I honestly think using the 'eavy metal style for all box arts is really doing especially new painters a disservice. GW is basically suggesting to them "look, this is how it's supposed to be painted", but while the box art is definitely very clean and shows off the sculpts well, I think it's, frankly, also quite boring in many ways - especially if you're not at the level of their professional painters (which pretty much no new painter ever is), trying to emulate it is just not going to lead to good results, while even basic volumetric shading would look a lot better.

do you use a size #2 8404 for most painting of miniatures? I own a 0, 1 and 2 that I bought a while back, and having a nice brush makes a lot of difference. I'd only had synthetic, citadel brushes prior to this. I honestly did not think it would make that much difference. Now I feel like I had been wasting my time for years, when really having a nice brush would in fact make me a better painter :D I fancy getting those dry brushes from artis opus next I think. seen some awesome stuff done with a stippling technique. Ofc if you have an air brush you can get the same thing a lot faster, but I like the look of the stippled weathering a lot.

@@trovarion thanks for info. when I was a lot younger, I used to think thin brushes were the best, as obviously, small brush, better detail :D ofc I couldn't have been more wrong, as it's all about the rock hard point, and the wide body. I use a 1 mostly as well, although I do find myself switching to the zero a lot, when I am worried about being messy. I tend to do most work with the 1, then switch to the zero for more detailed work. I have only used raph's, so I can't talk for other brands. They're amazing though. I could immediately get the thinnest lines for doing cross hatch on cloaks and stuff. I'm alright at fine detail, but I'm now getting more into your style of painting, with volumetric shading and pinstriping in details instead of washes and what have you (ofc this takes way longer, but I want to learn) I actually have a background in graffiti as well, so I learned all I know about light and shadow from this. I think as I already have some knowledge of shadow and using highlights, that I can transfer it to mini painting. For me now it's actually just a case of learning techniques. I will continue to watch your videos, and pick things up. Maybe I will get good enough to where I can join your mentor program as well. This would be awesome. thanks.

@@trovarion BTW mate, do you have any other videos on the light effect you did with the fluo orange in the necron video, please? I have ordered a fluo blue, to see if this works nice for my admech (for plasma and optics) would I just want to have fluo at the very centre of the light source? I have not tried the glow effect (is this OSL?) but as far as I understand, this is glazed in? I will have a go on my admech anyway. they are only going to have red and blue as saturated colours (actually green as a sort of spot colour, as this is used on some wired and also the flasks on characters, but it will also be on the necron ruins of my bases, to add some contrast) using fluo paints for glowing effects seems like a great technique anyway. I may use some of the green as well, will have to see though as I don't want too many bright colours competing.

@Nice Brain It's the difference between _knowing_ that fact and _feeling_ it. We aren't really mentally wired for anonymity in that way. Having a piece critiqued in front of your peers can be extremely uncomfortable, like you've been stripped naked and everyone is poking and examining your every inch. While the artists in this case do have the separation of the Internet to insulate them somewhat, our ape brains can only conceptualize that intellectually; it still _feels_ like you're being hauled in front of the class to be peeled and scrutinized like a dissected frog.

I think it's kind of funny how much your helpful suggestions sound like the advice I heard in the aquarell class I took. 1) Never use the pur colours you bought. Always mix. 2) Shadows and highlights are a different colour than your base. 3) look out for your focus point. What's your composition? 4) where does the light come from and what does it touch. I like that minis and pictures are from a working perspective so similar. I think beginner's could learn also a lot from looking at other art. Some big portraits in oil for example. I know, I picked up a lot from going to a museum. Even Bob Ross thought me a thing or two. Thanks for the video. I think, I will try something with clothe next. You sparked some ideas in my brain. 😊

I really liked the feddback on the first miniatures. Because those tips will help a lot of people a ton. You gave some nice feedback on painting TT-minis in general that I need to keep in mind. I'am mainly focused in larger scale miniatures and busts and therefore still strugle with painting smaller miniatures. Bigger miniatures are imho easier to paint. So kudos to everyone who paints those little bastards. Woohoo ... that was long. Thanks for the love. I would add some more critque to my miniature (milb0r's Zombie Detective). Besides from the obvious lack of detail within the hat (I just couldn't paint on on it. I wasted hours on textures that I toned down later to a state where they aren't readable anymore). I noticed that the highlight-intensity on the upper lip is kinda turned upsidedown. I wanted the eyes to stand out and by the main-focus. I pre-sketched a way harsher shadow around the eyes, cast by the hat, but lost this harschness throughout the painting process ... not sure if this is a good or bad thing. Cheers!

12:30 What is “natural” doesn’t always translate well into a fantasy setting. The irony of you saying that Tiamat, the literal Chromatic Dragon God, had too many chromatic colors was extremely hilarious. Can’t wait for somebody to send in Bahamut, the Metallic Dragon God. 😂 13:07 That is Tiamat. Notice the solid chromatic color usage on each head with little to no shared common color on the underside? That is because the lore calls for each of the chromatic dragon species to be represented by their god, Tiamat. I get that you’re critique is geared toward standard art practices, but as a D&D nerd/slash first time miniature painter, I respect your expertise, but it misses the mark regarding lore. Just providing you context. As a concession, I also wouldn’t say that an artist needs to stick strictly with the lore either. I would say that like colors, there’s a spectrum of possibilities to consider that stretches from original intent of the character (again, a fantastical creature that may not adhere to “Natural” rules for art) to standard art practices that conform to how we have learned to process visual information. Now, from a purely scientific standpoint, color is completely subjective. I mean that it actually does not exist. It is a psychological representation of patterns of electrochemical reactions as translated by the prefrontal cortex. Light, the vibrations in the electromagnetic field, exist. Our understanding of it, known as color, does not. That said, contrasting colors are dramatic for a reason. It creates a stress due to discord in the visual cortex. It is the same as notes that are out of key. The brain has expectations that put it at ease when met, and creates tension when not. Even in literature, people have expectations that need to be subverted to create tension making the story engaging and the ending harmonious in its conclusion. In Nature, contrast is used to create create tension. A creature puffing up is commanding more of the visual field to cause tension. A foul odor is sprayed to create tension. A loud roar or high pitch screech creates tension. These actions are generally related to fear and anger meant to scare off threats or invoke intense fear to shut down prey. This is an important point regarding Tiamat because Chromatic Dragons ARE Evil-Aligned. Tiamat painted to cause tension and invoke discomfort and/or dread in a sentient creature (as opposed to a simple animal) would be well within valid consideration for using “unnatural” coloring methods. In short, the method used has an emotional component to consider for the audience. Bahumat, the counterpoint to Tiamat, is a single headed platinum dragon. The five main metallic dragons are Brass, Copper, Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Metallic Dragons are Good-Aligned, so more calming effects would be more valid. So more “natural” painting methods would be more applicable. 48:00 Bravo!!! I’m glad I came back for the rest of the video. That is a spot on comment. Standardization leads to imitation and stagnation. To me REAL art is creation. Even when Hedy Lamar combined wireless communications with player piano technology, THAT was art. Humans were meant to take was “is” and rearrange it into all the possible what “could be”s. I was thinking you sounded to stringent in your critiques, but I appreciated the knowledge. Your comment here places you at master level in my eyes…which, being a complete novice, doesn’t account for much. 😂 Cheers 🍻

A little bit off topic, but I could really use an experts advice here. I’ve recently started the hobby again having a lot of time lately, COVID/19 etc. And I have loads of nice old paints, that I like to restore, but I seems like the community isn’t entirely in agreement, whether you can restore an acrylic paint or not. What is your opinion, and how would you go restoring the old paints? furthermore which paint containers, does preserves the paint the best, in your experience?
