Thank you for articulating what I have felt for a while. It’s even harder for smaller accounts trying to grow a following because content gets seen less. I used to get posts way out perform the 450 subs I had because they were good content and it got me discovered. Now I don’t even get seen by my followers and the content is just as good if not better. IG has lost its way, it’s watered down what it did well and doesn’t support creators

90% of the photos in my explore are just reposts, mostly without mentioning the OP. Why would I bother posting when someone else is just going to repost it with a bigger following, even when they quote the OP it's often buried in a wall of text, after they credit their own @s for "discovering", and I *might* get one extra "like" from someone who dug deep enough to find my original post.

this happened to me a few times, a page reposted one of my images without credits or asking for permission. in an instance they even claimed copyrights to that image. all I had to say was " well I guess you have the RAW file of that image, right?". they ended up taking it down. these pages (unless they are legit communities) try to build another user's account by claiming "he/she" discovered the image. they never mention the OP.

Instagram said they were going to stop this, yeah right. And a lot of the reposters are companies or account sellers. You just see streams of ads, silly reels or reposts. They reward quantity over quality. I search out so many artists and illustrators because I want to see things that make me feel inspired. But it’s hard for these people to grow because they can’t post often enough because they can’t create fast enough. And if they did create fast enough the art starts to really decrease in quality and no one will want to follow. On the flip side TikTok is pushing even the smallest creators if they think a user will like the content. Instagram pushes the people who are posting the most, which is businesses and like you said when you post it feels like no one sees it. It just goes into the ether

Honestly, I think the reason TikTok does so well is that discovery of new content is the primary way to use the app. I open up TikTok and I get my "for you page" which is an endless stream of algorithm-filtered content. I open up Instagram and I get a feed of content filtered to just the people and tags I follow. There's no direct funnel to get people to see your content without some extra effort on their part (like following a tag). There's no reason a "for you page" needs to be limited to video content, it would most likely work just as well for photo content too, but I don't think mixing them would work well.

Holy moly. All this talk of algorithms makes me crazy. I know this is the world we live in now but man, I just can't keep up. I agree with you on the point you made 'who actually sees the stuff I put up' - now, I don't have any where near the amount of subscribers that you do, so I can't really compare but I do think that regardless of one's follower figures, reaching new people is pretty damn hard (through any social media platform). If you'd like another rant.. There comes a point for any aspiring creator wanting to broaden their reach - especially with KZitem as they are one of the only platforms that financially support creators - where the decision to effectively create for free for years (with the hope that it will pay off one day) or sell an actual hard copy CD / sell a painting / teach / do a gig.. 'Cause let's face it, if you're a musician (like me) I would receive more money selling one album than I would in 6 months of streams on Spotify. I don't have anywhere near a respectable number of subscribers of KZitem to even justify my typing but if I did, I would still only receive a fraction through KZitem compared to what I would playing an actual gig. The issue in my mind is that we, as consumers, are watching shorter and shorter content, low-fi, hand held and quite often, crappy content and literately barely registering it as it's gone before you've even got to the end of a 30 second clip. The opportunities to share high quality, professionally produced content is pretty much a loose loose exercise (if you're wanting to be paid by the platform) I realize that this all sounds pretty defeatist but from a 15 year + professional musician who, like thousands of others has seen their industry not only fall off a cliff due to Covid but systematically devalued by streaming platforms. We're just buying into it all because it's 'what everyone uses'. On the Covid front' social media usage has gone through the roof yet we (the creators) are seeing very little (or in most cases, nothing). It's pointless of me to say because I know hundreds of others in my position - I think I create half decent work. I'm proud of everything I put up online. I (usually) spend more than 30 seconds making it. In the case of my last video I made, I spent a day planning, shooting, and editing, two days making the track and about an hour uploading the thing. Sure, I would like to say I wasn't doing it for the 'likes' but honestly, after a day of it being up, I realised just how much time I spent making it that it made me a little sick to think that I'd just 'given all that work away (for 'likes' or not). Now, sure, you don't get anywhere by taking stuff down but feeling like I'd just basically shot myself in the foot by giving my work away makes me want to switch off. Go 'old skool' (if that even exists any more). I appreciate the sentiment Chris, and to know that people with your influence and reach are challenging the platforms. I fear we're so far down the slippery slope that for anyone to truly believe that we as artists / creators will get their due, they'll be waiting for a very long time. B

Absolutely fair comments and not a rant, Instagram makes no content of it's own, every third feed post is a paid for ad and yet creators get...nothing. this has always been the Facebook groups attitude to business (we own your content and there's nothing you can do about it) and it has indeed created toxic platforms that are barely usable. But, because they have such a huge market share, we're all afraid to just ditch them and go elsewhere. (Let's not go into how if your brand falls outside of Instas pretty strict promotion framework, you can't even BUY ads to promote your feed.)

also , some of the features, like Reels aren't available to all accounts. I'm in the Caribbean and I still don't have access to that feature.

In my case, i'm a starting photographer and I hate instagram's reach so much, but I stay because "supposedly" there are lots of users there and I just don't know where could I post my work and for it to reach new people, etc =(

What would you recommend for photographers who don’t dabble in video content? Where should we take our stills? Thank you. Love your channel.

Well said. I ditched Facebook and I'm ready to ditch Instagram as well. Not sure where else to go at this point tho.
