Hey Michael, I just stumbled on your page and I really appreciated this video in particular. In Vancouver I would say very few of the sound mixers here are using the coms system in this fashion but I prefer the idea of this over our current system of the boom operator using the boom mic for sound team intercommunication. Keep making these videos I’m enjoying your content sir much appreciated.

Thank you 22Sound! I bet the weather is beautiful in Vancouver this time of year, we're still in the 90's by mid day here in Atlanta. I also find that a a handful of mixers here in our market are still using public lines for communication but a lot are starting to transition, makes life so much easier on set when we have all way communication. TV is just too unpredictable, and too fast for any other way.

Michael Wynne I’m starting to agree with you, to be fair, we don’t use the public line for our team since we do have a separate private IFB channel for the team to hear me over the slate mic and for me to send whatever channel or combination is best for them to monitor, but no private talkback from the boom/assist to me or to each other. I heard a great story about The Dark Crystal and the seemingly elaborate setup they used for monitoring coms and dialogue cues, and it was really eye-opening how much planning went into it. Your video was really great for shining a light on a previously confusing setup so thanks once again!

Also today the weather was breathtaking, but we’ve had a lot of grey skies and rain so it’s touch and go in our neck of the woods buddy, I hope you stay dry, warm and well-caffeinated this fall my friend!

Thanks Allen! So you'll appreciate that this is actually a little different since we last time used it. While making the video I realized that there is indeed a headphone RTN available on X5/6 in which I previously thought it was not available on any AUX output forcing me to send to the IFB from the 2nd headphone output. The result is the iFB is now kind of like a pre fade headphone send not affected by volume adjustments and is not longer being driven by the actual headphone amp for slightly cleaner and fatter signal.

Great videos Michael, and very helpful. Any suggestions for a usable Com system based on the 633 (Not all of us have the additional functionality of the 688). I'm currently sending my LR Mix out of the X3 output to the IFB Tx, but my slate mic is audible to everyone on the IFB, and shows up in the recordings - which can be useful from time to time, but certainly not always. What I lack most is a way for my boom op to talk back to me without everyone else hearing. Keep up the great work and I greatly appreciate your willingness to share your experience with those of us who are still learning.

Providing your not using all 6 inputs, you can dedicate one of your inputs as a dedicated crew coms return or as a mic going to just your boom op that can also include the mix, etc. There also may be a way to send a coms input on the return input of the 633, but that depends if you can make a custom headphone input config on the 633 to include the RTN and mix for you.

Hey Michael, was curious if you are able to do something similar to this on a sound devices 633, or mix pre? It seems the only mixers that have "com return" are the 688, 833 and 888

Hi Michael! Thanks for this very informative video! I do have one question though: When you use the X5 output to the crew, you routed it via HP-R. I understand this is for all the production crew to hear whats going on. But if the mixer wanted to talk to the boom op or utility privately by pressing the comm using the slate mic, wouldn't the rest of the crew be able to hear that as well since the signal from the com/slate mic goes to that bus?
@MichaelWynneCAS
4 жыл бұрын
HI Siddarth, With this routing structure you are correct that you would be unable to privately talk to one member of the sound crew and not the other. To do this you'd have to use a separate send and also use a separate IFB TX/RX each on it's own channel. Their could be upsides and downsides to each approach, it all depends upon your particular workflow needs.

Great video. I've worked on a small set as a boom op, and the mixer sent signal to the director, using a 633. I got just the signal from the shotgun mic. It would be cool to discover a way to set up a similar system using lower-priced equipment. Sorry if that's below your level of expertise, but in flyover country we usually don't have that sophisticated of a set up. Still be nice to have a set up like yours.

Scott, I was thinking about this comment. Now with the Mic Pre II expansion and 833 coms could be more common on smaller set ups. At least I hope so.

I saw your soundchat with Curtis and you mentioned that you switched out your G3s to Sony UWPs instead. May I ask what the reason for that was?
@MichaelWynneCAS
5 жыл бұрын
Hi Dustbrigade, Certainly. I was experiencing some interference hits/bursts of nasty white noise on the front end of the G3 receivers that I believe was being caused by all the extraneous RF activity on my current show. It was especially problematic when I was any where near Teradeks. RF scans on the G3 receivers weren’t helping so I switched over to the Sony’s. The new Sony’s are performing much better as far as less interference, also they can take continuous power from a mini USB port and simultaneously trickle charge the rechargeable AA batteries.

Hey! First of all, great channel! Thanks for sharing all your know how! I'm not sure how you managed to get the user defined button to switch headphone presets. I must be missing something obvious but i can't find it... I'd love to be able to switch between two of my most used headphone preset by the press of one button.

Hi Benoit! Thank you! Try this. Once you’ve assign your CL12 user defined key to “fav” and have created the custom headphone “fav” preset for coms you’ll want to then manually select the preset you want to toggle from then your user defined key will toggle. Let me know if this fixes it.

Two questions Why do you use X5 as output to the crew? And do you usually send the mix to the boom op and not only the boom signal?
@MichaelWynneCAS
5 жыл бұрын
Hi Linus, thanks for the question. X5/6 are the only AUX tracks that allow you to route the headphone outputs in the menu system which is the basis of how all crew members hear each other. And I typically send a production mix track to my boom op.
@LinusGidstedtSound
5 жыл бұрын
Interesting! Is it common to send the mix track to the boom op? When I’m booming I want to listen to just the boom. But I understand that it’s not possible if you also what to hear the comms
@MichaelWynneCAS
5 жыл бұрын
I’d say it’s common, but not a hard fast rule, sending a prefade boom with thIs com workflow is possible though, you’d have to engage it on the send is all, and the mixer could simply listen to the mix on the other side of the headphone channel, but the utility would have to hear the prefade boom though. But the newly released Lectro duet opens up the possibility of both.

Michael Wynne , probably the biggest thing I wish my Zoom F8n had: being able to route the headphone outputs like that. Is weird not hearing for instance a channel PFL or the record bell etc

It all comes down to signal flow routing, most mixers weren't this extensive early on so something that may be helpful is you may be able to use an additional mixer in the front end to pull this off.
