There's one thing forgotten!😅 That is, on the animal features, in order for the animal to have that feature, why does it need it? For example, on the Primate example you gave, it has a big build and thick white/transparent fur for camouflage. But as you said, it lives in a cold climate. For an animal to survive in a cold climate, it needs to stay warm, and fur is not enough, it also needs fat. Especially for such a large animal. So instead of being muscular, it needs to be fat. Why do ducks have webbed feet? It provides them the ability to explore more places to find more food. Why does the Stegosaur have those backplates? So that the blood vessels in those plates can easily be cooled by the cold air and then circulates it when the body gets too warm.

That classification system is outdated and not based on genetic relatedness but it still works it just im a huge nerd. Crocodilians are more related to birds than other reptiles and fish is a term based on physical characteristics and not relatedness since a goldfish is more related to a horse than it is to a shark. as usual this information should only be applied to fantasy. Realistically animals on other planets will not fall into the same categories and will have their own bone structures. Alien animals that could be classed as invertebrate would be more common than ones that could be classed as vertebrate and other classes may show up as well such as animals with an internal skeleton but no spine. The adaptations we see on earth would recur but with entirely unexpected results. You would be more likely to find a hoofed salamander-starfish with a unicorn horn than a giant blue horse with antennae. The animal's natural function in the wild would be one we are familiar with. I doubt there are a great many ecological niches that we haven't already seen or that can't at least be compared to a similar one we are familiar with. Usability as well would be the same with the exception of things like symbiotes who's function is either to enhance an ability of the host like an infinite steroid or provide access to an ability the host doesn't naturally possess. Please do not follow advice on fantasy creatures when designing for science fiction. We need more Darwin IVs and fewer Pandoras, Tatooines, Qonoses...

I created a cross between a horse and a wolf. I wanted to find the correct balance. I noted how their heads have a similar structure, so I pulled the mouth on the horse way back to where the teeth end, like a dog, and gave it sharp teeth. Instead of loping like an ungulate, the horse sprints in a doglike fashion with legs similar in structure to those of a wolf. Its back curves upward towards the end and it has a long bushy tail which wags instead of a horse tail. At the end of its legs there are paws with very large and sharp claws instead of hooves. Other than that, the creature has the features of a horse in its neck, facial and bone structure other than its spine, and the sounds it makes are some hell-wrought contortion between a howl and a neigh. I'm happy with the outcome and I think it's a nice balance. It helps, if you're doing what I'm doing and creating some strange cross between two unlikely creatures, if you find ones that look alike.

While i loved this video as it's imteresting and very helpful with animal concepts and design, you doesn't account for creative mashups of say, mammals and reptiles, or more complicated animals with insects. Perhaps you can make another video explaining these sort of concepts. The Avatar movie's large hexapedal organisms for example, clearly the designers used insectlike features (six legs and some antennaelike appendages) on more complicated and much larger mammalian or reptilian organisms. Thank You for this video!
@totallycarbon2106
5 жыл бұрын
I think the point is those kind of mashups are unrealistic, at least not earthlike. These reptilian features developed independently of mammalian ones, you could trace it back to a common ancestor but at that point the distinct features that make one a reptile or one a mammal aren't there. If you want to break these rules for the sake of fantasy, go ahead, with excuses like being an on an alien planet with a complex different taxonomic system or creatures being explicitly designed by mad scientists or gods, then go ahead. But those creatures won't be believable earthlike creatures and so will fall into the problems presented at the start of the video.

Your lesson is quite good, but example creature is wery illogical. At first warm-blooded animal with the rhino size will need a lot of food per week, which is not simple to found in cold climate habitat. And i don't think that in cold climate will be deciduous trees with big branches, that can hold rhino size ape. Also apes are usualy omnivores, and the main part of thier diet are fruits, that isn't growing in cold climate, and assuming that your ape is predator, it doesn't have elongated jaw with good developed fangs or claws ( which is also prevents to climb trees). About camouflage: warm-blooded animal can't wait a rare prey (because of poor diversity of cold climate species) for a long time, aspecialy if they specialization is tree climbing, and ground is the "enemy territory". About transportation: considering, that apes are prone to upright walking, riding this animal will be a nightmare for any insane person, who is want to saddle rhino size ape with high intelligence that can kill him with one light slap. By the way, small jaw, big skull, transition from a tree lifestyle to ground, and adverse conditions were the reasons that caused human evolution, and your creature has a nice chances to master a simple tools,learn how to use fire and probably create a civilization (sure if they was a social apes at the beginning). I hope you enjoyed reading this, sorry for my bad language ( i am not a native speaker) i wish you to have creative success, learn, study and teach others, good luck.

There's a problem with your title because the first two things you're saying are wrong. This not how you divide animals with a realistic classification. Birds are reptiles and don't get me started with the fish category... I will watch the rest of the video. But it is annoying to me because the title made me think you will use real biology Edit : I ended up de-voting the video because it lacks realism at all levels and creativity at the point it's supposed to be creative (no point using earth classification and restricted oneself to it if it's a new creature.) Your example is really disappointing. You gave your ape strong and linear walking bones and decided it was good at climbing. But you gave him no chance to be able to do that. Wasn't it the whole point of your video ? Awesome graphics, though. I suggest looking at speculative biology to understand more of the topic. It shines through your work that you grasp some of the concept, but you need to put more work into it before releasing a tutorial. Good luck out there, have a great day

I like the video, but there are a couple of problems that might need addressing. But, for those lazy people, TL;DR - just draw from life. Draw insects, spiders, wolves, or whatever animal you're interested in from reference. Start making guidelines and construction lines for how to re-create them, and PRACTICE! That's the best learning you can ever get. Anyways, critique time! Firstly, focusing on just vertebrates is very limiting for an artist's potential. Ideally, when studying animals, you want to study as many as you can and add them to your library. Arthropods, cephalopods, or even looking at fungi or plants for inspiration! Life can adapt in a plethora of ways, and the more variety you add to your library of animals, the more you can work with and expand upon. Secondly, while comparing two species is a decent idea, you're basically studying two animals at once. The basic idea is to *study* the animal you're trying to understand, and if comparing their bones and muscles to another creature helps you, by all means do it, but sometimes it's simpler to just draw it! Draw its bones, look at them extensively to get a grasp on how they look and how they move. And you don't have to be able to draw every muscle group or every bone in perfect detail, you just need to understand how it moves and how you can construct it. Every artist has different ways of accomplishing this, so find the way that works best for you :) Thirdly, don't think about an animal's trait as how useful it is for humans. Think about how useful it is for the animal. While spider silk may be exceedingly strong and could prove very useful for humans, a spider didn't think to itself one day "Gee, I bet this would be great for those big hoo-mans", it uses that silk to weave a web and catch prey. You might not have to think of an animal's entire evolutionary history, but keeping in mind how a duck uses its webbed feet (Rey Telva goes into greater detail in a comment further below!) and why it has it instead of something else will make your creature more realistic. As a side note, I'm not trying to bash your video or say that it's bad, I'm simply giving a little critique :) really like your art, will surely look at more of your videos!

Very well done. Your animal classification is extremely simplified (Eg, if you ask a taxonomy expert, you'll find that birds are, in fact, reptiles, due to their dinosaur heritage), but it's functional.
@theamziss
5 жыл бұрын
Thankyou! I myself am very fascinated about science, especially evolution. I do want to add, birds are officially classified as birds. But there is also another (less popular) classification model that can be used in which birds and mammals are also reptiles because of their common ancestors. Because this video is focussed on drawing animals, I used the commom classification method that doesn't look at genetics but at fenotype and the way an animal lives :) So a bird can be a bird, but also a reptile. It depends what type of classification you use 😁
@globin3477
5 жыл бұрын
@@theamziss I don't think there's any accepted classification that places mammals as reptiles. The classification I spoke of makes "reptile" a synonym of "sauropsid", the group of tetrapods that contains all reptiles, dinosaurs, and birds. This is the sister group to the synapsids, of which mammals are the only surviving members. Another noteworthy detail is that crocodilians are more closely related to birds than they are to other reptiles, such as lizards. That said, while I tend to prefer taxonomical descripions, the conventional systems are entirely functional for most purposes.

I had an idea for a fictional world where people would use giant wolves like horses. They would have the same spinal structure as a horse, to support a human being, and huge, ox-like muscles to pull weight. They can be very loyal and can defend themselves from many things, making them good for a bodyguard as well as transport. The bridal made for them can be maneuvered to tighten around their mouth, in case they ever bite, which is rare.

I usually create fantasy creatures literally from the ground up. I will make a quick biosphere and evolve creatures based on what’s available, and the most logical designs to survive in a given environment. Deconstruct the universe, calculate gravity and ground tensile strength, atmospheric density, and whether an organism uses water or ammonia sometimes. Close to every part of a creature should serve a function, and remember that not many creatures evolve to be perfect at a certain task. As long as a creature can survive and reproduce, evolution will keep it; maybe add a minute mutation or 2 every generation or so.

Elephants have human like feet. The other bits of "bones" are just cartilage.

remember to add more than just bone as well!! study the muscular structure of the animal you are drawing, study where fat deposits in the animal (even the most fit of creatures still has fat!!)

Thank you! I am finding ways on how to create a speculative evolution type of thing. Because i'm writing a book, and was setting it on an entirely new planet. Using animals on earth doesn't really feel that realstic, so i'm glad i've seen this video.

Your creatures face is also bright red, meaning it could be used as an illusion of fresh meat. So it could lure in smaller predators to ambush.

In this video everyone should learn how not to draw some creatures properly instead of drawing a creature with heavy body but grows extremely thin legs, or with small wings which can't lift them up but still draw them flying, which is exactly like what pokemon does. I'm glad this video existed! Guys let's learn biology together shan't we *grins

Im from Brazil and 1 month ago i was watching a show where kids made cakes and other foods , and there was a theme which was monsters , and oh man i hated it , some monsters had 8 eyes , others had excessive spikes , one had strange ears , and the monsters backstory , my god i hated the monsters cakes. And this made me change my perspective of how i saw my monsters , i needed to make them realistic , if they are an Earth monster , they need to be tetrapods , have 2 eyes and etc. Meanwhile the alien monsters could have many limbs , many eyes or different skins. So im watching this video to see how i can design my monsters.

You added an extra part to the horse limb that doesn’t exist on both hind and forelimbs (the first ‘rods’). The forelimb joints in order should be shoulder (ball joint) - elbow (forward bending) - wrist (backward) - knuckle (backward). When you look at the skeleton of a horse it can be misleading since from the side the scapula and hip bones are long and thin and therefore look like limb bones but they are not. The shoulder is mounted at the base of the chest, the scapula is relatively stationary and connects to the spine.

Yes now I can finally design my creatures better now wich one to st..... ahhhh yes the giantephant it's a giant elephant that is a transport for war and to carry people and to carry weapons and it's strong but one thing that doesn't make sense is that it can carry a full on fortress on top it's back I mean it's a giant elephant but it's the size of a two story modern house but a fortress that is the size of a sailing yatch doesn't make sense but one thing that does it can carry a cruiser on it's back like a small cruiser that makes much more sense but I should actually start off with my titan yeti it's just a gorilla that is 7 ft and 8 inches tall that can stand on it's feet and go on all fours but I now have to fix it because there's three things that don't make sense the first is that it can bust thru five lairs of metal at once with concert in between the second is that it can leap high up like 2 meters and the third is that it can survive a nuclear blast and yeah now I see why most if my ideas aren't great because they have a design flaws but thanks for the help now it's back to square one with all my creature designs
