My dream is to write music with lyrics so convoluted that it creates two camps of people: Those who think the lyrics are deep, and those who say they’re pretentious or nonsensical. The singer from Dillinger Escape Plan took a fat shit on stage (with an extreme close up on camera that was displayed on all the giant monitors) in front of 60,000 + people, smeared it on himself and threw it into the crowd at Reading. Even after doing so, they still managed to get a highly positive response from the audience by playing an excellent set. If that's not the motherfucking epitome of iconic, I don't know what is.

lol right? I feel like this point was completely missed. He was an amazing fkng artist and happened to do something eye-catching in a moment of inspiration. Not everyone needs to be a Hendrix fan but if you listen to the live album, he says he’s doing it as thank-you offering of sorts to the audience because he loved them and was just in the moment (and arguably on a hefty amount of acid)… not because he thought, “hmmm this would be iconic! This will make tomorrow’s news!”

"All duties are either duties of right, that is, juridical duties (officia juris), or duties of virtue, that is, ethical duties (officia virtutis s. ethica). Juridical duties are such as may be promulgated by external legislation; ethical duties are those for which such legislation is not possible. The reason why the latter cannot be properly made the subject of external legislation is because they relate to an end or final purpose, which is itself, at the same time, embraced in these duties, and which it is a duty for the individual to have as such. But no external legislation can cause any one to adopt a particular intention, or to propose to himself a certain purpose; for this depends upon an internal condition or act of the mind itself. However, external actions conducive to such a mental condition may be commanded, without its being implied that the individual will of necessity make them an end to himself. But why, then, it may be asked, is the science of morals, or moral philosophy, commonly entitled -- especially by Cicero -- the science of duty and not also the science of right, since duties and rights refer to each other? The reason is this. We know our own freedom -- from which all moral laws and consequently all rights as well as all duties arise -- only through the moral imperative, which is an immediate injunction of duty; whereas the conception of right as a ground of putting others under obligation has afterwards to be developed out of it." - Jaden Smith

Imagine being Jaden Smith. Your dad is a genuine rags-to-riches living story, a man that is genuinely loved and respected, and every living day is proof that there is hope to break it big, to be an idol and to even inspire a few people to keep going. A success story! This dad decided to spawn a few children, and one of these struck puberty, starting to struggle with his own ego. He's gotta live up to it. He's gotta live up to the name of his dad. But how? His dad accomplished something. What can he accomplish? What can he prove? What sort of cultural mark can he leave on this world? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. He's really not very talented - he doesn't need to work to attain talent, because he's rich. But he still needs to FEEL like he matters. So he surrounds himself with self-obsessed art hipsters and producers and simply insists that he's got something to say. I like Will Smith. I think he's a likeable dude and he seems like a truly nice guy. But got damn, I feel for his kids. And for all rich kids with parents like this. Simply knowing that your dad accomplished something you neither can or have to do must suck. What would I do? Start living on the streets, become a vagrant? A guru? Do a Bruce Wayne-style voyage around the world and swear off money and fame? I don't know.

The trap alot of rappers fall into is the same trap movies fall into. The rule they forget is "show, not tell" Instead of saying how great and artistic or maniacal you are, you have to show it through words. They ignore this rule and it makes rappers sound expository.

Kids who grew up in money and never knew nothing but money are usually like this, disconnected from reality. It’s the result of a padded life, and it’s nothing new because it happened in rock. Some rich person’s kids want the edginess and coolness associated with something that was made through the poor and working class and hop into it with this ideal of savior. I’m sorry but being black myself, and growing up working class, Will Smith’s kids hopping into a culture and acting as if they’re the saviors with all the money backing them, is just as bad as some white kid like Jake Paul appropriating the culture. There’s a reason why you don’t see anyone but suburban kids, blogs, and magazines raving about this dude and listening to his music. Shit’s average at best, but being Will Smith’s kid goes a long way into buying yourself some cred with and having access to whatever rapper to hop on your track to make your shit seem more authentic.

Dont generalize people who grew up with money. I am black grew up working class as well, but I have met plenty of rich kids who aren't pretentious assholes like Jaden, and some of them rap. Childish Gambino grew up rich and has rapped about it in songs, and he isnt like Jaden Smith either. For some reason Jaden has this idea that he is some sort of New Wave Kanye/Odd Future hybrid: just edgy and different enough to make him stand out from his generation's pack of awful ass trap "rappers", but also possessing a "vision" that transcends the average hip hop fan's mental capacity, one that we can never hope to understand, and no, he doesn't realize that that is because he isn't actually that deep or really anything special.

Not every instance is always true. Sure it sucks there might be an amazing musician no one will hear because he is on the poorest part of new England with no internet. But that doesn't mean there can't be talented middle class or poor Americans too. Being American itself gives an advantage and you disregard any PRIVILEGE you have beside you are "black" and "poor."

So many “artists” want so desperately to be considered an innovator and iconic artist that they attribute being hated to being controversial with being such way. As there tends to be a correlation between being controversial and being hated by many, this is considered a fast track to being iconic. These “artists” just want to be considered innovators without having to actually innovate, without the key prerequisite to being an innovator which is talent. This just leads to an untalented music maker that everyone hates.

Clorox eyedrops could you please complete your high school education clorox? I know things have been really hard since you failed the ged the first four times you took it, but I believe in you! Now, this does mean that you'll have to read books with more than 12 words on a page with NO pictures, but it'll all be worth it, seeing as you'll finally be about to detect obvious sarcasm by the end of it.

I'm responding to people who excuse Jaden for being a self-obsessed twat by saying he's 19

Jamie Moncrieff Ah. I probably should have payed more attention. The people saying he's just a kid are really obnoxious.
