On January 22nd 1988, double child murderer Colin Pitchfork was sentenced to life in prison for raping and strangling two 15-year-old girls, Lynda Mann and Dawn Ashworth, in Leicestershire in 1983 and 1986. And after a momentary release in 2021 was overturned as Pitchfork was understood to have approached young women on multiple occasions, he returned to prison. Until now. As Pitchfork has been granted parole and is set to be released, professor David Wilson looks into the verdict and untangles the harrowing story of the first person to be convicted of rape and murder using DNA profiling.
