A sensational dance scene. One of the very best. The film editing in this sequence is spectacular -- the way you get that Yvonne is aware that Burt is there, even though afterwards she pretends to just be noticing; the thematic link: she's with one man but thinking of another; his smoldering look; the intensity between the two of them while everyone else is having such a good time; the way she starts dancing cautiously but then really starts to spin. And the music matched to the moment -- portentous, perfecto.

Great scene! And Iker Spozio beat me to the keypad on the presence of legendary flautist Esy Morales. The acclaimed flautist and brother of popular rumba bandleader Noro Morales, Esy would sadly pass away less than a year after this film at the age of 33. Another tidbit: the pianist in this scene is the another popular bandleader of the day: Rene Touzet. He composed numerous Latin classics such as "Mi Musica Es Para Ti" and "No Te Importe Saber, recorded as "Let Me Love You Tonight" by Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby et. al.. Touzet's opening riff for the 1956 recording "El Loco Cha Cha" is acknowledged as the basis of the Kingsmen's r&b classic "Louie, Louie", just one of many examples of the impact of mid-century mambo and cha cha cha on mainstream pop.

Metro Mambo, I just listened to "El loco cha cha" and yes, U R right. Sounds like the Kingsmen "borrowed" that intro for the basis of their hit "Louie Louie", although it's a pretty basic theme for beginning musicians to bang out. Loved the flautist; he really shines in this movie.

Mr Morales🎼🎶 must have had juvenile diabetes which went undetected for years since he was also eventually blind from it. No one with his slim build at that young age has type 2, especially in the 40s and 50s.

Thank you so much for this info! I stumbled across this video looking for something else and it completely enveloped me. Haven’t been able to get it out of my head. Do you know the name of this tune by chance? It’s incredible. I…must…stream… Haha thank you!

@@switchposition It's flautist Esy Morales' signature 'hit', "Jungle Fantasy". It was quite popular in the late '40's, and was recorded by a number of mambo and Latin-jazz artists into the 1960's.

A key detail: Watch the woman behind Lancaster. She's just enjoying the music and a night out, while Lancaster is being torn up inside. If only he'd loosen up and get on with his life, he could be like her. But it's not his nature. Someone standing next to you can be going through hell while you're just enjoying life.

Without a doubt, Burt Lancaster in this film is the most incredibly good looking & sexy man I have ever seen. My jaw would drop at seeing him, and if he looked my way, I would probably scatter like a rabbit. Too intimidating- especially when you learn of his brilliant intellect, acting talent & creativity at ensuring several so important films were made. Huge civil rights supporter. Really, the perfect man.

Burt Lancaster is pitch perfect. He portrays his character as if his completely under the spell of De Carlo. He is looking at her but he is dreaming. Every little sleepwalking step he takes bringing him closer to his demise.

Lancaster and Curtis would later star in an even greater film noir, "Sweet Smell of Success" from '57. Curtis had apparently just walked onto the studio and director Siodmak asked him if he could dance. The rest is history. The film is interesting but uneven. This particular scene stands out for the terrific editing and the gorgeous Yvonne De Carlo's cool dancing.

I’m just reading about this dance scene in TC’s biography. He lied he could dance but blagged it well enough, although watching this he didn’t have to break any taxing moves. The role could’ve been anyone. It did tho get him one fan letter asking who the gorgeous man dancing with YdC was and it made Universal think twice about him.

I loved watching this old noir movie, with a young beautiful Yvonne it it, I was glued to the screen, but this movie has the absolute worst ending ever ! I mean really, the rest of the script was great, but I sat there with my mouth open when I saw THE END pop up ! I think they could have came up with some thing better than THAT !

Robert Siodmak really had a way with music. His movie PHANTOM LADY has a "jazz sequence" that's even more intense than this one. You'll wonder how they got it past the censors.

Come poteva sapere cosa era successo?, quindi stupenda e stupenda per me come valutazione è 8.

So I was doing a bit of research looking for film noir quotes and stumbled across this clip (of many). I can’t get it out of my head; it’s incredible. I’ve only begun to research the song and musicians, but I can’t find the name of this tune anywhere. From Metro Mambo’s comment is see the flautist is Esy Morales, pianist is Tene Touzet, so I’m starting there and finding a treasure trove, but this song is out of control. Can anyone help me out with the name? Thank you!

Such wonderful music, such talent, love the flute! Would have preferred better shots of Tony Curtis with Yvonne than those long shots of Burt L. So glad this is preserved on You Tube-- thank you, Mr Cinefilia, for putting this up!!
