This is one of my favorite stitch patterns to use for baby blankets. I haven’t made one in awhile, so I don’t remember how I did the top edge. This tutorial is great! I have a couple Caron Big Cakes in my stash, but haven’t used any yet. I don’t think they are “baby” colors, though. It really doesn’t matter, does it? 🙂 Anything goes these days. I have 3 active baby blankets going right now (using all stash). Maybe when 2 are done, I’ll pull out my cakes and try that yarn! Robin, the enabler. 😝 Seriously, thanks! You’re helping me make choices for my yarn stash. 🤗

It's a great "classic" stitch pattern isn't it? I don't use it nearly as much as I should! With regards to colours, this is the most "baby colours" blanket I think I've ever made 😂 I am working on 2 blankets for friends that are heavily pregnant (one due on the 30th so I'd better get a move on with that one haha!) BUT both the blankets I'm making are grey / blacks. They couldn't be further from traditional baby colours if they tried! The more bold the better I think 😀 I personally prefer non-traditional colours for blankets 🥰

Oh no Robin. I found you a couple of weeks ago and I just plucked up the courage to try this and went out to get the wool. Here in Australia I can find every 'cake' but for big cakes. I found Baby Cakes, Cotton Cakes, just plain old Cakes, Latte Cakes, Skinny Cakes and Tea Cakes..... but no Big Cakes!!!!! I cant believe it. I love love love this blanket and your way of teaching. Im new to crochet but I can knit, so I think I might be able to manage this. Do you know, by any chance, if any of these other wools will do. Is there something I can look for on the belly band to help me substitute it for one of the others. I very nearly picked up the Latte Cakes because it was soooo soft, but then its got stringy bits on. Im a new subscriber and Im loving everything you do. You've inspired me no end and I really really appreciate it. Hugs xxx
@HookedbyRobin
4 жыл бұрын
It should work with any yarn! (Definitely avoid that fuzzy stringy yarn, that will be a nightmare for you if you are not confident) Just be aware, when the yarn is finer, it will work up smaller so you may want to do a swatch first to gauge how it looks :-) Generally, if you are first starting out (and especially if you are a knitter first) go for slightly thicker yarns and they will force you to be a little more relaxed with your stitches - all knitters I've taught in the past like to tighten stitches up for neatness which can be a nightmare to work back into 😃

Yes hard to get the Caron Big cakes here in Australia, I decided to try using the Baby cakes instead, so far so good although the yarn doesn't feel especially soft for baby.

Love to watch, listen to you crocheting! This Carion Big Cake is beautiful! My favorite colors. I think I will try this pattern to make a twin-sized blanket for my 11 years old granddaughter. She will love the Lacey shells, as well as the colors. Just a side note: I crocheted two dozen face mask adapters for my daughter and her nurse colleagues on the oncology unit of the Philadelphia Children’s Hospital. I’m told they loved them and I should continue!!! It was a small project, but very much appreciated.

Another fun stitch to try. When making a border, I have always had trouble deciding exactly where to put my stitches on the sides of my project, so I just pretty much guessed making sure both sides had the same number of stitches. I see now that there can be an actual pattern for the placement of these worrisome stitches. I need to check some more of your patterns to see if I can pick up any handy hints for figuring out how to go about deciding how to devise that pattern for any blanket I am working on.

Lovely pattern :) I have started this with a hook 4,5 and and a simple acrylic yarn...I am now just at the beginning, 2nd time of row 3, and I notice that the pattern looks noce but it looks round and not square at the bottom. I am a beginner :) so I am not sure if that is because my first chain was too tight or this will be fixes at the end when we do the edges and the shape. The hook is the right size to this specific yarn...thanks for the help :)

Hi Robin, I am almost finished with this blanket - but I made it larger. The border is killing me, LOL - on the sides, but hopefully it will work out. I did it in Red Heart Super Saver Ombre, color Anemone which looked more red on my screen but it is actually a deep burgundy, dusty rose dusty pink, etc.. I looked for Jordan Almonds in every store I shop in and I think it's only sold on your side of the Atlantic. The pattern was easy but the yarn made the side border difficult. I worked with this yarn a few years ago, making a Hudson Bay BIanket in the Tunisian stitch (because I ruined the real one we had) and it was soft, where this yarn is not at all. I love all your patterns and am looking at doing a mini bean somewhere in my next project. Thank you for all your videos. I wish I could make all your projects. Phyllis

I didn't colour control no! It does change colour mid row at some points but I think the colourway itself and the staggering of the shells disguises it really well :-) I'm a fan of just a few row repeats as there is nothing worse than constantly having to refer to a pattern when you just want to sit and crochet infront of the TV! 😂 I need easy to remember repeats haha!
