression real hard around the time of being in a relationship... it came down to her social being not fitting my personality, things weren't working out and I didn't get it and she didn't get it either. Got to a point where I got a really bad panic attack, I got so desperate I had my sister drive me to a psychiatric cell, not even an office. To then be told I needed therapy from a psychologist not a psychiatrist. I have dealt with depression a lot and I think is got to do with the creative mind. Since I recognize it more mow I don't go through it as bad as before. But yes this is a really important topic because people can be going through it without knowing how to deal with it and it can affect themselves and others around them.

I have dealt with anxiety and panic attacks for years and your method is exactly what has worked for me. It’s about balance and appreciating (as much as we can) every bit of it. I learned about this feeling through family and friends over the years but not in a very real dark way till about a year ago with a seriously eye opening Heath event i experienced. Your suggestions on coping are very earnest and hit home. Thanks bro. On a creative note, i find it really interesting your point on identifying the emotion in order to face our problems/fears, because the parallel is... what are we asked to summon when we compose? An emotion. Totally ties in with keeping our tracks focused and bringing our intended listeners on an emotional journey. So when we retract out of our funk, it can be an excersize that we carry on into our Productions as well as processing the good times while we're there too. Keep em coming brother and looking fwd to talking soon!

This is one of the reasons why I choose not to make music as a profession. I know, there are some people who have put their heart and soul into something they love, fail, and hate the very thing they used to love because they didn't get their desired result. If you truly love the arts, do it because you love it and not because you're expecting to gain some commercial and/or financial success.
