Informative and clear! Thank you very much, I was wondering though when it comes to debit cards vs credit cards and whether the benefits of the credit card are really worth it. For example, with the debit card I can pretty much do the same thing as a credit card (the safety aspect of it is the same). The only difference then seems to be building credit rating (which seems more like a secondary effect rather than an actively useful function of the card) and the rewards/benefits/discounts you might get from a credit card. Initially I thought the main benefit of a credit card would be that you could pay off something in monthly installments, paying it full at the end of each month still seems redundant to me when I could just use a debit card/cash like you mentioned in the vid.
@fj5snow
7 жыл бұрын
That's exactly what I recommend, using your credit card like you would a debit card (already having the money in your account to pay for the purchase / pay it off). The debit card pulls from your account immediately, the credit card let's you do it at the end of the month, but you get rewards for spending on the credit card, you build your credit rating by paying it on time, and some places even charge a fee for using debit over credit. In my opinion, the extra step of paying it off at the end of the month is worth it for all the other benefits you get. Thanks for watching and commenting!

+Karen Rojas I'm glad it helped! :) Yes, you only pay interest if you have an outstanding balance on your account and you're late on your payments. No, you don't have to spend all the $500 every month. That's just the max you're allowed to spend, but you can spend any amount up to that. If you don't spend it all, then it stays available. I hope that answers all your questions. Let me know if you have any more. Take care and enjoy your credit card responsibly!

I never wanted to get a credit card ever, and i was never going to, it just seemed like setting myself up for a headache. but the truth is almost any big purchase out there, they want to check you credit score. And when you have no score at all it's almost impossible to be approved for a credit card but to build a credit score in the first place you need a credit card (kind of the Chicken or the Egg situation) . there is very little options out there for people who like to just pay in full.All in all i think the system is flawed, so this is a really good advice for me, I get to build my credit score and also peace of mind that I won't be drowning in debt latter.

The reason why I like my debit card is because it will take out what I've spent right then so I know what I have in my checking. With credit cards, I would have to keep a mental or physical record of what I've spent so I know I shouldn't spend over that limit. I have to keep a minimum amount of money in my checking account to avoid charges. So would I have to pay it off immediately to avoid having to keep a physical note of what I spent?
@fj5
9 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is definitely important to keep track of your monthly spending to ensure you do not spend more than you actually have. You can also use your credit limit to control your spending because once you reach that limit, the credit company will no longer allow you to use the card. And yes, you could choose to pay off your card after every transaction but in my opinion, that doesn't seem very convenient. There are apps out there that can also help you keep track of your spending, maybe you can try those. I hope that helps!

To me the entire point of using credit cards is to build your credit score. The higher the credit score the lower the credit rate you have when buying stuffs especially autos and mortgages. There are many way to improve your credit score including paying bills on time, keeping your balance below 50% of the credit line, paying your utilities, and etc... I've been building my credit score since high school and now at 23 years old I got a brand new Audi at an amazing APR. Using a credit card can be tedious especially when you use multiple credit cards but it's really worth it in the long run.

@fj5snow
9 жыл бұрын
+Sean Harris Thanks for your question! You really should aim to pay off the entire balance when it's due, especially if you want to build your credit rating and minimize your interest charges. The interest may not be visible at lower outstanding balances and it depends on the credit card. The interest may be compounding monthly or worse, daily. If you're curious about the interest charges not showing up on your statement, it's best to call your credit card company and inquire with a customer service representative. Let us know how it goes!

You only need to put money towards your credit card if you used it (ex. you owe it back to VISA for borrowing for your purchases). The $400 is the maximum you're allowed to spend on the card. if you haven't spent it, you keep the $600 in your bank where it was direct deposited.

thankyou for replying back. what i mean is the actual math. i.e. the 22.9% interest on what ever you spend on card. I just recieved my very first credit card. Its $300 and $75 is cash I can get back at an atm. so far since I've have the card I paid back what i spent which was $35, when i could've just paid the monthly $25 they said i have to pay monthly. i thought it would be wise to just pay back what i spent instead of the $25. Do you have any suggestions or advice for me? Thank you!
@fj5snow
8 жыл бұрын
I recommend to everyone to pay the bill in full every month to avoid any interest charges. The minimum payment they suggest is just to allow the card to stay active but you still collect interest on the remaining balance. So, pay it in full every month on time. I also recommend that you avoid using cash advance (ex. at the atm). The reason is because you start paying interest right away once you withdraw the cash, on top of any service admin fees. I avoid paying any additional fees / costs / charges on top of what I'm actually spending on the card with my purchases. Doing this, you avoid the math altogether, doesn't matter what the interest rate is. The math only matters if you do not pay your bill on time or if you use cash advance. It can differ depending on the card but for example sake, 22.9% interest annually, so divide by 12, you'll be charged 1.9083% every month on your outstanding balance on the bill's due date. The cash advance is worse because it starts accumulating interest on day 1 (upon withdrawal). I hope that makes sense!

+shawn rosario Eligibility can vary quite a bit depending on what you're looking for. There are so many different offerings out there. Maybe it would be a good idea to go to your current financial institution (bank) to see what they have to offer and what you qualify for. Then you can make your comparisons with other bank offerings. VISA pretty much accepted everywhere. MasterCard is also widely accepted. Although American Express isn't accepted in as many places, I still like them for their benefits and customer service and rewards programs and you can still use it in many big stores. I hope that helps! Best of luck!

It’s true. People do spend less with cash, but people also spend less when they have gold only to spend. The thing is, if you are a fucking idiot that seriously has problems understanding the cardinal rule: “buy what you can afford”, you should only uses Cash. But if you are also paranoid that people will steal cash from you, use Debit then. Otherwise, if you are a normal human capable of limit, USE CREDIT. You don’t have to worry about getting stuck in really messy place for not having money to buy something. Or worry about getting stolen. Great for mortgage and all. Basically, if you’re a old man, use cash only. If you’re a teenage girl, use Debit, and if you’re a working man with family, use Credit.

As long as you use the card and pay it on time, you'll build your credit. I do believe there is a minimum amount to spend per month to ensure you continue building your credit but I'm not quite sure how much faster you build your credit with higher spending.

I don't know if you are still active in this channel but I have a question similar to myth 4 I just got my first credit card a discover it card for students and they say that my first statement closes in August 11 and my due date is september 6 im very confused by this do I pay my full balance by august 11 or do I have to pay everything by september 6 before i get charge interest and will it affect my credit score if I pay let say all my fees in September 5th or will it be better to pay early, what would you say would be the best time to pay (date wise). Question 2 : why do I have to pay so early I have only have had this card since august 2nd less than 10 days why do I have to pay the full balance by august 11th doesn't make sense , card I'm using : discover it chrome

Sorry for delayed reply, your comment went in my spam. It just means your statements will be recording your purchases until the 11th of every month and you have until the 6th of the following month to pay that amount. Questions like these are best to ask your credit card company. Just call the number at the back of the card and they can help you with such details. You will receive a detailed statement that will tell you exactly how much you owe and the date that it is due by. Don't worry. Yes, you can pay it off earlier than the due date. I like to do it 2 days before just to make sure the funds go through on time.

You can't set up customized payment schedules with credit cards. They must be paid off monthly to avoid interest charges. Perhaps you can apply for a student loan?

I'm sorry but I'm not really the best person to answer that. I would recommend going to your financial institution (bank) and asking them what they have available to you and then compare those options with other banks. VISA is the most widely accepted card so I would suggest going with one of those with a decent rewards program but no annual fee.

If you only spent $75 for that billing period, you only have to pay back $75 by the due date of that bill. The $500 limit is just how much you're allowed to borrow/spend per period.

One question - say you have a credit card but never used it. Would there be a charge for every month when it's not in use? Even if you you used it once and paid it in full but never used it in a long while?
@fj5snow

Some cards have annual fees just for having it which is kind of like a monthly fee but you pay for 12 months right at the beginning. But some cards are free to have and if you're not using it, you won't get charged any additional fees.

@fj5snow

It will depend on how you set up your statements. The traditional is paper statements that will be sent to you monthly. I use electronic statements to save on paper and I do get email reminders as well. But just make sure you double check with your bank/credit card company. The actual billing date depends on when you sign up / get approved for the card.

Hey Robin, that's a tough one. It's hard for banks to want to grant you a credit card with a higher limit than $500 if you have bad credit history. I'm sorry but I won't be able to help you there. You'd be better off going to your bank and other banks and asking them for some guidance.
@fj5snow
7 жыл бұрын
Jack, I wouldn't recommend relying on a credit card for additional funds to cover your monthly costs/expenses. It really should be looked at as a payment tool, not a source of money. What you really should be trying to do is restructuring your monthly expenses to be lower than your monthly income. I hope that helps!

I just got my Discover It Chrome cards in the mail today, it's typically for students with little to no credit history, so basically (instant approval). It's a start off credit card, but i'm only going to use it for Gas and small purchases. I really don't need a 60 inch TV or Apple Tablet right now. So like the video said, just pay off your balance in full before the end of the month. Let's say you really want Starbucks, use your credit card, and in a week or two, when you get your paycheck from work or however you make money, simply pay it off and you're good.
@fj5snow

It really varies across different institutions. When I first started using credit cards I liked the ones which offered cash back with no annual fees (ex. CIBC VISA Dividend).

Hey Dez, yes you can pay it off as soon as you'd like. That's a common practice as well for some people who want to make sure they don't miss their bill. I personally like to wait until the end of the period so that little bit of money can accumulate that extra little bit of interest in my bank account before I use it to pay off my credit card. I know it's minuscule but that's just me. ^_^
