🙋♀️ big credit card churners here. My husband is super organized with it, he does a ton of research and keeps an actual spreadsheet with all of the data (when we signed up, type of card, reward, when the annual fee is due if applicable, when we intend to cancel it, etc.). We have taken numerous vacations with free or nearly free flights and fancy resorts, and our credit scores are great. My “always open” card is my Target card. You are right, though, you have to be highly disciplined and organized to do this. Love this video!

You can max your card every month, as long as you pay it down to less than 10% by the statement date. Credit card companies want to see that you're using your limit (or close to it), which is why they'll increase your limit. However, credit bureaus want to see a low utilization (10% or less), which is how you raise your score. I put all my bills on my credit cards so I get the points and just pay with the money I was going to use for bills anyway

I'm 62 and I don't have any credit cards!! I just bought a new 2020 used car with a credit score of 780-800 and an interest rate of 2.75! I bought a house in 2006! I have a very small overdraft loan that will be paid off soon. I have had a credit card a long long time ago and I hate them. I am terrible with them and I hate the astronomical interest rates!! I never have any trouble buying things so far! Don't fall into the credit card trap... it's not worth the stress and the way they suck up any money that can get from you! I'm not perfect with my finances but I am on a mission to learn and make improvements! It can be done! Thanks for your advice and opinion because that's how we learn when we share our experiences!

Agree on all points. The "advanced credit card user" that you mention in your video has to have the self-discipline in order to be able to make this work. I think Dave is really addressing those who don't have the self-discipline and therefore can't use credit cards effectively and control their spend in the process.

Great video! Loved about adding kids to get their credit score started. We got over 800 quick when we started out, but ours wasn’t as strict as that. We never went over 50% of limit (but usually did 30-40%) we’ve never had debt other than mortgage, so we paid off our one card every month. Then when we got out of college, we had excellent credit for buying a house! We had 800+ in under 10 years. Just to give hope, it doesn’t have to be 25 years (I’m 35 and we have had 800+ for at least 11 years, started when I was 20)

Definitely agree that credit cards can be used to your benefit, but only if you know yourself and know you will pay them off every month. Getting 3-5% cash back on purchases is an automatic discount on everything you buy. I like Ramsey but his one size fits all approach misses out on opportunities for people who can stay disciplined.

When I was 19 I applied at my bank for a student loan and was denied because I didn't have a well established credit history. I had to drop out of the university I was planning to go to because grants didn't cover everything and I couldn't afford the rest. I went to a much cheaper community college and thankfully started a different career than planned not long after. I would definitely like to help my children avoid issues like this as a young adult. Getting their credit history going by adding them to my credit card sounds like a good idea.

Love the advice here. One thing I might add though is if you get 2-3 cards early on it'll help build your score a bit faster since you accumulate more on time payments. And it'll also keep your score from dropping as much when you open new cards since your average age of account will be longer. It's definitely more hassle to keep track of three cards long term, but it can be advantageous.

Agree completely Christine- Having multiple credit cards definitely gave us benefits and still does and really if you’re going to travel or make big purchases that is one of the best deals that you can get I did something similar for Disney World a few years back and the great thing is let’s say you get an airline credit card as the promotion credit card they not only waive The annual fee They can also waive the baggage fees so you’re saving a ton of money right there. All we do is pay it off every month so whenever you make any purchases you think OK can I still afford this pay in cash out of pocket yes then purchase and that’s the only reason we would use that then just make sure to put the date before renewal on your calendar so you can ensure to cancel the card before The next annual fee comes due. Also sometimes the reps can offer you a downgrade for a free no annual credit card with the same company if there is such an existing thing if you so choose so that’s a benefit to keep your credit open as well

Thanks for this information. I keep getting airline offers, but I was under the impression it would lower my credit quite a bit for seven years (like you, mine is high and I want to keep it that way). For years I've had the same two credit cards, but I might close one of them because they dropped all the perks like free comprehensive auto insurance on rental cars, and 2% back at restaurants, which use to save us quite a bit when renting cars, and get some money back while dining out. Ugh. Neither of my cards charge a yearly service, though. I wont do that, but I will start opening my eyes to the airline cards. YAY!

My credit score is 914/1000 - yes, 1000 is the max in Australia. Pretty happy with that. I do have a credit card. It has no annual fees ever, and the interest rate is irrelevant because I pay it off each month. So bank doesn't earn anything from me at all.

After nearly a decade without a credit card I decided to make the plunge. We needed a new dishwasher anyways early this year and with the $200 bonus if you spend $1000 in the first 3 months....yes please I'd like $200 off my new dishwasher. And now through the end of December they're giving 5% cashback on all Walmart purchases - where I buy my groceries and some Christmas presents! Kinda cool to get those rewards! (paid in full each month of course). I think in the new year I'm going to look for airline miles so we can finally go on a family trip. After being a strict Dave Ramsey follower for years, yeah, you do actually need a credit score, sorry Dave. Thanks Christine and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Completely agreed. Good advice. Personally i am sticking with the Chase and A/E ecosystem. Just to add to what you said, credit cards do change. Companies will stop supporting a certain type of credit card after a while. If the entire type of CC you got is no longer available because the CC company decides to change it, for whatever reason, and it gets automatically cancelled, then so does your credit. Also, yes, correct in that two of my CCs were cancelled due to "lack of use." Had I bought even a kit-kat bar with it once a year, my credit score would probably be 50 points higher.

G'day from Australia! I LOVE credit cards too - like a lot of people they were vital when we first got married and had to set up a house of course you end up spending a lot but we never paid a late fee on it - we now cannot live without it - we pay it off at the end of every month (because the interest rate is 17% on our card), every single dollar is budgetted for and we get reward points - we get double points for food shopping and at the end of the year we get back $600 - $1000 depending on what we have spent - we can process most bills with it if there's no fee and so it's totally worth it. Yes we pay a yearly fee of approx $74 but the first year was waved and every few years we look at other cards and rewards. We don't focus a lot on our credit score here in Australia.

I do believe that the idea of not ever using credit card is very outdated in this age. Do credit cards take more discipline? Yes. But for those who are careful with their spending credit cards offer amazing perks. We pay our credit card to pay for everything except our mortgage. I pay the balance as soon as transactions hit, so I basically use it as a debit card. The cash rewards we get in a year are worth it. Free money for Christmas? Travel? We always pay it off at the end of the month and never ever carry a balance.
