Hi Brad Many thanks for watching .It is like solving a maze. There are many paths by which the rabbit can reach the carrot but not necessarily only one path is the longest. Please read detailed literature on critical path from Google to understand the concept better.

Hello Ray, thank you for explaining CPM in such a great detail! I really liked all the tips and find them very useful. I have question though - how come next activity starts on the same day as the previous one? For example, if Activity A ends on day 5, then shouldn't Activity B start on day 6 instead of day 5? Would greatly appreciate your help! Thanks

Glad it was helpful Maria! Thanks for watching. Regarding your doubt, that's the numbering convention for a CPM problem calculation process. Logically as well, in projects, it ofter happens that end of a task & beginning of next task happening on the same day.

Hi Ray. The demos shown by Andrew Ramdayal & Joseph Philips on the topic of CPM differ from your explaination in 3 significant ways . As shown in their videos 1. The start of the first activity (let's say A) is from DAY-1 2. In forward pass , Ls=Es+Duration-1. (activity starts on Day 1 , it takes 5 days to complete so Ef =5. ) 3. In forward pass during a convergence maximum day out of all the options is picked and 1 is added to it. So in your video example, For activity F , Es should be 8 . For Backward pass minimum number is chosen and 1 is subtracted from it. Requesting you to pls clarify, which method is flawlessly correct. I got my calculations wrong on your Udemy mock test as i have been using the aforementioned logic...

Ray, first of all, I love you videos. You have a way of making it easier to understand then I learn in class. Second, and my question is about Critical path and float explanations. In your example, ES is 0 and PMBOK 6th edition has ES as 1 on page 211. Also, the add 1 to the EF for the succeeding ES in forward pass and minus 1 for LS from LF backwards pass. Just wondering which is correct for taking an exam in fall of 2020
@PMPwithRay
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, thanks for your query, You see....in pg 211, even if the early start is 1, the EF is 5. Hence, it does not matter, since as per PMBOK 1+5 is also 5 (not 6). For me, it is better to start from zero, since 0+5 = 5 is more logical :) Hope this helps!

Hey Ray, for the very last question when the scenario says to increase the duration of activity D and E, redoing the network is really time-consuming. for this situation, I consider activity D's duration increases by 3 days, and activity E's duration increases by 1 day. both of these activities are not on a critical path (per our previous calculation). so what happens if the duration of D& E increase. 1. activity D will eat up a 1-day float and will add the remaining 2 days to its completion date. therefore it completes on day 7th instead of 5. 2. activity E with eat up its 1-day float and its completion date will be day 16th instead of 14th ( its start date moves to 7 due to activity D) 3. moving along with the forward path, we end up 39 days for project completion. this is not what you calculated. could you tell me where I am wrong?
@PMPwithRay
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Morteza, I suggest you don't take short-cuts in CPM questions. Redo the full network with the new constraints...it will not be time consuming if you have practiced drawing network diagrams well. That will be my guidance.

thank you for your effort and making it easy for us. i have already started recommending your channel to my peers. i have a query about the extension question. it is mentioned that D extends to 8 months. does it mean 8 is added in the initial months or we consider it as a new duration? what is the pro tip for extension questions like these?

Hi Mahrukh, when it says activity D extends 'TO' 8 months, then it means the final duration now is 8 months. If it was added by 8 months extra on top, it would be D extends 'BY' 8 months more...etc etc
