Some days I just need to come up with an alternative way to solve a problem caused by a failure to fully understand how a fixture needs to be installed. Not everyone can afford to start over and redo a tub & tile.
This bathtub was continually having the caulking crack or pull away permitting moisture to get by. I discovered that the tub was not correctly secured and supported then I discovered that the tile work was started above the bathtub mounting flange leaving a gap between the tub and the tile.
My solution is to kinda copy how baseboard and trim are done to cover gaps WHILE having the tub full of water until the silicones can fully cure. Once everything dries and the water weight is released the idea is that the silicone will compress rather than the opposite which is to pull away or open up when weight is put into the bathtub.
The trim is PVC and has been adhered to the tile and not the tub in order to permit the tub to move when it needs to. The gap was first filled with a clear silicone while the tub is full of water. The PVC was sanded to give the silicone(s) something to grab onto. The trim is not siliconed to the tub because that would make it move with the tub and eventually come loose from the stress & movement.
