Lost Derbysire Part 1 - Crich Tramway & Tunnel - Clay Cross Company Railway
We are in the Amber Valley of Derbyshire for Part 1 of 4 of a mini series looking at the lost history in the area.
In the first part we are looking at George Stephenson's Clay Cross Company Railway, which ran from Crich to Ambergate - taking limestone from the quarries near the village of Crich to the limeworks way below. Opened in 1841 and closing in 1957.
We start in beautiful village of Crich at Cliffe Quarry. A magnificant viewpoint at the Crich Memorial overlooking the surrounding valleys. These days the top of the old railway is the Crich Tramway Village Museum - now a popular tourist attraction.
From here the tramway/railway is very much disused - bordering on missing. We can trace evidence of the old route through Crich via old bridges, embakments and tunnels. We can also see the old spur to Church Quarry, hidden away between the houses.
In Crich is the first tunnel - known locally as village tunnel. Now sealed, but one portal is still evident on private land.
As we leave the village, we cross Chadwick Nick Road, close to the old engine shed which is still standing, though in a poor state of repair. Following the line further, we come across our second tunnel. This was portals still visible, but accessiblity is a bit of a dubious term. Crawling through the narrow gap between the infill and the portal roof we can get inside. Mushroom, damp and rotten sleepers can be seen as well as the stunning brickwork.
From here, the route drops steeply down the hillside towards Ambergate Limeworks. This was the scene of the incline where wagons were lowered down via rope. Walking down the incline makes you realise how steep it is.

My channel was set up in 2020 mainly to feature my running adventures. I planned to film and showcase the days out and destinations my running travels took me. Mainly the Peak District and the sights and marvels of Sheffield and the surrounding regions.
However due to Covid restrictions, I found a new interest in researching and exploring old abandoned places - railway lines, canal, woodland, parks to name a few.
So the videos you'll find will be mainly be of those things. Of course, where possible I'll be running to my destination.
