US Navy Trident C4 ballistic missile Vet here. I got to serve on these boats. Going underway is never easy. Luckily we never got over extended on our deployments. Each sub has 2 full crews, a Blue and a Gold. So ya go out for 70ish days at a time, then come back and sit in an office till ya have to go out again. "Boomers", the missile subs, are the greatest deployment ever. If you could be on the same boat for 5 years you could plan Christmas 5 years down the road. And you get a huge tax credit for only being in the country 6 months out of the year.

The thing I love the most about this movie is that the plot and story are fairly generic but it’s the storytelling, filmmaking and acting that really elevate this movie into something worthwhile. Tony Scott was unimpressed with the script when he signed on to direct, but saw the potential in it so he gave it to the writers of the previous two films he’d just directed Quentin Tarantino and Shane Black (True Romance and The Last Boy Scout) to punch up. And if you’re familiar with their writing styles you can pretty easily identify which scenes each of them put their stamp on.

At the time, Capt Ramsey (Hackman) was absolutely correct in his actions. Full authority rested with the sub commander, and he controlled the launch decisions. That’s why they made the comment at the beginning about the three most powerful men in the world. Shortly after this film came out, the system was reworked to remove the captain’s control, placing the launch decision in the hands of the president directly. I had two friends who were involved in developing the security and cryptography systems to allow that change. Fascinating stuff, but incredibly complex. Layers of safeguards and countermeasures to ensure against unauthorized launches, as you’d hope.

19:25 -- RE: "It would be hot down there."; A: Depending on a lot of factors, it *might* manage to get hot but Fun Fact! submarines (starting in World War 2) were among the first ships of the U.S. Navy to have proper air conditioning plus freezer refrigeration on board, because the only thing keeping the air "Hot" is the inside cabin pressure and carbon dioxide. The outside water temperature tends to cool down everything inside the submarine over time, until finally the air starts to lose its moisture to condensation. So, to keep the ship properly dehumidified and thus pleasant air conditioning via heat exchange is used, and since this sucker is nuclear, there's lots of power for it. With all that being said, "Silent Running" is the mode of operation where a submarine turns off any and all equipment which would be noisy enough for another submarine to potentially hear it using hydrophones, also known as passive sonar. If rigged for silent running it is possible that the inside might get more uncomfortable but the air exchangers probably won't be as noisy as the high pressure steam being used for electrical generation.

19:05 -- RE: "The Driver"; AKA the Helmsman. Pretty much does "drive" using a combination of controls although he won't necessarily be in complete control of how fast the props are spinning. In other words, there's a bunch of people who are controlling power output through the nuclear plant to generate steam which is then used in combination with electric motors to provide thrust. Subs use rudders to turn left or right, as well as "dive planes" to pitch up and down, but could submerge by simply flooding ballast tanks until negatively buoyant. Positive Buoyancy = Floats and if submerged, surfaces. Sometimes you hear the Helm or officer in command explicitly order for "Up or Down" Bubble, that's what they're talking about, the relative buoyancy of the forward or aft ballast tanks.

What's great is that they are both right. You can pick any side and be right. Great movie.

You're correct about their situation, but,a mutiny on a US sub is a very big no-no. LOL. October-12-1972 -Forty six sailors were injured in a race riot involing 100 sailors aboard the USS KittyHawk.

This was movie was so well done, and the ending was key to removing anxiety from film goes (ie; beach vacations took a noticeable dip for the two years following the release of “Jaws”). I am also sure the military has a number of trained out contingencies (ie; President is incapacitated or dead), because to leave the fate of the world in the hands of one person, who’s nation has historically a 40% absentee rate in general elections, is about as solid as Rock,Paper, Scissors.

The Russian dictator who appears at the beginning of the film is played by Daniel Von Bargen, who also played Mr. Kruger in Seinfield

Hi Ames!! What a great reaction and edit! I think you'd make a totally fly missile sub driver. On the subject of the word "Greenwich" (for next time you encounter it, which you're going to), this is one of those words invented by the English, and they in their wisdom like to say it "Grennitch". 😆. As a fellow North American, i like finding better ways to say words, but this is one people might get ruffled about. Have a great rest of week, ✌🏼

More: Greenwich, England is the location of the worldwide time standard. When you tell a computer or device your time zone, things like GMT+3 mean Greenwich Mean Time plus 3 hours. Zulu is a military shorthand.

Crimson Tide (1995) - great contemporary action film. Das Boot (1981) - the gold standard for submarine films / suggest viewing with German audio and English subtitles. Run Silent, Run Deep (1958) - one of several classics worthy of a reaction. Operation Petticoat (1959) - one of the best comedies. As for the thought of surviving a nuclear war, I suggest a made for TV film: The Day After (1983)

Love this movie. I can't remember who it was but someone said this reminded them of a play where everything revolves around one set piece. Imagine the blocking for this movie. Lol

This was Denzel’s first movie with Tony Scott. They clearly liked working with each other as they went on to do LOTS of hit movies together. Their last film together was “Unstoppable” and although it’s lesser known, I think it would also make for a great reaction! “Deja Vu” is another lesser known one that’s also really good.

27:30 Submarines have four "major depths." The first is Test Depth, which is the maximum depth a submarine is allowed to operate during peacetime, and is called that because it is what is tested during sea trials before a sub is commissioned. The next is Operating Depth, which is the maximum allowable depth during wartime or battle. For modern US subs, that is often around 1,500 feet. The next is Design Depth, which is the maximum depth a submarine can go based on the engineering and design of the ship. The final, and worst, is Collapse Depth (aka Crush Depth), which is when the submarine's structure fails and the ship implodes due to water pressure. Modern US subs have an estimated crush depth of between 2,250 to 3,000 feet, depending on class. At the time of Crimson Tide, the USS Alabama had a crush depth of about 1,900 feet, which is why if they went any deeper than 1,850, the ship's structure could start failing and implode.

What I love about this movie is that neither man is particularly wrong about anything. It just depends on your viewpoint.
