It would seem that many users have not read the directions carefully. You need to make sure that the steam valve on the right side of the machine is completely tight before you turn the power button on; also the selector on the front should be under coffee. What they did not do in the video is turn the selector to "steam" once the espresso is pulled to the FIRST line. This is when you should use the steam to froth your milk by slowly opening the steam valve with the steamer in your milk. Once your milk is frothed (or steamed) you should tighten the valve completely once again, and turn the selector back to "coffee." Now, you will see that the espresso will be pulled much faster due to the pressure built up during your steaming. The most important reason for this is to not let the water overheat while pulling the espresso, burning your grind in the process. So remember, fill to the FIRST line; Steam your milk; Put your milk down; Then finish pulling (dripping?) your espresso (Unless you enjoy the burnt taste after watching it drip for a few minutes)

@doctorofthefuture It's just a very different prep, heat, temp and duration wise than with a traditional pump driven espresso machine. This machine is very similar to what you have been drinking because it's steam driven, like your stovetop. I think this is going to be neck and neck with your stovetop, coffee flavor wise, but it's not a traditional espresso extraction. To change the flavor noticeably, you'd need to get a pump driven machine. For what this is, I think it's great. - Kat

Thanks for a good video! The helpful comment by someone to steam milk after mark 1, then back to coffee so no burnt grind was great. To one unhappy owner who commented his disappointment, I have a lot of Capresso products and "cheap" is not how I would describe any of them. They have lasted for years, have thoughtful engineering and replacement parts are reasonable and available for a long time with their amazing customer service staff (you can actually talk to a live person in new Jersey). Sometimes they even have parts not yet in inventory (like they just haven't checked them in yet) and the reps will be able to see that and grab that part for you as well. Shipping is fast and reasonable or free. I have this machine and love it, like all of the other products I have. And no, I don't work for them or have anything to gain with my compliment. My wife bought me this coffee maker as a surprise for father's day. From day one if you wanted your coffee hot you would have to hit up the milk in the microwave as the steamer would make foam but would not hit the milk. Anyway we improvised like that in order to get a hot cup of coffee however after only 2 months (yes past the 30 days where we would be able to return it) it does not work and weather the position manual is on coffee making or steaming for the milk steam would go out from the coffee rather than the milk tube (and yes we cleaned the tube and it’s not clogged). Very low quality product and I'm very happy I did not thorough away my old good Mr. Coffee espresso machine that cost me $25. This product is so cheap and of low quality that it doesn’t worth any money at all, yet we still pay it.

Espresso blend yes, espresso grind no. The mesh will clog with a fine grind, as the machine does not develop the 9 bar level needed to really force water through the puck. Use a somewhat fine drip grind for best results. As I can testify.

Joanne H Sorry your experience with the machine has not been good. The machine does not have a pump and it relies in steam pressure to push water through the ground. So most likely the issue with the espresso has to do with not enough pressure build up, or your grounds may have been too fine. As far as the steam wand, there could possibly a scale clog, or some milk residue clogging the tip. You could try using a safety pin or needle to try to dislodge any unseen build up from the plastic part of the panarello. - Steven

I want to add after putting the 4 oz. o water in and closing top lid and side frother knob I put 1 full measure of measurer which comes with Capresso. this makes enough for my 3oz cup of coffee I slide my leaver all the way to the left for 3 minutes and allow pressure to build then slide to middle where it's strongest. When it starts to run I fill to 3 oz mark then I slide to left to froth. Mine did the same thing in video but you need to adjust the rubber nozzle close to bend for correct position. pour coffee in favorite cup add milk as much as you like. Oh also I use approx. 1/3 c. milk to froth move pitcher up and down and around to get the froth you like. After adding milk add your favorite flavor. Caramel is good also. I like my latte like a dessert so I put 2 tsp. sugar in then if the coffee gets cold I still love to drink it. less milk is cappuccino Enjoy!

Hi Goce TheMacedonian, I don't think it would hurt the machine in anyway, but you may need to play around with the coffee dosage to see how much is needed to make a tasty one shot. According to Capresso's instructions (#9 on pg. 8), "when you have enough espresso in the glass carafe turn the power switch off...". It's really up to you when you feel you have enough espresso. However, it is important to note that you should always fill the boiler completely, even when you do not want a full pot. Here is a link to the instructions: www.capresso.com/pdf/inst_303.pdf. A espresso machine that builds up steam is no good because the temp is too high and burns the espresso grounds. Any good machine will use a pump or rotary system to force the water thru the grounds when the water reaches the proper temperature. Now espresso machines are measured in bars of preassure and 7 to 9 bars is all you need, you will see plenty of machines on the market that offer 15 bars of pressure and the I did try uses that as a reason to Jack the price up using the bigger is better mentality. When it comes to porta filters( meat you put the coffe grounds in) there are 2 types, pressurized and unpressurized. These cheap machines have a pressurized porta filter so grind consistency and accurate tammping are not as important, a good machine will have a unpressurized portafilter and ground consistency and tamping must be spot-on so I recommend you purchase a good Burr Mill for your coffee beans and you should use a burr mill even when making regular drip coffee because it makes a huge difference. When it comes to tampping 30lbs of force it what you should always use and you can get tamps that let you know exactly when you hit the 30lb mark. When you use a good machine and you pull a couple of hits of espresso it will have a beautiful rich brown color and when you use these cheap steam espresso machines the hits of espresso come out looking of used motor oil, plus they smell and taste burnt because they are thanks to the steam which is just to hot to pull a proper hit of espresso. I have been making espresso for a long time and my Battista skills are at max level. Also even Mr Coffee is now offering a espresso maker that uses the pump system so stay away from their cheaper ones and the 1 pictured in this video. Save your money up and get a real machine because the difference is amazing.

I am glad that I found Seattle Coffee Gear! Your reviews are very informative and fun to watch. I recently picked up a Mr. Coffee Espresso BVMC-ECM260 (Not Really) now I know Steam Espresso Machine. Not the Espresso that I was wanting but actually a very nice strong... not bitter and not burnt (i'm looking at you (-_-) SBUX)... flavorful cup of coffee. Reminds me of my french press brews but with a much more robust flavor. At first I was using the machine like it was a real pump espresso machine and actually trying to tamp the grounds, after watching this I got a near perfect pot of great coffee out of it. I see know why someone would actually buy a steam espresso machine over say a pump or other capsule coffee maker. It can make cafe ala frothed milk like no ones business.
